Brushed or brushless

brushed-ko vfs. This little thing packs punch

BL-speedpassion gt. Throttle response is so crisp. small footprint.

Brushed ESC- my Novak GTX is AWESOME, and the small footprint is great!

Brushless ESC- I like my LRP Sphere, it needs the comp conversion on it though so it can run lower Turn motors..

I race the Tamiya Volac (KO VFS-1) and it's great. Rob's GTX is extremely powerful as well. These tiny ESCs make them very versitile. Plus they are very inexpensive since everyone wants brushless now ($70 new is the best I've seen)...

For brushless I've only used the Novak GTB, and I have no complaints...

Honestly it's all pretty much the same unless you REALLY know what your doing. Any of the top units could win on any day...

serious... I picked up 2 vfs comps, one new, one slightly used with the programmer thingy for 100 bucks. With lipo, brushed is def still a viable option.

LRP has a new one coming out soon. It's called the SSX or XXS or something like that. It's smaller and should be great...

BTW: Tamiya has their own Volac version of the sphere hitting shelves soon...

MambaMax for both brushed and brushless. No other ESC comes close for tune ability. There is no limit on brushed motors. The stated rating of the ESC is about 1/2 what it's capable of, so if used within spec there's no fear of damaging it.

Tamiya MFC units for realism, so much fun to drive. Clutch adds a whole new dimension.

Brushed, MRT TSX, nothing comes close, plus you can order one with custom LED's and cases. Mine was a white LED and a clear case.

Brushless, Speed Passion. I have an LPF and an SP 13.5, its easily the quickest 13.5 combo I've seen.

Brushed: Mtroniks LP6 i love the size of thing its fully waterproof and it packs a punch.

Brushless: i have only used a novak sport but its a good all round brushless system.

I am looking into the Losi 1/10 Xcelorin S 4.5T Brushless Combo because its cheap and it can hanle 11.1v for my speedboat.

Has anyone used this speedo and is it any good?

Purely for the budget basher, i dont think you can beat the Mtronic eco20 types (as low as 15), for bang for buck as a cheap upgrade from Tamiya stock TEU ESC. Cant comment on mid/ high end ESCs.

Brushed - KO VFS-1 and all its declinations (Tamiya Volac, Hara Twister, and the others)... simply the absolute best ESC, period, there's a reason why this was the last world champ brusherd ESC in the most demanding category (Andy Moore in touring car, 2006).

Brushless - I think the Hobbywing 35A controller is a stunning blow to the RC electronics market, making the other manufacturers make nightmares! Great "coup" from the chinese, good job guys :P

Tekin RS-Pro

Never ran anything in racing other than a Tekin since I started racing back in 89.

I have a Tekin G11 Pro, I love it!

My TRF 416 still has no ESC. We are in the middle of buying a home, which means my hobby must wait lol

Easy.... my favourite brushed ESC is a Talking Electronics Xenon 9. Simple reason: I built it myself from a kit!

Sure, it's not current race spec (released in late 80s - early 90s), but hey, who else can say they run an ESC that they built from a kit of parts????

Besides...... you can still buy the kit and build one yourself!!!

Mtroniks Viper, ratings from 27 to unlimited (well 8 turn if you read the blurb), easy setup & completely waterproof.

Before all the Mtroniks haters start ranting, I have something like 25 to 30 of their ESC's & not once have I had one fail.

I know others have had issues in the past, but Mtroniks also have a reputation for top notch customer service.

My 2p.

@ Incredible_Serious, do you have a link to the ESC kit ?

since this one is bumped back up.......

Novak Hammer Pro

favourite speedo of all time ever.

For Brushed motors the GTX is nice and simple, and tough !

I run a GTS in my M03.

Just waiting on picking up my new Orca unit for brushless. Should be good !

Brushed

Has to be my Hara Twister 2.2/Tamiya Volac MS. I love these ESC's, the fact they're small means they'll fit into anything, they're a top spec and are pretty tough, which I have found out with the Volac after submerging it and running a 10t motor in a 2.5kg truck for almost a whole day straight of racing.

Brushless

Not sure yet, only ever had two which have both lasted around 4 months before giving up. First I had an LRP AI Brushless reverse which just died on me one day. Next was a Novak GTB, which recently caught fire on me. Third time lucky with a Xerun 120a speedo? I sure hope so!

IIRC, the XeRun is the sensored version of the EzRun, all put out by Hobbywing which means, IMHO, it's the discount line of Speed Passion. I'm running the EzRun sensorless setup in my DB01 and have two more that I put in whatever I feel like messing with. Never had a problem with any of them and the things are fast. Running the 9T/35A setup in a touring car I was asked if I was running the mod class. To be perfectly honest, the thing was too fast for me to drive well and I picked up enough bad habits trying to drive it, I pulled it out and run the motor and esc for bashing now.

For your GTB, how old was it? I recently had a Havoc burn up on me. Novak replaced it with no questions asked. Through the grape vine, I heard they had a bad batch of MOSFETS from their supplier. At my local track there were two incidents I know of where Novak ESCs came out of the box, into the car, and started on fire when powered up..

Don't mean to beat up on Novak. They put out a quality product that I use and like. They had some bad luck with a supplier, but they also took responsibility and my problem was taken care of, which is all I can really ask for.
