Besides RC what are your hobbies?

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering what some of you do for fun besides spend countless hours buying, building, collecting and driving/crashing your tamiyas.

I do Tai Chi, and I'm an avid reader of medieval and legal history, and vampyre novels :P plus archery and shooting when i have time; mostly traditional bows and military rifles with a bit of tactical pistol shooting. It used to be kenpo karate, restoring & driving british cars in a car club, and running off-road cars like dune buggies and 4x4s. Also snow boarding, sky diving and rock climbing, but I'm too poor and busy for most of that now, so I switched hobbies.

I've seen at least one guy who ralleye races, and read a few posts about restoring vintage cars & motorcycles and such. So, what else do you do?

Started practising Shotokan Karate earlier this year and am an avid motorcyclist - these two and R/C occupy most of my time...

Oh yeah and I have a wife :P

For sheer geekiness, I collect video games (handhelds, consoles, arcade machines, pinball, etc), but to redress the balance a bit, I do some snowboarding too...

I like building and modding PC's and collecting vintage consoles and PC's. I also have quite an RC model airforce.

lets see: collect die caste at 1:43 scale

was into airsoft, but no place to shoot it and didn't feel like running around in battle gear carry a 10lbs machine gun in 34C degree heat. (not sure you would consider a Hobby, I did have several airsoflt machinde guns hand guns all in excellent condition but I ended giving them all to my nephew)

play golf whenever I can, but have to work on some Sat. and the club I belong to takes 2 hour by ferry to get to and summer is coming so playing will be slim.( more of a sport or game?)

work out 3 - 4 times a week BUT stop doing it since Dec, got to get back to it. (more of physical activity than hobby?)

I would like to try my hand in RC helicopter, not the twim blade 2 channel type but 4 -6 channels one with a rear rotor. I can just picture bring it to the club and buzz the golfers. :D

Ok, I play guitar poorly, keys about the same and sing somewhat worse. I used to compete in club level rally, circuit and hillclimbs, but that got too expensive. I do photography and to a small degree that entwines with spook chasing. I also do a bit of cartooning, but not professionally.

As well as RC cars, I have quite a few Slotcars (81 in total, got another 3 today). Up until recently I was quite into model trains, but have recently sold off a lot of my stuff, with more going on ebay soon. Still got a layout going round 2 walls of my room, but hope to rip it up and replace with a slot-track. I also sort-of collect diecast cars.

You guys play(ed) airsoft? I do too :D! Care to share what kind of gun you use(d) or what kind of games you play(ed) (CQB, woodland, etc)? I myself use a JG Steyr AUG with a UHC Colt Python as a sidearm. I play woodland.

RC is quite a recent addiction for me and is my "third" hobby, after writing and music.

I spend most of my time writing science fiction and horror. Mostly I try to write novels, I currently have two novels that I'd like to get published sometime - last year I was very focussed on getting both novels published, but some personal issues forced me to put them to one side to focus more on other things. Now I'm having fun writing a few short stories before I get back into the novels.

My full-length novels are mainstream science fiction with horror elements, handling a variety of issues that I believe are current today (e.g. genetic modification, dehumanisation) and various things that will become important in the future; they're usually set in future-scapes, but I try to keep a grounding on reality and avoid from getting into techno-babble (no Jump Gates or Warp Drives in my stories, lol)

My short stories are more, er, "alternative." I usually write them to make a point. They're very emotional, intense and usually dark, and hidden amongst the darkness is usually a personal message that is important to me, even if most of my readers never have a clue what it's really about. I like to think of it as "Thinking Man*'s Alternative Literature."

*I use the term "man" meaning the genus and not the gender, as most of my readers are female ;)

This year I've taken on several filmscript projects too, one of which I am keeping mostly under wraps, but will be very exciting for Tamiyaclub once the script is written and shooting is underway ;)

I also write music in a variety of styles. My main outlet is an epic techno act called "Variant" which can be heard on my website, www.foxholemusic.co.uk

Last year I also started another act called "Istanza" which is making some more personal points. I have a demo track on myspace but will not link it here as the song handles adult themes - PM me if you want to listen :)

I'm also getting involved in some other musical projects with friends, although we'll probably keep the results quiet until we've got something useful to show for it :D

I also ride a Honda VTR1000F Firestorm, although I don't have any motorcycling mates any more, so it's more of a mode of transport than a hobby now. Kinda tempted to sell the bike and save the insurance money to be honest :o

I was planning to buy a Mk2 VW Golf GTI in May, but the one I had arranged to buy has been withdrawn from sale, and I'm not sure if I can be bothered with the hassle of finding another good one.

I had the guns several years ago so my memory is a bit rusty....is the M4A1? with up graded springs, is the smaller version of the M16 and I added a gernade launcher, looks cool but heavy; the other the the MP5? (one you can hide under your over coat) with scope, silenser and dual magazine added, is nasty close combat piece of killing machine. The side arms were all WA (Western Arm) one was Competition were the slide does not go all the way back for competition shooting, but you can remove a latch and you get the full kick back, the other was a 45 colt full metal and powerful.

I used to shoot them in my balcony but you get those white BB all over the place so I shot a few time in the woods but realize all those BB may not be good for the environment. I ended up given them all to my nephew, I guess I must be his favour uncle.

Now, I am looking at the airsoflt again and thinking about it again :)

If you are into airsoft and happen to be in Hong Kong, bring money the selections here will floor you. There are so many hop ups you can add that a standard HK$1100.00 gun could run you over HK$10,000.00, so Tamiya RC are cheap!

Is funny is almost impossible to buy real gun here, but the fake ones are so real is unbelievible, while in the States you can buy any real gun, but the fake ones you have to add a red cap at the barrel to tell everyone is a fake :)

that red cap might save your life, but only if you are really lucky. these guns should be yellow or something because people around here would kill you in a heartbeat if they see such a realistic looking weapon pointing at them or someone else. that red cap isn't that noticeable. i would not be able to tell the difference between a real glock 9mm and the airsoft version, so anybody who points one at me is not going to like my response. :o

Only stupid people use their aisoft guns in public like that. Airsoft games are played on private sections of forest or other real estate. Keeping the gun itself under wraps during transport to and from games is also recommended (though I imagine people look twice when they see a dude in full camoflauge wearing a tactical vest, elbow and kneepads, combat boots, and holster!).

BTW Tamiya 1/10, you had a nice collection of guns; I want to add a grenade launcher to my AUG myself. Did you ever skirmish with them?

I thought we already did the "other hobbies" thread, but anyway, here goes:

I write fiction, currently working on a novel, and I also have a book of short stories I'm going to try to get published one of these days. I also have a blog of old memoirs and essays called Breakfast in Davenport.

I'm a pretty fair rhythm guitar player. I've played in two cover bands before, and a couple friends of mine and I were trying to get something going before I left Los Angeles, but it never worked out.

Also on the musical front, my wife has got me singing karaoke now, too. I'm not as nuts about it as she is, but I did win an "Impersonator Night" contest back in L.A. doing Elvis Costello. ;)

I used to restore/modify old guitars as well, but it's too expensive. So now I mess around with cheap guitars. My current project is a Squier '51. Rewired with a 3-position toggle switch and a new bridge pickup from Guitar Fetish, as seen here.

My next project on the musical instrument front will be building my own Class A tube amp from a kit.

I'm also learning how to cook, and trying to learn something about wine.

And one day, I want to restore an old truck, either a 1950s era pickup or a Scout/Jeepster/Bronco.

People here in Hong Kong has carrying cases/gun bags to transport their airsoft around and I would say people here would not turn around, run and hide if they see someone openly carrying an airsolt, maybe the police will have something to say, cause they know 99.99% of the people don't / can't own any real gun so we don't have this fear.

Most arm robberies commited here were carried out by X Chinese soldiers and they don't have any western weapons only old communist weapons.

The grenade launcher will add a nice touch but if you skirmish you may want to think about the extra weight, unless you are fit, running around with 2 -4 kg? extra.

I never brought he clothing, boots, helmet, face mask...so I never played any war games. The guns I had were more of a shelve queen and just handling them and looking at them were good enough for me. If I do get back into airsoft, I will need to get in shape and try the wall game, but the heat and humidity here will be a big turn off.

I'm not so worried about the weight (I'm pretty in shape, if I pass the acedemic course, I'll be a lifeguard in few weeks). I'm more worried about the launcher interfering with the way I should the gun and aim. The AUG's vertical grip makes it very manueverable and easy to aim, but it would have to be removed if the launcher is added.

I recalled in my high school days where one of my friends was a life guard and a runner, he was fit so the launcher is not an issue at all.

I am not very familiar with your AUG, you may want to check with several shops that sell AUG and see if the launcher will effect your aim and decide if you still want the launcher added. I recalled the launcher I had shoots 5 bb's at once, more like a shot gun.

I am not much into combat but more for looks so you may have to do some research to see if you will be happy with a launcher.

Just talking to you now, I want to get back into airsoft, but will likely be wall art than war games.

If you can and don't mind, I sure like to see your collection. ;)

If you can and don't mind, I sure like to see your collection. ;)

Well, my primary is a stock JG AUG (review here: http://www.airsoftretreat.com/reviews/show...hp?product=167). I don't plan to do major internal mods to it because it's generally considered that the more you modify the gearbox, the less reliable they become. I'll definitely be adding an optic in the near future, though, probably a 4x32. I use just use the iron sights right now. Father down the road, the barrel and hop up bucking will be upgraded.

My secondary is a UHC Colt Python 357 revolver with a 4 inch barrel http://www.amazon.com/UHC-inch-revolver-Bl...t/dp/B000G053HO. I wear this in a hip holster. Most other players use gas handguns, but I don't go that route because there would be tow things to run out of instead of one: gas and ammo. With spring guns, all you have to worry about is the ammo. Although I love the uniqueness of my revolver, it does pose a disadvantage because the people with autos have around 15 shots, I only have six!

I also carry a third gun, but it's just a $8 piece of garbage for the second holster that came on my vest. It creaks when being cocking and rattles when fired. http://www.wholesalecentral.com/globeprodu...26catid%3D73863

I also have another, cheaper AUG, with a plastice gearbox instead of metal, made by a company named Both Elephant (BE). The hop up broke on that gun so I combined it with a cheap plastic Cyma G36C I had lying around to create this (pics in the first post): http://www.airsoftretreat.com/forums/index.php?topic=45030.0

That gun's more of a wall hanger, however. It needs a completely new set of internals.

I wish I could show you my full battle loadout, but I don't have a pic of it.

Hi Z, thanks for the hook up info. What do you know, my other nephew, he is not into gun, has an AUG and I just looking at it on Monday and couldn't figure out how to access the battery compartment. The AUG is heavier than its look, I guess the front half looks light.

I guess for now, I will have to see until the end of summer, if I want to get back into airsoft. THEY SURE LOOK NICE AND SO REAL. Yeah, save your money and buy the best gun you can and you will enjoy it more.

The problem is I like so many toys but I don't have enough $$ to satisfy my lust for toys/hobby

Have a great weekend!!!
