mongoose1983 3357 Posted December 3, 2008 Hey you! I thought some of you guys would be interested in seeing a picture of the 1:1 Toyota pick up truck. It's the first time I see a picture of the real thing -Must admit I was a bit dubious of its existence. All the best to Y'all! EB --
Singapore_959 18 Posted December 3, 2008 very realistic. You did a good job with that. What part number are those wheels? Interesting. Looks wierd eh?
Singapore_959 18 Posted December 3, 2008 Actually the more I look at it, it looks more like a the rear wing panel has been removed and what we are seeing is the the uncovered wheelhousing and bodyframe. What a strange design to release. Still less places to clog up with mud and gunk to rust out later.
B.M.T. 127 Posted December 3, 2008 That tray/bed/what ever they are called in your neck of the woods looks very much like an after market fiberglass flareside tray that was popular in Australia about 15 years ago. Most of them ended up on lowered Holden utes.
markbt73 5706 Posted December 4, 2008 Actually the more I look at it, it looks more like a the rear wing panel has been removed and what we are seeing is the the uncovered wheelhousing and bodyframe. What a strange design to release. It's what's called a "step-side." Instead of having wheel wells inside a full-width pickup bed, they add fenders to the outside of a square bed. It's actually the original design for a pickup truck; full-width pickup beds didn't appear until the late '50s. Up until a few years ago, all three American truck makers still offered them on their trucks. The straight-sided ones have a lot more room in the bed, but sometimes contractors like the stepside so they can grab things out of the forward part of the bed easier. And some people (like my wife) prefer the looks of them.
Tamiya1/10 382 Posted December 4, 2008 I don't think Toyota actually put out the truck shown in the photo. I would say the owner replaced the box type bed with the side-step type. The Brusier (add on rear cab) and Mountaineer (roll bar) are the only truck that Toyota has put out, except not sure if the roll bar is a factory or dealer or after market option and the rear cab which enter from the main cabinet may not even exist. Hmm, it would appear that you're right... every instance of "Toyota stepside" I looked up was followed by the word "conversion." There was a Chevy LUV stepside available in the late '70s; maybe some of those beds found their way onto Toyota frames as years went by.
Blacque Jacque 4 Posted December 5, 2008 The step-side was indeed a conversion, I remember seeing them advertised in the mags of the day; 4-Wheeler etc, It's quite possible that the conversion was offered as a dealer fit in the US, maybe Aus too. I don't know for certain back then, but these days you can certainly buy a Hilux with no bed & fit other things.
mongoose1983 3357 Posted February 10, 2009 I wonder if anybody of you have any other pictures of the 1:1 Toyota pick-up. It would be nice to see more examples of the real thing.
bruiserbuilder 13 Posted February 11, 2009 I know that folks used to put the chevy luv bed on their toyota to customize it back in the early 1980's. I hear that there was also a fiberglass bed made back them called the "california custom". it looked just like the vintage hilux bed. I have never found proof that Toyota sold a stepside bed on the show room floor.
twisty 8 Posted February 11, 2009 Pretty sure i got this pic from TC forum a while ago. re-found it on Google and it says it is a custom jobby but they must of been available, maybe as an option body.
MonsterYeti 0 Posted February 11, 2009 The real thing is awesome ! I run an 08 plate extended cab ( small rear seat arrangement) in silver. 2.5 turbo diesel. The 2.4 is under powered the 3.0 a bit thirsty. Previously before getting my new one i ran an R reg (97) from new selling it with 250,000 miles on the clock. Original engine, gearbox replaced at 60.000. As i said awesome, and this from a land rover enthusiast

TA-Mark 195 Posted February 24, 2009 I scanned this picture from the front of one of my old 4x4 magazines. It's a High-Lifted Hi-Lux with the Chevy step-side tray fitted. Biggest surprise to me was it was legally registered in Australia. I'm very sure it was a petrol V8 engine fitted to it too (Holden 253cui). Sadly the story from the inside of the mag is gone. Centre spread was the Hi-Lux and it lived as a poster on my wall for years. Half of the story was on the backside of the poster. The remainer of the images had been cut out for kids school book pictures over the years. I really hope someone combines the old and new Hi-Lux kits and builds this
Blacque Jacque 4 Posted February 24, 2009 Perhaps there's a market for repro rear beds, plus a cab back wall ? But then how silly would it look teetering on the Hi-Lift chassis

TA-Mark 195 Posted February 24, 2009 Is that even a Toyota? **Looks at topic again** I thought we were looking for photos of real Toyota Hi-Lux's with Chevy step-side beds fitted.
Live Steam Mad 17 Posted February 26, 2009 These photo's show just how well Tamiya copied the Hilux ;- I got them from the link above. Appologies to the person who posted them (for me copying them here) but they are useful reference images for the purposes of vintage Tamiya models. Obviously I am ignoring the rear bed here as this hasn't got the flareside rear bed. Odd how those seats look quite like the ones from my Ford Fiesta MK6?! Cheers, Alistair G. lentner3 328 Posted February 26, 2009 It's the 4x4 Hilux from back to the future, I really want one but there hard to come by in this spec in the u.k. now Single cab hi lift 4x4 with the chrome roll bar and all the lights etc. So nice might have to settle for the tamiya version.
