Hi guys, I am not sure I have this right. Do you only need a receiver with a BEC if you are running a manual speed controller? I'm not really sure what else you would need the function for? I notice that receivers without the BEC feature are literally half the size, but does that mean you require a separate 4AA battery pack in the car to operate it? I'm confused (doesn't tale much!)

Thanks

Lack of BEC in the reciever means you need to use a seperate power supply to power the reciever. 4 or 5 x 'AA's or a regulator inline from the 7.2v stick pack. (5x Ni-Cd/Ni-MH = 6.0v)

Most ESCs are set to use with a reciever that has a BEC, it gets it's power from the +ve and -ve of the reciever plug, the 3rd wire is signal. Some ESCs still have a seperate power cable for the reciever power (red/black - 2 wires aswell as the 3pin plug that has signal/+ve/-ve). Tamiya 101 ESC is like this.

Cheers, Mark

Thanks. Hmm so basically unless you want to greayy old style you would always make sure you have a eceiver with a BEC then, i'm suprised you can even but receivers without now to be honest?

Nitro vehicles use 2 servos, steering and throttle/brakes. This type of setup needs the 4 or 5x AA's or a nice hump pack to power the reciever and servos. No need for BEC here.

I use some very cheap micro 4ch receivers designed for aircraft in some of my applications, they have no BEC but they operate fine on the power from the ESC - I've never blown one.

Mostly I use this in my RDX race car, for various reasons:

1) tiny receiver doesn't get in the way of the restrictive chassis

2) almost no weight to the receiver

3) very cheap to replace when they get smashed (this happens often the way I race!)

nah the other way around

most ESCs have BEC inbuilt, they supply 6.0V to the RX via the 1 cable and you don't need BEC in the RX

exception being the TEU101BK

SO hold on, do I need to use a BEC receiver with a TEU101BK, or are you saying you I can use a receiver without BEC with this speed controller? :(

OK yet other ESCs you can have a smaller receiver without the BEC?

Most other esc's have the BEC built into them, so they send the correct voltage to the receiver.

Size isn't really an issue now days. I have a couple of receivers that are very small, but still have BEC.

BEC esc sends 6 volts to the receiver.

Non BEC sends 7.2.

7.2 will damage a receiver that doesn't have BEC.

In addition to previous answers it is worth saying that either the ESC or the receiver must have BEC.

Most often, nowadays, both have BEC, but that is not necessary.

The TEU-101BK is one of the few ESCs on the market today that does not have BEC.

In terms of cost though, would you say it's still an excellent buy?
