I'm thinking of giving brushless a shot. I have an old Twin Detonator lying around to try it on. The truck has been converted to 2wd and has full bearings. Will the Castle Sidewinder 5700 set-up work safely in this vehicle. I'm not overly knowledgable about brushless yet and I don't want to burn up the motor or something. :D I also know I'll need a steel pinion and alloy hexes for the wheels. I see Novak has a new budget system called the Havok as well. Any suggestions? I've heard mostly good about Castle stuff though.

I think someone on RCMT (down right now) had a brushless Blackfoot Xtreme. I don't remember what the setup was, but it was too powerful as I recall. One thing you will probably need to do is change the dogbones to thicker ones from Ofna or get some CVD's. A milder system like the Novak stock-equivalent might not be too much for a Twin Det.....

I had a Wild Dagger (same truck as TD) with two BZs. It was pretty quick and I bashed it hard, and eventually wore it out. These trucks are tough. When I ran 2WD in the truck it was just too slow, as the power on understeer was too great. 4WD made a huge difference.

I am currently fitting a Sidewinder 4600kV setup to my Losi Desert Truck. As the Sidewinder puts out only 2/3 the power of a Mamba Max, this should help the life of your truck. Monitor your motor temp and get your pinion size correct (18T?), but I'd imagine the spur will chew up quickly as it is plastic. Not a great issue, as you will have a front gearbox at the waiting!! :P

The final RPM of both ESCs is the same, the difference is in how long it takes it to get there under load. 5700Kv is a pretty high revving motor for a truck. I don't know if you will be able to get the gearing right for what is really a touring car motor. The ESC will have no issues in a Twin Det, they have built in thermal protection, the CM36s motor may not like it much though.

With the 5700Kv in the likes of a Lunchbox or Grasshopper I'm using an 11T pinion and it's crazy fast still, rarely pull more than 1/2 throttle. Short sharp stab of the throttle will flip the truck backward onto it's roof missing the wheelie bar completely.

I've considered doing the twin brushless setup in a Twin Det myself. I would use the Mamba (tuned with PC) or Sidewinder ESCs with lower Kv motors, 2000Kv for example. The Castle ESCs will power other brand brushless motors and have no limit for brushed motors.
