Tamiya Ta01 Escort Cossie Upgrade Advice

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone i've had a nosy about the forum but was looking for some help

Basically, I have a pretty much standard issue TA01 escort cossie, the battery's are shot and i ordered 2 off ebay, i basically went for 2 cheapies but its got me thinking now of uprating, I put the ball race bearing kit in a long time ago so planning on stripping the car and cleaning the gears etc and bearing and regreasing, what grease is best for the bearings/gears etc etc

also i had a dynatech o2h motor at the time but broke the plastic top mount and being young at the time think i threw it out, only jus searching ebay i seen the part i need for under 10quid ffs!! i'll have another look to confirm if i threw it out

what would advice be on mods?

i'm still using a mechanical speed controller and just normal acoms techniplus controller, tbh this isnt gonna be raced competitive its more for a bit of fun and a bit of a model car?

i dunno where to start?

these are the batteries i ordered, altho i9 have a feeling you guys will tell me theyre rubbish??

yeah i had a quick read thru there but it all got a bit technical for me lol... its 12 years or so since i looked at these things i think, used to have a lot of rc car mags but threw them all out so cant even brush up on it.

whats the brushless setup?

i don't wanna spend an awful lot of money on it, but cud do some mods over time

shud i be looking at uprating the motor and an electriconic speed controller?

just had a nosy at the gears etc they seem quite clean and in good nick no real signs of wear, and i have a spare TA01 chassis i can rob parts from if need be

First 2 things you need on a TA-01 before anything else is a full bearing set and an alloy motor mount. Manta-Ray (DF-01) is the same bearing set, the motor mount fits TA-01, TA-02 and DF-01.

Next replace the plastic drive hexes on the wheels with alloy clamp style ones. The plastic ones get hot while running and fold over the cross pin and drag on the bearing sheild slowing the car. This is exaggerated if you over-tighten the wheel nuts.

Next Item to replace is the gearset. Use the TA-02 all plastic gearsets so it will remove any alloy gears from the driveline. The alloy is soft and wears fast, faster the more powerful motor you bolt in.

Pinion for the motor is next, use STEEL only. RW Racing or Robinson Racing both make steel 0.6mm metric pinions. 21T pinion is suitable for 27 turn motors (kit motor), smaller pinion the lower the motor turn. 19 turn motor will need a 19T or 18T pinion depending on the motor spec (different brands have different power curves).

Pull that MSC out, they damage TA-01 gearboxes as they can go forward<->reverse without first needing the car to stop (kills the idlers gears and pops the gear cover up). The ESC needs to be rated better than the motor you use. A 15 turn speed gem motor will have this chassis flying, powered with an 11 turn limit ESC. Similar price is go straight to one of the EZ-Run brushless systems. If you've read many of the brushless threads here, brushless is more about longer runtime and no maintainence than all out speed.

Next in order is get rid of the 'coathanger' driveshaft for a Top-Force or aftermarket solid unit. The wire one will flex with powerful motors and slap on the upper battery cover slowing the car and eventually flex so far it spits out leaving you with a 2WD until you find where it flew to in the grass.

From here, things like FRP chassis plates and alloy suspension components will improve handling and strength. Nice list of part numbers on my DF-01 build (same chassis except for the long arm suspension).

The packs you bought will be fine. They will successfully power either the brushed or brushless setup I suggested. Cheap cells it's more a worry about how many cycles they will do before they fail to take charge more so than their power output new. I have 1 cheapy basher pack that still charges to more than it's stated capacity and it's 15 years old with 1000+ cycles on it (rare case I must admit). Most of my basher packs die at about 1/2 their stated cycle life.

I put the upgrades in order of importance. Should make it nice and easy to follow. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

legend!! many thanks, thats the sorta thing i'm looking for i'll have a re read ere and start trying to price up some of the kit, i dont wanna go mad ere as i have 3 road going cars which drain me of funds as it is!! but if i cud spend a few quid wisely it would give me some cheap thrills so to speak!!

i have the ball race bearing set in, would that suffice, think it was relatively pricy back in the day 40quid or so?

also where are the best palces to look for these things online?

ok so i'm assuming my ball race bearing kit is ok, what else i have found is as follows:

Alloy motor mount

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=190287784781

The hex alloy replacement

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=330309993881

Is this the TA-02 gearset i need?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tamiya-50529-4WD-Tou...A1%7C240%3A1318

I wuda thought stronger metal items would have been available for these

The pinion i had a nosy on RW racing and seen them but no prices and from what i gather i need to decide on ESC and motor to determine pinion size? It looks like i chucked out my dynatech so i'll need to go looking for a motor, can someone point me in the right direction for a reasonably priced motor? maybe 25-35/40quid? are the tamiya sport tuned motors any use?

also there can someone suggest a reasonably priced esc and necessary pinion?

cant seem to find strengthened 4x4 drive shaft?

also gonna need som tires for it as the standard issue ones are pretty much shot, maybe new wheels too, jeepers this is getin to be quite a list!! i've one of the classic beetles too i was hopin to give it a once over, wont be happenin at this rate lol

The motor mount will work, but just note it is for 22T to 18T pinions where as the standard one and the standard replacements are for 21T to 16T pinions.

Alloy Hex drives will be perfect.

That's the correct gearset. There are no steel replacements available. The alloy versions of the same gears are very soft and wear quickly. The plastic ones I've been running for many months with very powerful brushless motors with no wear. (I do regrease regularly as the TA-** gearboxes are so easy to work on without dismantling the entire chassis, I use Tamiya ceramic grease for gears and Tamiya ball-diff grease for the rear ball diff).

I only see 1 aftermarket main driveshaft on feebay, JR-RC ebay shop and search for TA01. These can be hard to find.

Futaba MC330CR ESC (13 turn limit) and a Tamiya RZ 23 turn motor would be a good combination. The Tamiya Sport Tuned is not much quicker than the stock silvercan 540. A 19 turn Orion motor is about $50US and would make it go rather quick and still work fine with the Futaba ESC.

The RW Racing and Robinson Racing pinions are usually $2.50->$3.00 $US each, for the sake of $10 it's worth grabbing a range (18T,19T,20T). I actually paid more in postage than I did on the 4 pinions.

Many replacement wheels/tyres out there. If you are just carpark bashing a cheap set of pre-mounted chrome finish 3Racing wheels will do the trick. 26mm is the size to look for, though the chassis will fit 30mm wide wheels on the rear.

Try a worldwide ebay search for TA01, it's not Tamiya brand, APRC or something.

Yeap, that's him.

Yeap, pretty good ESC that one.

Neither of these will fit. The only heatsink I have found that fits is for the TL-01/DT-02

.

This is a TA-02, but same gearboxes and heatsink. This one is from a TL-01.

Standard Dampers with $5.00 hopup spring set. Better to save the cash get some TRF dampers. The modern ones will still fit the older chassis.

Old tyres have a habit of doing that. You should see what happens to old perished SRB tyres when you spin them up with the MambaMax. Hahahaha. Look something like yours, except just a few more pieces flew everywhere.

The posting of live eBay links is not allowed if you check the forum rules. Hence why I've not pasted the link to the hopup main driveshaft.

well i've ordered some bits and pieces, and theyve started to arrive, i'm plannin to sorta rebuild it and clean everything up a bit, upgrading some of the parts as I go, TA Mark has given me a lot of advice so many thanks to him!

Already have it ballraced

today came the batt packs and gearset (hope its the right gearset), batt packs werent the most expensive but will do me for a start in the meantime

Picture773Medium.jpg

also ordered,

alloy motor mount

alloy hex nut's

and new wheels and tires

looking out for some steel pinions now for the motor, then i'll try and start a rebuild, and get hold of an esc and uprated motor.

I'll maybe get a few diff sets fo tyres and some uprated springs/shocks too at some point

Be interested to see how you get on with those batteries. The pair the old man bought are worthless. The false peak on low charge rates and get hot easily on standard charge rates like 1C.

is it possible to get a rear alloy gear casing?????

I wish! And the top gear cover too would be wonderful. 3Racing do the rear diff cover, purely a bling item as this part never breaks.

I notced a split in the rear casing of mine last night  but found a new one on edrizzle for about 14. Its not all bad tho as i became the owner of a F.R.P Chassis Box & Manual this is a costly hobby to say the least  ive spent at least 400 already and my cars is nowhere near ready for the street!!!
