What about the 501, 801? Theyre the most advanced AND functional buggies tamiya has ever put out. Not to mention any of their on road race chassis. They must be low tech, because they dont come with battery straps and do not include a motor. :)

Well I'd have to say it HAS to be s vintage model because Tamiya has not made anything too technical lately. I'd venture to say the 3 speed tranny is the winner here. Technical means functionly sound so the Avante is out on that one.

I am excited about the new 801.... I think I want one. However, they do not break new ground. Please tell me what makes them so technical and advanced? what is on the 801 that hasnt been done by the O Donnel Truggy, or Losi 8ight T???

Not much from what I know but you can say that about most of all 1/8 scale truggy and buggy MAKERS, they all look close and designed alike :)

Aye, they're all based on the Kyosho Burns I'd say...

My vote goes for the 959, it just looks technically brilliant with or without its body and all squeezed into 1/12 scale. The Celica GR.B with is slipper clutch is even more advanced.

IMO Tamiya's biggest leap forward, would be the Avante over the Hotshot...

- Twin plate FRP chassis

- No MSC

- Mid-level control arms in line with the driveshaft

- Adjustable Camber

- Adjustable front & rear Toe

- Alloy wheel hex

- Steering turnbuckles

- Real hopup options

- Small lightweight planetary gear diffs

- Center ball diff

- Infinitely adjustable pinion mesh

- Alloy uprights

- Lexan undertray (that isn't flat)

- Cam lock wheels

- Full ball bearings

- Full ball joint suspension

- Independent coil-over oil-filled aluminum shocks

- Bell crank steering

- Front universal joints

- Suspension that doesn't grind on the wheels

- etc...

So if the Avante had all this, why didn't it leave the competition far behind?

I think it was a change from the typical static model to RC set up and away from the real car design as neither worked well in 1/10 scale. The engineers at the time didn't have advance program to see which design in combination with other design would work or not. I would say Tamiya over engineered the Avante and made the design more complicated than need be. Compititors may have more engineering background than Tamiya hence have more simple yet effective design so when the Avante did came out, other makes have better design already hence lucky if Avante could bit anything

Well if you must know, it would seem the Avante was an engineers car with no actual racer's feedback in development. Because of this it had a hard time competeing. In fact Team TRF was founded simply to figure out how to make the Avante better.

What would you say is the most technically advanced that you could buy now? Say in:

Touring

Buggy

Truck

Obviously the most recent TRF car in this category. In fact, some would be considered the most advanced of all brands (when they win world championships like the 416WE :P)...

OK, I've been reading this with great interest!!

How about the TL01?? (I'm probably gonna get blasted for that one!) OK, not the most advanced chassis in terms of suspension, tunability, etc, but I think that the 4WD layout is really clever, and trick. I have 2, and they're great fun, especially the modified one with all the options fitted.

Hotshot. I think that the rear mono-shock set up on this one is really clever. Far better engineered than the Super Champ version.

Hi-Lux/ Blazing Blazer. IMHO, a fine piece of scale engineering. Just a shame they didn't fit them with any suspension! :P

14th scale Tractor Trucks. Same reasons as Hi-Lux, and Blazer.

So............Where do you guy's think "The Frog" fits into all this?? pretty well me thinks :) Much faster, lighter, and more stable than any of the SRB range, and can turn on a six pence. Really easy to drive.

Can you buy one, or are they run by the factory team only?

The Avante is like mitsubishis 3000gt. Techical, engineered like a Japanese flagship model usually is, but no one races on paper. The best performace cars in the world are simple. When you start to over complicate something you introduce the margin of error. Germans are known for this.

The Avante was a show off in my opinion. With that said, hey it is nice sometimes to see forward thinking. I bet if the avante was priced 35% less it would have caught on and been appreciated as a daily driver and not a racer.

The 416WE (world edition) is starting to find it's way into peoples hands right now. It's got all the same modifications they were running at the Worlds a week ago:

- Flexier one-piece upper deck

- New battery position (more forward)

- New motor mount

- Short suspension arms

- Wider suspension blocks

- Bigger front bumper

- etc...

They even include the new TRF Fluorine Sealed bearings and bronze color "High Lubrication" damper cylinders. RC Champs preorder is $449 (from what I've heard)...

Ironic, but bt least something good came out of it.
