those weekly "build your own r/c wateva" magazenes are at it again [:P]

remember how we all went mad for the nitro monster truck tyres, LOL

well this time they have gone a step further up the radio control scale - build your own radio control spitfire! [:0]

if you see the advert, the plane looks massive, no doubt the costs will be massive aswell!

my uncle used to be into flying r/c planes, but he moved onto helecopters. i remember him saying how the low wing planes like a model spitfire were really hard to fly, even for experienced people.

plus radio control aircraft are seriously dangerous bits of kit, maybe the mags have gone a step to far [?]

just found it on the net: http://www.deagostini.co.uk/spitfire/

I think this has bad news written all over it. At least with an R/C car, even nitro the worst injury I would expect is a broken ankle. A nitro plane could do around 80mph and land on someone's head. Not good.

They tried to get the backing of the BMFA (British Model Flying Association) for this magazine, but the BMFA wouldn't touch it and quite rightly so. A model plane in the hands of a beginner is a dangerous piece of kit. I expect there'll be some backlash over this at some point...

It's a sad fact that these things are pushed to beginners. Like the model shops where 10 year old lad asks which is the best car, model shop sells Mum and Dad a Savage or Revo or whatever, 3kg of 40mph+ nitro truck that is dangerous in beginners hands.

What I would like to see is a £1.99 a week mag that built up an electric slow park flyer plane, far better suited to the intended audience.

Sometimes these mags are okay; my lad did the robot one the other year, and though it cost us a lot in the long run, a few quid a week gave him a good project to do in easy to digest stages and taught him a fair bit too.

But for a magazine to do a large spitfire is just madness; I would like to learn to fly planes but there's no way I would want to try one of those to learn flying technique.

i seen that in the window of a shop the other day. this is goin to be more expensive than the cars becasue of the price of field eqiupment and a 4-channel radio set. The best bit though is when they release the issue in which you have to cover the plane with pro-film or mono-kote. i am dreading the moment when the kids start coming in with half built planes looking for parts that have missed and telling me about the magazine as if i am cut off from the rest of the world, well atleast thats what happened with the car ones so far.

Next up "build your own nitro helicopter", learn to build your own nitro helicopter and go nowhere with it other than wasting your money. week by week you give us all your money and to get a page with no useful infomation whatsoever on it other than different ways you can give us your money and a few small parts which uild up your collection of nothing. i can just picture the t.v. ad right now

scary. i dunno if i'll ever be able to walk across a park again without the fear being attacked by a eight year old with his nitro spitfire! arrgh! im being serious!

I saw the advert on television tonight and my first reaction was one of horror!!

When I was younger I built a aeroplane from a set of plans which RCM&E it was hard to build I did a good job of it.

I took it to RAF Cranwell(A mile down the road) got it running tuned the engine let it go took off great flew about 200 yards away then as I turned it flipped over and before I could do anything it smashed into the ground at about 80 mph!!

Luckily there was No-one about PLUS as a RAFMAA(Royal Air Force Model Aircraft Association) I had 3rd party insurance so IF i had caused any damage at least I would of had insurance!!

My horror was in thinking that inexperienced people will buy this part-work build the Spitfire and TRY to fly it(badword it's a Low wing, these ARE the most difficult to fly) and these people are going to cause so much damage!!

Personally I just can't believe how stupid De Agostini are being in releasing this!!

God help the first person who causes a death with this kit!![:0]

Well if you are going to start flying air planes, shouldn't you put it together first? Then you will learn what goes on and how it works. Nobody can just jump into flying and be a pro so beginners have to start somewhere. Not everyone who starts the build will complete it so I wouldn't worry about it. If you are scared, just go around with a helment on your head from now on. Saftey first.

i think if they could have atleast made a high winged plane rather than a low winger and have made it electric. They are just throwing people into the deep end of the pool the way they are doing it

If you build it though you could get it wrong. It looks to be of wood construction so there is a high ***-up factor which would further scupper the chances of you keeping it in the air!

Whats the difference between buying all the magazines to make this plane and buying a complete plan from Tower Hobbies. If your inexperienced flyer, it doesn't matter where it came from. You can't bag on De Agostini for filling a niche in a market
