Just Ordered a Lunch Box :-0 now how do i paint it the classic yellow?

The tamiya paints are recalled and some suggest Halfords. Does anyone have a good bright banana yellow (not too green looking) reference to tamiyas colour. Also i read about priming the shell do i need to prime it i was just going to give it about 4 thin coats and put the decals on, if its good to prime what do i use.

Any other paint tips welcome.

Im going to bash it so it will get scratched anyway jut want it to last and be strong.

definitely prime it otherwise the paint will pull away from the door and hood lines

OK, what do i prime it with and what paint type should i be using for the prime and the main coat, oh and how many layers?

Is it best to give it a fine wet sand before and after the prime?

Tamiya fine primer is the way to go. If you are painting it yellow, prime it white. Should take 3 layers of primer to get good coverage. Lay down thin layers and let dry between, don't try to cover everything first go. You want to spray just enough to get good coverage, to avoid 'filling in' fine body details like shut lines with paint.

Yes, it's a good idea to 'flat' the primer before you start spraying colour, and to sand the plastic shell lightly to 'key' the surface so the primer sticks a bit better. Sand and fill any mould lines or imperfections in the shell. Preparation is key - the better the preparation job, the better the results will be.

Stick with Tamiya paints. And for a super-deep finish, use TS-13 clear coat over the top.

I like Tamiya Chrome Yellow, anyone done a Lunchy in this colour?

Excellent suggestion but currently Tamiya paint is not available in the UK due to a recall. If you plan to use halfords paint, then buy a primer that is compatible with the paint you will use. Ask the paint shop keeper, they'll know best

******, that's no good. Come down to Australia, we have plenty! :D

What was in the paint that made them recall it? Wondering if we'll get the 'new' TS paint in Australia? Hope they don't nerf it, Tamiya paint in the rattle cans is great.

get halfords own white primer. and then paint it ford signal yellow. that is a bright yellow that doesnt fade. dont forget to clear coat after applying the decals

Nothing, the labels didn't have the correct warnings on them for the EU, as it needs a different set of warnings to other regions.

I hear some suggest not to clear coat over decals as the decals can expand and contract with heat over time and flake/crake the clear coat :-s

metalic yellow/orange sounds good

i painted my lunchbox with halfords primer and then with vauxhall silver green and applied laquer after the decals had been put on and haven't had any problems at all and i've give it some real abuse. still looks good as well :D

I used the Tamiya brush-on (as far as I know, it's only the rattle cans that have been taken off sale) primer on my Bear Hawk, which has the same kind of white plastic shell, and it worked a charm. In fact, with the three coats of lacquer and stickers on now, you couldn't even tell that all of it was brushed on...much better finish than I could ever get with a spray can!

Hi Vince,

Try Humbrol rattle cans. You can clear coat over decals, but you'd need to leave the decals for 24 hours to let them shrink first, and then put thin coats over the whole shell, which will also protect your paint. Do quite a few coats as thin coats will need a good build up to get a good thick coating for both the paint and the clear coat.

See you tomorrow night,

Ian

Thanks for the tip, i didn't clear coat, maybe i should have but thought its going to get battered anyway and it saved me 6, maybe on another shell later on.

Done :-p
