Boomerang Gearing?

What sort of gearing are people using on their runner boomerangs?. I'm using a Tamiya super stock RZ motor and (possibly) a 16 tooth pinion gear (i cant remember the pinion gear without taking it back out) and even if i use a mechancal speed control or an ESC one, the motor gets so hot i get smoke coming from it!!!!! My garden isn't huge - it's more suited to a micro or my crawler.......... Has anyone got a better idea for replacing that plastic pin thats holds the battery tray in place aswell?.
