The Ikea "Detolf" glass cabinet - dislike it or loathe it, it keeps turning up in the TC showrooms. It has one massive advantage over just about any other display case option - a price of around 34. The major disadvantages are that a- you have to go to Ikea to buy one, b- things in them attract almost as much dust as if they were just on a shelf, and c- the capacity is smaller than you'd think.

Given a- above & the chance your pride & joy won't fit in one (c-), I thought I'd share what I've found will & won't fit - and by "fit", I mean "will sit flat on the shelf without bits being squashed on the sides".

If anyone else wants to post any experiences they've had as to what will fit, I'll add them to the list - that way, in two years time when someone asks if so-and-so will fit, we can all vaguely remember this topic :D

Tamiya:

Clodbuster - no hway :)

FF01 - chassis will fit, but as soon as you put a shell on it, forget it

Fox - no (thanks dimblum)

Frog (stock bumper) - no, not without squishing the back tyres

Frog (with the Team CRP bumpers on the front and the back) - yes (thanks dimblum)

Grasshopper - yes

GrassHopper 2 - yes (thanks dimblum)

Hornet - haven't built mine yet, but almost certainly yes

HotShot - this is a 'very' snug fit (thanks dimblum)

Lunchbox - yes, with careful insertion

Midnight Pumpkin - yes, with careful insertion

Pajero MTW - no chance

Sand Rover - with J-Man's aluminum front bumper and no rear bumper. It will also fit with Mike00top's aluminum exhaust pipe (thanks dimblum)

Subaru Brat - no

Super Clodbuster - no :)

TA03F - chassis will fit, but as soon as you put a shell on it, forget it

TL01 - chassis will fit, body too if it doesn't overhang the bumpers by more than a few mm

Wild Willy M38 - yes

Wild Willy 2 - yes

Other makes:

Mardave Cobra - no

Mardave Meteor (SWB) - Yes

Mardave V12 - Yes

RC10 - generally no, but depends on exact model & what bumper is fitted

Schumacher Wildcat - no way

Cheers for the info Dude,

Me and the Mrs spent quite a lot of time trawling the net for cabinet, and cases, as my collection is starting to get a little out of control. Lots of time was spent measuring cars, comparing shelf sizes, etc, and no matter which one we looked at------No good.

So I have drawn up plans to make my own! It will be long enough for a King Hauler, with the reefer trailer, to sit on the top, and the shelves will be deep enough to fit my King Blackfoot, or Blazing Blazer. Trucks can fit 2 to a section bumper to bumper, and smaller stuff, such as Sand Scorcher, Frog, etc, can go three per section, parked at a slight angle.

This was the only solution I could see, without going the custom built route.

Someone is probably going to tell me otherwise now!!! (please do, it will save me a lot of work ;) )

I use this cabinet and want to buy more of them. So far it has done a real good job of keeping the dust off my shelf queens. The best lighting configuration I have found was to use two lights set toward the front and back of the case - that way it can cast light down the open areas in the glass and illuminate all the cars with some light.

The Frog actually will sit flat in the case. I was able to do it with the Team CRP bumpers on the front and the back.. Maybe the stock Tamiya bumper sticks out too far..

I can also confirm that it will fit the:

GrassHopper 2

Sand Rover - with J-Man's aluminum front bumper and no rear bumper. It will also fit with Mike00top's aluminum exhaust pipe

HotShot - this is a 'very' snug fit

It will not fit the:

Fox

I modified a couple of wider/deeper than average bookcases into display cases by using window seal strip on the front/outer edges, cutting perspex sheet to seal the entire front, sticking mitred lengths of pine stripwood to the outside of the perspex with double sided tape (and gluing the mitres), then carefully drilling a clearance hole through the strip & perspex near each corner, pilot holes in book case, and joining one t'other with self tappers.

It's fine if you don't need regular access, if you do, you'll need to do something like a piano hinge down one edge & clasps on the other. ;)

meh that square glass thing is only good for Tamtechs ;)

Best bookshelf for cars would have to be the BILLY 60 (shelves are 57x26cm)... alas it seems to be discontinued, only 40 & 80 still available today.

It strikes me that with the height of the compartments, it might be worth puting the cars up at an angle to show them off. That way almost any 1/10th should fit and show off the body and sides nicely. This could be more interesting than a car sitting on its normal pose on all 4 wheels.

This is good info, I have a couple detolfs already with my other collectibles, I have a few cars in transit too me which at this point I am doubt will fit, however I use these "flexi" stands for my macross collection

With come creative placement I think these could hold the cars at an angle, fit in the case using the height of the detolf "bays" and keep the cars off the wheels lessening stress and tire deformation over time.

BTW the 959 FITS without the practice bumper.

Awesome find for the flex stands. It looks like they would hold our Tamiya's as well. I'd much rather display mine at an angle instead of flat on the shelf.

P.S. I am also a big Macross/Robotech fan. Now I have to dig my stuff out of storage

Cool! ya those little rubber ends on the stands have good gripping action. I have seen some incredible posing using those little stands.

Awesome hornet you have btw.. was checking out your gallery randomly and saw it the other day.

Check out www.macrossworld.com, between here and their my wife is gonna kill me.

I use the FLRKE bookcase for touring cars:

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50081744

It doesn't have a glass door, but it's perfect for 1:10 touring or m-chassis. And it's only ?12.71 per unit.

For my bigger stuff, I got two shelf units from Focus (back in 2007, they might not be available now) - about 15 per unit and they can be bolted together as in this showroom entry here:

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.a...7&sid=15729

Note, the Ikea bookshelf is to the left in the last pic - this has books on it in the pic but now has M-chassis cars on its upper shelves.

Oh no! Now you are going to get me hooked on Macross again!! I'm married too and although my wife is cool with the Tamiya stuff, she might not be so cool with the Macross stuff  . One of the coolest toys I still have is this: http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/G...clone1.jpg.html

Thanks for the comment on the Hornet :D I am just getting back into my projects after taking a break for several months. I will have more on the way soon.

Are you going to setup a showroom soon?
