1* the worst looking car ever made

TRF-801XT - as ugly as it gets. Quite impressive to make an uglier car than the hideous "modern" buggies that look like lunar vehicles.

2* the worst handling car ever made

Audi quattro/Opel Ascona Rally, Wild Willy - anyone spots the common denominator? That chassis is worse in terms of handling than the suspension of the Hilux/Blazer (which are otherwise capable cars). Yet, they are all still fun to drive!

3* the most fragile car ever made

The Jug drive train is lousy, but the rest of it is not bad. A model where both chassis and body fell apart once you even told it you were going to run it was the XR311/Cheetah chassis. They broke the rear suspension before they hit sufficient speed to roll over and wreck the body.

The worst looking Tamiya ever made is a tie between the Striker and any of the High-Lifts trucks. The stock Toyota High-Lift is WAY too ugly.

My two cents.

Best to you all,

Yes, the Hilux, with them stock tiny wheels, and the depressing surf rich kid modifications, dark glass, dark chrome, horrible fat shocks, and so overboardly lifted. You have to admit you have to deal with LOTS of imagination to think this is a beautiful truck in its stock version. Look what I had to do with it to make it look just half decent:

While I can agree that the High-Lift F350 is abit of a minger, you can't compare it to the likes of the Striker...

For starters, the F350 can be made to look good...

I'm so with you on that one. Plus the worse handling - rubbish offroad. All it does is wheely but the long rear bed is fragile and splinters. Plus it had poofy pink wheels. :)

Very disappointed with mine and sold it.

I personally always liked the Bush Devil, then again I liked all the pick-ups! So I am bias!

My fav for design and looks is teh Sand Scorcher.

The Manta Ray in my own personal opinion was and still is awful.

the manta ray's lineage excuses it from this discussion, look at all the awesome cars that decended from the manta ray, top force's, ta01's, ta02's...

the manta ray is awesome.

i vote for anything thats a dt02, looks like a race car, smells like a race car, turns like a grasshopper. (and i love grasshoppers)

The most fragile I would probably say the original Hotshot (hit a bump and something would snap)

but one that fits in all 3 catagories has to be the Baja champ very plain and ugly body, based on the TL01 chassis which snaps as soon as you look at a jump and handles so well its no fun not even a hint of over steer or anything

atleast the manta ray was a solid car even if it did'nt have looks LOL

I agree, I also have a soft spot for the Manta ray for it is the mother of many a great car :-)

As far as uglyness is concerned the striker and the rest of the so called "space ship type buggies" (I like this term!! LOL), that look hideous!!, would have to be at the top of my list. The worst handling from what i hear the SRB's seemed to play dead if you turned a corner quickly!! so they would probably be up there and as far as fragility goes from my own personal experience the Holiday Buggy / Sand Rover front shock mounts collapse if you dare drive one or look at them for long enough for that matter!!! LOL

Just my tuppence worth :)

We have a winner!

The Striker is about as official as they come to being known as the worst Tamiya model. When the collecting boom took hold in the early 90s and prices for everything were huge people were finding it impossible to shift Striker NIB kits for 15-20. Really!

How can you possibly say that, when Tamiya state "The Striker - With superb styling and fan-tastic performance" :)

I like the looks of the Desert Gator (DT02) and I have to say it's robust as well. My son and I own 3 of them, and have failed to break anything so far. Handling is acceptable, if you fit oil shocks and get the spring rate right (medium-hard / hard rear, medium-soft front).

The Durga looks terrible, but handles very, very well. Also it's pretty high maintenance.

Wow - that gator is slick looking... I agree.

Ugliest would be the Striker as so many people mentioned... someone wrote identity crisis - I couldn't agree more... 80s F1 on buggy wheels - I mean LOL (you tube promotional video)!

Best looking as to what I've seen must be the F-350, although I've fallen completely in love with the Yota FJ-40 on the CR-01 chassis... saving up for the latter :(

Most fragile - don't know. Havn't got too much to compare with  Just own a Hummer M1025, bought in the early nineties and it is still absorbing a pounding :)

I agree the Striker is pretty ugly.

It does nothing for me .

But being a 5861 for a first 100 collector its a must they may have been hard to sell originally but now they are quite expensive I purchased a NIB tonight on ebay in an open auction for AUD$328.99 and it was a hard fought auction.

Can anybody tell me what is that white round thing near the drivers right arm  see link for close up picture of the cockpit .

The white round thing between the drivers arms is to allow room for the nut and arm on top of the MSC i suspect.

Out of curiousity, I just used http://www.rba.gov.au/calculator/annualDecimal.html

....and AU$150 in 1986, is the same as AU$327.57 in 2009. I'm thinking you got it for pretty much exactly what it used to cost back in 1986/1987  (At least it hasn't gone down in value).

the striker is a favourite of mine

i built my one from mostly new parts trees (except the main chassis) a couple of years back

was surprisingly cheap to do!

i had one back in 1987 when they had just come out. 2 weeks after building the chassis snapped. the shop i bought it from supplied me a new one. that snapped too after 1 week.

i do like these cars, for nostalgic reasons - it was my second rc.

but yes they are pretty poor quality! flimsy as a holiday buggy.

it did go well though. before i run over a matchstick and chassis turned to dust. poooof.

That is pretty good then H I paid bang on the 1986 price even with demand for the kit .

That is a handy convertor you used I just had a look at it and my wife hit me up to see what prices were in the 1980's I might just save that to favourites.

Cheers ;)
