Hi there,

I have a bunch of Vintage models (Sand Scorcher, Rough Rider, JPS F1 and Chevy Blazing Blazer) I was wondering in the process of restoring them will it devalue them if I put in new radio gear and Brushless conversions? I will still keep all the old radio gear and speedies but I would like to upgrade all gear to new stuff.

I want to run them (in a massive car park where they cant get damaged) everynow and again so I was thinking about the coversions.

Cheers

If anything I would think that running the MSC would degrade the value as it's a wear item. Do yourself a favor and put the MSC in a bag in a box in a closet and run an ESC. Better driveability and longer runtimes are all you have to gain...

Yeah I was thinking that.

I have enough parts to make 1 good Sand Scorcher 1 good Rough Rider and a hackabout Sand Scorcher. So I might keep the good 2 in original condition and build a bullet of a Sand Scorcher. Defintaley want to put ESC in the Blazer and F1

While for a runner an ESC is infinitely preferable, when dealing with these vintage cars, a collector is going to prefer it if the car is complete with its original speed controller. This is especially true for cases like the old Hilux, that had interesting speed controllers. The Blazer only had the standard 3-step mechanical, from what I remember. Not a huge amount of difference in price, but it will be important to some collectors, and may influence value.

As you say, you're keeping these parts, not binning them, so as long as they're present it won't affect value.

I always run esc in my vintage runners. The msc's have just disadvantages. I also run not to much strong motors since these old gears, especially for the SRB's where never designed for stronger motors rather than the black motor. Also the chassis are not designed for so much power and speed and damages are more likely to happen. I have not much experience with brushless motors other than in my helicopter, but I'd expect that the gear would not stand the brushless power. Just my 50 cent.

To a collector is all about the condition of the model. I for one would not mind if a ESC was installed say on the Blazer provided you still have the MSC and no hack job was done on the frame or body inorder to accommondate the ESC. I think most vintage collectors would prefer the original set up and even if one does a good job in modifying the model, only buyers that like what you did will buy and that could reduce the demand hence a lower selling price in the end.

I have an old RR where I've only changed the brass metal bearings to ball bearings but kept all the brass bearings just in case I want to sell it in the future and the buyer wants 100% stock. I keep the old MSC since performance and run time will not be an issue plus I've only ran it a few times so no big deal.

You could always look for a vintage ESC. My Grasshopper has the old Novak I bought for it over 20 years ago.

Since I plan on running them, I have upgraded my Frog and Bruiser to ESCs. If they ever do get retired to the shelf I'll probably put them back to the original MSC. I've saved the parts and they can both be converted back without any trouble.

All my Vintage stuff runs ESC, MSC is just too much of a pain for me. I Have the original type MSC's for my vintage stuff though, and they're wrapped up in the bottom of a box.

The only car I am running at the moment with a MSC is my Blazing Blazer. But this too will be getting an ESC in the not too distant future, along with new servo's for the gearshift, and the steering. Simple reason being that the car has all it's original vintage radio gear, which is in excellent working condition, and I want to keep it that way. I'm buying brand new radio gear for my King Hauler, so I'll use that for the Blazer as well, and put the old Acoms set away somewhere safe :D

How much of a bullet?? I am not familiar with the SRB's gearbox (strength), so I would 'TEST the WATER' before putting in a wild ESC/Motor combo. Just to be on the safe side...
