This is just a guess from observation, but I don't think they really caught on outside of Japan. You see them all the time on Yahoo auctions Japan, but not on other auction sites (ebay).

I always thought they were a great idea.

Maybe some one can confirm?

Pros:

- One medium size unit that housed both receiver and ESC

- Available in several amp ratings (80A, 100A & 160A continuous)

- Included reverse

- Included standard S-148 or S3003 servo

Cons:

- Odd size that can typically only fit Tamiya vehicles that were designed for them

- Expensive

- Only offered in 27mhz (international hobby frequency)

- 160A is not good enough to run modern mod motors

- Non proportional reverse (one speed only)

- Unprovoked application of brakes when coasting (on 160A version)

I personally love them, but they are not very practical for runners. The p-160f could easily handle a 13T mod in my Dyna Storm on an off-road track. Of course it melted the Tamiya connectors together, but I never had thermaling problem. The main problem I have with it is the brakes. I can't stand that it will randomly apply the brakes when I let off the throttle to coast. I've checked with others that have similar problems. Futaba always had problems with the brakes on their older ESCs...

i have a nice crp from a tt01 xb, infact i was given the whole car and the crp with the tamiya servo free. i have never used it but i am sure it works, i remember a while back seeing them for sale at 80 each, now when you consider a new mtronics rv11 is about 30 and a reciever is 15 thats adds up to 45 half the price of a crp and would peform much better than a crp. I am not sure if you can still buy them but i definatly think they wont catch on and will just be another forgotten rc thing, abit like the stupid wheel adaptors on the monster beetle (not sure about other cars) almost all new cars use hex adaptors infact probably all new cars use them.

Tamiya have always made them (or rather Futaba have always made them for Tamiya :) ) and they are still available in some of the early XB kits, although since they released the TEU101BK they tend to use that in the XBs instead. Only recently have Tamiya stopped selling them, as pointed out above there's no reason to keep selling them when the much cheaper ESC is available.

CPR units have been around since 1988 and have only recently been discontinued, so I suppose they had caught on :P

And the Monster Beetle wheel adaptors were the standard used on every Tamiya buggy at the time, it originated with the SRBs and was known as a good reliable fitting, the hex drive was an oddball fitment which we didn't see until the Kyosho Optima and Ultima and they weren't the most reliable. Running Kyosho cars at the time meant having to buy new adaptors to run any other wheels. The standard hex drive only became popular around 1992 with the release of narrow touring cars, all buggies have always had their own specific fitment. Strangely enough apart from Tamiya and Kyosho these days all 4wd buggies use the smaller Losi hex on the front and every buggy uses the Associated cross pin rear drive. Even the 501X and Durga use these industry standard fitments. ;)
