Can somebody help me out on what the differences are between a regular ta02 and a ta02w? I always thought it was just a ta02 with wider tires. I was looking for ta02 universals and it looks like 02w versions have different axles than regular 02's. Do they have wider front axles too? Do they have different front knuckles, because the bearing config looks different(no wide ring on the axle like regular 02). If so, it looks like I can use the 02w universal as ta02 rear uni. Thanks for reading

From what I can work out, the difference between the TA02 and TA02W is only in the front steering hubs..

The TA02 uses the blue steering hubs as fitted to the FF01, CC/XC chassis like the Toureg etc..

The TA02W uses the red steering hubs as originally fitted to the Hotshot. These Hubs use 2 x 1150 bearings, and the same uni drive shafts as in the rear of the TA02 (and all 4 wheels on the TL01)..

Cheers

The front wheel shaft is the same with the back one, however, the 02's front dogbone is longer. You'll be looking at the 02's 45mm front dogbone instead of the 01's 39mm dogbone -which the 02 also use in the back.

Additionally, 3mm offset front wheels and 6mm offset rear wheels are used to bring it to 200mm.

The 02's rear dogbone is the same as the 01's rear dogbone, 39mm.

So, if you're looking for a universal driveshaft for the front end of 02W, the 42mm uni shaft will do.

The 02 front arms are longer than the 01, thus the reason behind the longer dogbone.

I believe the Taisan Porsche is the only car to use the "wide" chassis, and that it is "short" as well. It is designated the TA02SW. I don't have one to play with, but having a quick look at the manual I reckon it is really a TA0 1 1/2. It has TA01 rear suspension, and TA02 front arms with TA01 knuckles(uprights), it uses the TA02 tub. The 01 rear arms make the wheelbase short, and the front arm/upright set make the front wide. As IrenL says - the rest of the width is made up by offset in the wheels.

You can see some more info on the differences between the TA01 and 02 here:

Sorry, my bad... IrenL is correct..

The correct part for the front Uni's for the TA02W is 53225..

The correct part No. for the rear of (any) TA02 is 53115.. According to the Tamiya Guide book, you can also also use the 53418 TL01 Uni set for the rear of the TA02, and also the TB01 and FF02.. (this is where I got confused, I fitted a 53115 to a TB01)..

The other TA02W are the, 58144 Nissan 300ZX, the 58165 Nismo Clarion GT-R LM.. and 58179 Toyota Toms Supra..

^ Correct.

The front had TA-01 hubs and axles, but the arms and driveshafts are normal 02. This gave the front approx 10 extra width. The rear was made up with the deep offset 2 piece rims, measuring 32mm wide. Hard to find worth while tyres for, these days.

This can be got around by using the TG-10 long axles and the long hex's found on the TL-01 Toe in rear upright set. They will equalise the track with the front, and let you use tyres that work (i.e. any normal 24-26mm rim.).

This mod makes your car 193 +/- 2mm, depending on your offset.

Either that, or get yourself some of these new HPI works rims, 3mm offset for the front, 9mm for the rear. That'd be phat

Very true indeed. However, I have a set of wide super grip radial (op.231) that's sitting idle in its' box. Was going to use it, but seeing how wide rims with up to date styling are basically non-existent nowadays... I might let it go.. 1000 yen back in 1995...

i've got a TA02, TA02SW and a TA02W. the TA02W has the long TA02 front arms that originally appeared in the skyline long front arm set which was an upgrade for the TA01. but the TA02W had the TA01 style red uprights which when combined with the TA02 style arms gives increased track. the TA02W front uni's are different to all other touring car shafts. the rear just uses wider wheels as mentioned above.

TA02SW as in the taisan porsche, had NORMAL TA02 front end. only difference was the flipped TA01 rear arms which shortened the wheelbase. wide rear track was attained by using same wide rear wheel as TA02W.
