I race an M-03 mini at my local club and have been playing around with different types of motor. Does anyone know the difference between these two motors and which one is the faster of the two -

They are -

1. Tamiya sport tuned motor.

2. Tamiya lightly tuned motor.

The motor i'm using at the moment is 23 turn tamiya TZ motor. It's a quick car but it's eating tyres with that motor.........

Cheers,

James.

IMO.. I would use the Sports tuned motor.

It will have less torque than the Lightly tuned motor, (so less wheelspin, less tyre wear) and also should rev harder for higher top speed.

i can't keep tires on mine with a silver can, but i've heard a lot of folks say that anything past a sport tuned is just wasted in wheelspin. sounds about right to me.

Selection of tyres, suspension settings, gearing, surface and track size (or play area), all play a part in determining the point at which your motor no-longer provides any useful benefit and just causes the wheels to spin, but more importantly realising that the throttle is NOT a two position switch!

It is also essential that you glue your Mini tyres on. The lads I meet up with all have Minis now running with between a cheap Ansmann 15 Turn and a 23 Turn Tamiya RZ. I did run one with a Sport Tuned in the other weekend but it was just left standing.

Motor revs is not the only factor....but yes, you'll not fail to eat tyres on a Mini whatever motor you have in it!

Sport Tuned is a 23 turn, Lightly tuned is 27 turn I believe.

I run a Sport Tuned in the Bear Hawk and a Super Stock BZ in the Manta Ray, and the Sport tuned is not far behind, and gives much better run times.

I've been racing the mini for about two months now, and have found that fitting front and rear stabalizer bars improves the handling dramatically. Because i'm the only one running a mini at my club, i race against the touring cars, so i need a reasonable turn of speed to come anywhere close to challenging them. I too ran mine with a sport tuned motor, and although it was very drivable it was blasted away. But your quite right, it isn't all about speed. I like to think i have my car set up near perfect now - handling wise, and on short twisty tracks it gives the tourers a run for their money. The hardest part is getting the power down to come out of the corners without all that manic wheel spinning. I also run spektrum radio gear, which is another bonus because i can adjust the throttle and power output on the ESC. I guess i'm looking for a fast motor, but one with more torque rather than a screamer. Decent lap times and good results come from consistency rather than corner corner to corner bursts. It's a great car to race though!.

Some Sport tuned motors are both 23T and 27T if I am thinking correctly.. The Sport Tuned is a slight (SLIGHT) upgrade from the Silver Can, go with that. Or stick a Trinity CO27 27T and rip them tires up :o

Ah yes, i've heard about that there may be two types of sport tuned motor - is it something to do with the coloured finish on the can? - mines got a dull matt finish to it. I've actually fitted it back in now because i noticed during friday nights racing that when i ran that motor the other week, i obviously forgot to adjust the throttle settings on the ESC and increase the power - Doh!!!!!!!! Where i've been running the 23 turn motor i've got some of the settings turned down a bit. I've cranked everything back up to max again and suprisingly enough, that motor sounds quick now.........what a plonker..........

roll on friday night.................
