Some Antics stores still have them but their codes are all wrong for some reason, and the paints they had in Coventry were mainly in the dull range of colours.

probably quite alot to do with companies not allowed to use solvents in any products anymore thanks to the EU.

sounds like a perfect opportinuty for some one to bring loads in from usa and sell them to the needy here. Only problem is bringing them over, dought your allowed to bring them on a plane what with them being pressurised continers and everything.

Correct, you can't, you'd have to have them brought over by sea

Even then you'd probably have to pay a 'premium' price as they'd be classed as a dangerous substance

My understanding was that the problem is/was one of labelling - all the paints had been recalled to have new labels put on, warning about high VOCs ... but after so long, this excuse is wearing very thin ;)

I've been using Humbrol "Hobby Spray" Acrylic paint, and have found it to be excellent - good coverage, glossy finish, and dries very quickly (though I always try to leave it at least a week before handling). I doubt if I'd buy Tamiya paints in preference if they become available again. The only question mark is on polycarbonate shells - it's supposed to be suitable, but I haven't tried it yet.

This isn't a catch-all endorsement of all humbrol paints though - their "Modellers Spray Paint" range I've found to leave a dusty finish that really need rubbing out, and has for their acrylic brush paints, various uncomplimentary phrases come to mind, not least of which would be "wobbly finish" and "very poor colour match".

EDIT - I just realised that the Humbrol "Modellers Spray Paint" range has replaced the "Hobby Spray" Acrylic. It's ostensibly the same thing, but proudly says "new formula" on the can

The whole solvent issue is to do with vehicle bodyshops, and such like, who use over a certain tonneage a year, thus the change from solvent bourne, to water based paints. What makes a mockery of it to me is that after applying the water based colour, it has to be covered with a solvent based clear lacquer!!

There are concessions for paints that are used for hobbyists, so we should be OK, and I would suspect that it is a labelling issue. This is the explanation I have been given by my LHS.

They are supposed to be in stock again in the uk in 2009. No firm date yet, but i would say around march-june as that is what was stated originally for this year. ;)

Surely you can buy aerosols from abroad and airmail to the UK (i.e. shipping via airplane), otherwise how can you pack deodrants and hairspary etc in your checked baggage when going on holiday? Or is it that the paint is considered a toxic chemical, more than the risk of a aerosol potentially exploding?

Nope, all pressure pack has to be sea freight.

Since I last flew and bought a tin of Pringles, and saw how the vacuum seal had ballooned out and made me appreciate how an aircraft cabin isn't nearly pressurised at sea level pressure.

Aerosols can be taken onboard as hand baggage so long as they don't exceed 100ml

Spray paint is classed as a flammable substance and can't be carried on planes
