Right, you need to use the hex box spanner on the hex, and on the other end put the long output shft in situ, place an allen key or similar, what ever you have that will fit and undo.

See the pic.

I think with this style diff, you tighten the diff bolt all the way. The little black rings act as circular springs that tension the diff properly, so double check they are all in the correct way (they have a 'narrow' side and a 'wide' side), and you used the correct number of springs.

If you have a shaft joint in each side of the diff and turn them opposite directions, it should turn, but will have a moderate amount of resistance. It should be smooth and not notchy.

Another test is putting a hex wrench/allen key in both drive shafts, and then while holding these in place try and move the differential gear. If it doesn't move, then it should be fine.

And you can try holding the diff spur gear, and turning one output shaft on the diff, or holding the output shaft and turning the diff gear. The other shaft should turn on its own, with a bit of resistance.

If the output shafts and diff gear can turn any which way, then the diff is too loose.

Just make sure that you used the correct ball differential grease, and not ceramic grease. Ball differentials are sensitive to the correct grease being used.
