I've recently built my first RC car - a Lunchbox - and really enjoyed it and aim to build a few more re re's/tamiyas. However, I also fancy doing some racing, and as much as I love Tamiya's I know that unless I spend mega bucks I'm not likely to be competitive. Soooo, this is a long way round of asking if there are any electric ready to run buggies that are raceable out of the box or require minimum upgrading? I noticed the Traxxas Bandit XL-5 looks very tempting at the price but is it any good as a starting point?

If you are racing 1/10th off road and want an RTR that's somewhat competitive there's only one option. The Team Associated B4 RTR The only upgrades it would need is to change the tyres to whatever works best at your local track and once you are used to it you might look at upgrading the motor and ESC, but you will be doing that to any RTR you buy. As the vast majority of buggy racers will be using B4s there will be plenty of help in getting your suspension tuned in.

The Traxxas Bandit is a good basher but not a good racer. Running a Bandit you will find you are the only person running it, so there will be no help in setting it up and no one will have any spares for it if you break anything. To match the Associated B4 the Bandit would need adjustable turnbuckles, the ball diff upgrade, the pivot pins replaced with the upgrade set and highly likely the shocks will need replacing as there are no alternative springs from Traxxas to tune the suspension, all of which means the B4 is cheaper.

i'm a firm believer that race cars should be in kit form only. if you build it from scratch you will be more able to due repairs quickly.

plus then you also have a choice in shock oils, grease, ect...

Same here but times have changed. The RTR Losi XXX and B4 are amazing out of the box! A local Losi/Tekin sponsored Racer started 3 years ago with a RTR. Oh BTW this kid is still in High School!!
