I have decided my next kit has to be a Monster Truck, I wanted peoples opinion one which is the best one to buy, I dont want a RTR one, it has to be one I can assemble, if the e savage could be built from NIB I would snap it up, just dont like these RTR run, it spoils it for me and Im sure if the old vintage were RTR in the 80s the hobby just wouldnt be what it is today.

Any advice would be appreciated as there are a few to choose from, thanks for your time.

TXT-1. Had a ball building mine. I don't run it though, so no idea what its like!

The Blackfoot Extreme is a Wild Dagger/Twin Detonator minus the front gearbox. I thought about getting one, but it just looks silly with the wheelbase being an inch longer than the wheel arches. I really wish Tamiya had either stretched the shell (by making it an extended-cab) or shortened the chassis so it actually fit the body right.

The older King/Super Blackfoots are great trucks, but being out of production makes them maybe not such a great choice for a basher. You'll have to go on a scavenger hunt every time something breaks.

Actually, I'd suggest a Super Clod Buster. I had an original Clod Buster for a long time, and I regret getting rid of it. You can do anything with it. In stock form, it's pure classic Tamiya bouncy plastic joy, but a 4-link suspension and a better steering linkage wakes it up and makes it almost unstoppable. And from there, the sky's the limit. You can actually build an entire Clod Buster with no Tamiya parts in it, if you really want to spend the money.

Actually, I have no interest in the TXT-1 or the Juggernaut at all, but I wouldn't consider my life complete if I never get me a blonde broad and a 1987 Clod Buster or a Bull Head!

Sorry. I have to re-read your original post. You meant E-Savage. HPI sell it as sport version only. Still assembled.

Anyways, markbt73 gave good advice. Most especially about the availability of parts if you go with king blackfoot. While having a blackfoot extreme is kinda wierd being 2wd. Tamiya just took out the front gearbox to make it different from the dagger 4wd chassis. If you just want something to play around, go for clod. It is has real monster truck appearance. If you want a truggy type, go with dagger.

Monster Truck should be 4wd.

I had a Wild Dagger but sold it, I didn't like the way it drove... It was too slow, bad suspension, and I had to glue the tires (never understood why people did that until then :D), etc... But it was all because of me! I should have just spent a few more dollars into the car and replaced those Bushings, that Msc, those FRICTION SHOCKS and put some Sports tuned black cans in there...

I now regret I sold it, because it was in fact an indestructible car... What stock car can you drive up a ramp, let it fall down on whatever side from 1.5 metres height and break nothing? The Dagger could (until one day I broke one mount of the diff to the main chassis). If I would buy a Monster truck, I'd go for a Clodbuster because of it's 4 wheel steering, amazing looks and size) or again a Wild Dagger based chassis. If I would chose anything outside tamiya, I wouldn't exactly know what to choose, but I heard nice things about an EP Traxxas monster truck.

I think the Wild Dagger series trucks are great (Modern one being the Dual Hunter, as mentioned above).

I have had a number of these, and have 3 at the moment. Watch for a build tips/basic improvement thread I'll be putting up here soon... Including a e-TV bit!.

If you want to spend a little more, I also am madly in lurv with my TXT 1. It's a great hulking lump, but it's my fav of all time, I think.

Angel,

You will have fun with whatever monster truck you go for. I have a King Blackfoot & a Super Clodbuster & they are easily my favourite runners. The King Blackfoot is faster & as some of the others have said can be difficult to get parts for if something breaks. They are however very tough trucks & I have not actually broke anything on mine. The Clodbuster is a true Tamiya classic & the hop up list for them is endless. Almost anyone who is interested in Tamiya has owned a Clodbuster at some time.

The problem with the Clod/Bullhead and Dagger IMO is that both need a fair bit of money spent before they become really fun. I had a stock Bullhead and while it wasn't too slow, it was like driving a forklift on stilts. The standard steering setup is a joke giving you a tiny amount of front wheel steering and loads at the back while the twin motors mean that you spend quite a bit making it faster (a problem shared with the Dagger). You can do a lot with a Dagger, but again you spend plenty of money and end up with something that goes like a Traxxas Emaxx but a little smaller. If you just want some good, old fashion big wheeled fun I would look at a Midnight Pumpkin or Lunchbox. They're not as large as the Clod or Dagger, have only one motor and are very unstable but are much more fun. The fact they wheelie all the time means handling isn't something to worry about so even a slightly faster motor (I run 19turns) makes it a huge giggle.

Hey angel,

I'd highly recommend the TXT-1. It's an excellent kit to build, and loads of fun to drive. It is the only "proper" monster truck kit you can buy - as it's got solid axles and a central transmission just like the real thing. It looks and handles just like a real monster truck! :D

Out of the box it's crying out for proper motors, it really needs 14.4 volt power and 550 motors to get it moving. With a setup like that, it will keep up with most other tamiya monster trucks - but also do the same speeds over any terrain. The big wheels and torquey transmission make it almost unstoppable.

Out of all the monster trucks I've got it's my favorite to run

The clod buster is a classic, very durable and has endless amounts of hop up parts available for it to make it into a crawler, a racer or a cool show truck.

The king blackfoot is fun, but not that exciting. 2 wheel drive means it's no off roader, it's best driven on flat dusty surfaces where you can do power slides and donuts.

Twin detonator/wild dagger/double blaze/ duel hunter are all basically 4 wheel drive black foot extremes. They handle well and are tough, but are small and a little basic compared to other 1/10 scale monster trucks.

I love my blackfoot quick and fun and my Lunchbox does not like corners and bounces every where but its a blast to drive, but now i want something bigger and better so going for a Clod  It comes down to what you want to do with it to be honest, a play thing or get really stuck in and add as many hop ups as you can and go mad?

Play thing - Blackfoot or Lunchbox

Go mad - Clod

It depends entirely on what you want from a monster truck.

Fun stunt trucks like the Lunchbox and Pumpkin are loved by their owners, just don't expect much steering accuracy or great handling, just lots of indestructible bashing fun.

The TXT-1 is a nice truck, but as it's big and heavy requires more power to get it to go anywhere fast.

The Clodbuster is ideal if you want something big, but it bounces along on it's pogo stick shocks with limited suspension travel and the terrible kit steering setup makes the Lunchbox seem controllable. Of course you can then upgrade it to whatever you want and it then really comes into its own. Here's my 2.2 and super class crawlers, they'll just about manage walking pace for speed but will climb up anything. Stick a pair of race motors in (and a suitably big enough ESC) and they can fly along, once you fit some oil filled shocks on it to keep it near the ground.

The LandCruiser FJ40 is a great scale looking truck that looks great and is a reasonably capable crawler as stock.

Twin Detonator/Wild Dagger/Double Blaze/ Dual Hunter are great bashers, 4WD thanks to twin motors means they go over a lot of surfaces a buggy can't but they aren't big go anywhere monsters. Great stunt trucks though and they bash and jump very well.

Blackfoot Extreme has all the good/bad points of the TD/WD/DB/DH chassis but being 2WD means it's not as capable off road as the others. It does mean it's cheaper to buy and to upgrade in the future, and you can always fit the extra gearbox in there to make it 4WD at a later date.

Any monster truck will seem slow in comparison to your DF-03 buggy, but they have a lot of presence. The Wild Dagger/Dual Hunter won't be that different or capable than what you have got. I'd suggest something completely different with lots of ground clearance. You've had some troubles building your buggy (you've posted nearly 400 posts in 3 weeks!); the SuperClod is a slightly simpler build than the TXT-1, and there are lots of hop-ups available, and a lot of advice online. Both are very robust. Remember to buy a ball bearing set before the build. A basic kit can be added to as your own off road needs do, i.e. speed, articulation or crawling. But you don't need to go too mad with a budget to start with, they are all really good fun straight out of the box/build. <_<

the wild dagger/twin detonator/dual hunters are really a kick to run and super easy to build. they really need an esc and bearings from the get go, otherwise they just, well, you know, inhale greatly. the shocks are the next upgrade and then some sport tuned motors...

if you want to actually build one the way you want it, and don't mind investing in some upgrades right away, they are really great trucks and very solid. in plain vanilla kit form, hmmm... well, i don't know, because i didn't leave mine that way for long because it made me nuts! <_<

Lunchbox!! Dead cheap, dead easy to build (will feel like it only takes about 10mins to build after your DI), and loooaaadds of fun! you won't regret it. :D
