Scorcher, Rough Rider, Ranger, Champ Front End

Hi Guy's

As well as my Super Champ project, I'm also building a Sand Scorcher, but unfortunately the front suspension is wrecked!! I could do with a full front end, complete with shocks. A shell is also needed, but I'm not too worried if this is for the Scorcher, Blitzer, etc, as this buggy is for thrashing!!!!! This SRB I affectionately call Super Rough Buggy!

Hi mate

sorry dont have a spare front end but why not repair your one? stick a pic of it on and ill let you know if it can be repaired. the original shocks arnt really what you want for bashing, not sure what else fits but i had some massive truck ones that fitted straight on and made the suspension amazing. ended up putting the originals back on when i restored it.

Cheers Dazaa,

One of the tubes that the axles for the front arms run through is quite bent, and the 4 axles for the arms look like nails that have been used a thousand times!! I also need the right hand arms, ball races, and 1 front axle. I've got my eye on some front shocks that have had the coil over conversion done. I might go this route with the rear as well, as the torsion bars seem too stiff to me. The problem with the front shocks I have is the brass part that the shock piston runs through is horrendously worn, and the pistons wobble about in them!

I haven't sussed how to post pictures yet, I'll have to ask the Mrs!!

Regards,

Richard

I'd suggest you wait for it to appear on ebay or in the TC traderoom.

You can also make the front arms out of several plastic nylon-like materials like cutting boards (look in this topic where I made my own lower arms). You need a fairly thick cutting board for it, and the usual fitting with a small hex screw simply doesn't work. I'm working on this, although someone suggested hex screws with pins, which would go through the axles for the arms. In the end I think the plastic arms would be a bit more flexible (although there is not too much flex in the arms) and way stronger.

In this way you'll bend the axles earlier though. You might be able to make new axles out of wheel axles with a c ring clamped in a groove (so it's a bit like a thick rod from a damper).

The tubes could probably be made out of any tube with the right diameter and thickness. I think you could even make the shock towers yourself out of a cutting board (would require some skill and good tools though). Old ball races can be re-used with polymorph (there is a showroom entry about it).

In the end, as you see, making it all by yourself may be a lot of work, but if you have one or several broken/missing parts it's a good solution to fix your SRB, temporarily or as final parts.

Hi

By "nails" do you mean the little grub screws that hold the arms on to the little things that stick out? if so and even if not DO NOT reuse the old grub screws, and when removing them use a nice quality allen key as the soft ones will never get the screw out just ruin the head so it is jammed forever, i have loads of grub screws but they are much longer than the originals so they stick out alot, not sure they would work on a basher but im sure you can get grub screws of evilbay. coilovers look nice but i havnt got/had any so i cant say how they handle, try asking on the vintage discussion board. the tube the axel runs through? not sure what you mean there but if it is the thingy the wheel slides on and the nut screws on to im pretty sure re re frog ones are the same but im not entirly sure. ball bearings arnt hard to get, infact they are very easy to get no need to look for ones listed for srb just aslong they are the right size, not entirly sure right now but ill find out for you later. yep my shocks have the same problem the brass bit is worn out and the shocks leak oil, thats why i didnt bother putting oil in when i rebuilt it. the right hand arms what is wrong with them? if they are bent im not sure they can be fixed but they arnt to expensive to replace. to put pictures on just download the pictures from your camera to your computer. then make a photobucket(or any other photohosting thingy) account and add the pictures to photobucket, then just copy the link under the pictures you wish to add and paste them on your post hopefully somone will come and edit them so they apear without clicking on the link.
