Postie just bought me my latest ebay win- new built Touareg for £70 [:D]

No radio in it, so just rolling it around the floor. Doesn't seem to have much steering lock. Is this right? Can it be increased?

How good are the propshaft uJ's? Do they last a lot longer than the old brass SRB ones?

Many thanks.

Hi, and congrats on your purchase. My own Touareg is rebuilt for trialracing, and i have increased both the steering and suspension travel a bit, simply by cutting off the first points of contact between the parts with a sharp knife, both on the steering blocks and the suspension arms. (This sounds a bit confusing, but the primary idea is cutting off little by little, till you´re satisfied with the travel). Also, when increasing the suspension travel, you will have to remove a bit of the guardplate underneath the car, where the steeringarms come out, as the increased susp. travel will cause the st. arms to catch hold of the guard plate, locking the steering. As for the propshaft, as on the TXT-1, it is a good idea to keep a spare set, as they just wear out eventually. My Mounty has got uJ´s from Traxxas made of plastic, and they seem to last longer, and are easy to adjust in length. On my Touareg, i also use full diff lock both front and rear, for maximum traction, and have cut off every second "knob" on the tyres, from the inner and outer "knob-row" simply for not gathering all the mud in the small grooves, loosing the traction (Get the idea?) as the longer the distance between the knobs, makes it harder for the tread to "clog" with mud. (Please ask if you need a better explanation).

Also, i use Blitzer Beetle dampers on the rear, providing very good and long suspension travel, leaving the car nearly impossible to get stuck.. And no, i have not refitted mine with a shorter propshaft, to allow a different body, as it seems that the terrain-ability is much better with the long wheelbase, compared to the Wranglers and Pajeros of my friends. The Touareg body is really ugly, but with the type of trialling that we do, it is bound to be destroyed anyway, so what the heck?

I am however planning a "re-bodying" using a Clodbuster shell, as i have seen done with spectacular outcome in here.. This will NOT be used for trialling, however...

Have fun with your XC..

Cheers..

I've run my Pajero a fair bit and have noticed quite a bit of wear on the propshaft uJs, I would change to a Traxxas slider shaft but I don't run my XC enough to justify it at the moment. The best upgrade IMO is to alter the 4 link rear end to give more travel, something which can be done cheaply and easily. Have a look in my showroom for all the mods I have done to my XC while there is a more extreme example of what you can do in Westy's showroom.

They last longer than the brass ones but not as long as the hardened black ones found on the Super Champ. I think they are the toughest of all of the universal joints. I have bought used super champs that the uJ's looked thrashed but they were still relatively tight.

that's a pic of my side mounted servo setup. It pivots a bellcrank that has ball cups on it. I had to chop a skid plate screw pillar to get it out of the way. The tires on it are fully pneumatic, they are silicone sealed and locked, no foam, good for wet dirt or sand.

Wow, that's creative and a relative inexpensive mod.!!!

Also the the buttom-up real mount... surely will set the shell in high-heel style!

Here is a photo of the bottom.

It's basically a big screw passed through the skid plate that the upper part of the stock servo saver pivots on. By looking at the photo, you can see how it mounts up. I'm sure if I wanted to I could make a bearing setup. But now there is a huge hole there, I'll have to order a new skid. It's got some slop, but at least it can lock the wheels unlike the stock setup.

Been out driving again, this time on dry dirt. It climbs really well, even on the BFGs. I guess the Truck Puller helps. [:D] Locked rear diff and Castrol heavy grease in front one to give a sort of limited-slip effect.

Guess it's just long grass that is a problem, not sure if that's due to the tyres or low ground clearance [?]

Anyway tyres seem OK, at least for the summer. [:)]

I see that the Clod body can be made to fit. With same wheelbase, can Stampede fitting Proline bodies be used? Want a pickup or Jeep shell.

Many thanks all. [8D]
