I saw on TimeTunnel, on the FAQ page, that you can convert a TL-01 to an offroader by putting bigger wheels and jacking-up the body. Is this possible on a TT01 and is it safe? Will I knacker my suspension if I do that?

Please get back to me ASAP,

Sam

i have a tlo1 chassis i fit 2.2 imex claw dawgs i use on occasion dont have a tto1 tho. i dont think there is much difference in the way the sus. is set up. .find you some of those. or your best bet would be maybe to source you some hummer wheels and tires or one of the stadium trucks ie. f150 or s-10

mad-bull....one of the members, ChrisB, i think, did some modifications to a TL01 to get it rally worthy.

i bet he might post when he sees this thread as there were seveal steps involved.

Yeah I modded my TL-01 to give it a bit more clearance and fitted rally blocks for grip. See my showroom for the gory details.

Not seen a TT-01 in the flesh myself, so don't know if the same sort of mods can be used. IIRC its a tub chassis, which is a good start for keeping the **** out.

As long as the suspension arms have decent travel and are hinged towards the centre of the car its got potential. The main issue will be adjusting the camber of the wheels if you go for increased suspension height. The TL-01 had adjustable upper suspension arms available as a hopup, so you would probably need some thing similar for the TT-01.

Also the cheapy steering knuckles on the TL-01 had to be replaced with proper turnbuckles to allow for the increase in ride height - the same would probably be needed on the TT-01.

With hindsight you might be better starting with a TB-01. Still a few kits using this arounf (Lancer VII for example) and you get oil filled shocks out of the box. I have a TB-01 Lancer VI NIB which I will build soon and will mod to increase the ride height.

I think this will be a better rally chassis than my modded TL-01.

PM me if you have any general questions, although I don't have any specific experience with the TT-01.

Also check out some of the threads started by thesuper on his rally modded TA-03F - lots of useful pics and info in those.

Cheers,

Chris

Oh, seems complicated :(

On the TTunnel site, it says that on a TL01, you just "add larger 'monster truck' wheels and away you go"....

Seems different to this!!

Its as much or as little as you want to do I guess.

Sure you can just add bigger wheels, but then bear in mind none of the TL-01 shells will probably fit without major modifications, and you will probably lose any "scale" looks the original kit may have had.

If neither of these bother you then go for it!

Thanks Chris..

If I was to jack up the body as much a poss, then get some wheels (any recommendations for cheap ones??) and stick them on, it should all work.. here's hoping!!

I would keep it with sand and gravel than though, water and mud wouldn't do the electronics any good, the chassis isn't made for that too...

Jacking up the body won't help much as the arches still will be too narrow and front wheels need also to steer [;)] Also the TL01 with MT tires will be overgeared and the uprights and suspensions parts won't last long with higher torques acting on them.

The TL01 won't simply take MT wheels at all. The rear wheels will rub against the motor unless you use extremely offset wheels which then put more strain on the already weak suspension. I tried this with a TL01 chassis and the lower suspension mounts onto the chassis snapped within minutes of use off road.

I suspect that you have misread the information about the TL01 - there was also several off road buggies based on the TL01 chassis but they used much longer suspension arms and driveshafts to allow the larger wheels/tyres to clear the motor and also to allow clearance for steering. Have a look for Baja Champ in the model listing and you'll see the difference. Even so the Baja Champ was still really little more than a loose dirt car. It certainly was not designed for serious off road use as it still didn't have much clearance. It depends on what type of terrain you wish to drive but anything like banks, large gravel, mud and water really requires a monster truck or mad bull type vehicle where the larger tyres give decent groud clearance.

If it simply that you wish to drive over close cut grass, small gravel or loose dirt then the Baja Champ is a good option, as it uses most of the TL01 chassis parts it is cheap to get replacement parts for. There are also loads of hop-ups available for the TL01.

On TimeTunnel, if you go to "Tamiya Parts" then there's a small link which says "RC help and advice" Click this, and then find the article about HOW TO CHANGE A TAMIYA TL01 FOCUS INTO A MONSTER TRUCK

This is where I saw it :(

Hi Sam,

That article is very misleading, the stadium raider does NOT use MONSTER TRUCK (MT) size tyres. It uses much smaller diameter tyres which are actually no bigger than most 1/10 buggy tyres. The stadium raider wheels have enough offset to clear the suspension and motor.

Buggy tyres are normally about 75-80mm diameter, MT tyres are normally 115-125mm diameter. Most people now even refer to Clod/Jugg/TXT as monster trucks and the old blackfoots etc are relegated to just normal trucks! Clod tyres are 160mm+ diameter.

As Theo said above, even with the small diameter stadium raider wheels this still won't really work because the bodyshell will need lots of trimming to allow the tyres to fit under full suspension movement. You could of course simply buy a stadium raider which has the truck shell already designed to fit over those tyres or buy a baja champ which is an open fender buggy with the same size tyres. I'd personally recommend the Baja Champ rather than the stadium raider because the champ has a wider track and will be more stable at speed off road.

I don't believe larger tyres will fit the TT01 at all. I had a TB01 up until last year which has a virtually identical chassis layout to the TT01 and the bathtub chassis comes close to the front wheels when running stock touring car size. I doubt you would be able to steer at all if you fitted the XC sized Stadium raider wheels/tyres.

Hope this helps, Ian.

You can run those tyres

BUT

You will have to run TT01 enzo hexes (long ones) and wide offset wheels, like the ones fitted to my project Unimog... either those or there are some 5 spoke pattern wheels (enkei rally style) available from the UK distributer Perkins and available from LHS. Plus you will have to do some minor grinding/cutting to the chassis.

Good article - enough piccies to get the gist of it without having to put it through a translator.

Are those the same guys that do the excellent M-03 Mini rally modding and racing?

Only thing I would say with the TT-01 in the pictures there is it does not look to have anywhere like the clearance my rally modded TL-01 has - I would have thought they could have gone with longer shocks personally to increase the ground clearance without affecting the handling too much.

Really like those lexan mudguards - think I might do something similar with some of my cars to prevent the crud from going everywhere inside the shell.

Cheers,

Chris
