I have just bought the Chrome Special Pumpkin, to go along with my Lunchbox

The only problem, i do not like the chrome shell at all, and wanted a black one, which I could never find for a decent price.

Can the paint be removed from the shell just like any other ABS shell or is there something more tricky to it ?

Does anyone have a black shell they want to swap :)

Cheers

Chris

I think nail polish remover, chlorine bleach or caustic soda oven cleaner will take the chrome right off, but you might want to see if someone here wants to trade the shell.

Yeah i was thinking along the lines of oven cleaner stuff, thats how i have cleaned all my other ABS shells.

I would rather swap it if someone else was interested for sure

Bleach works brilliantly removing chrome from model kits. It just dissolves, and it's not as nasty as oven cleaner. Haven't tried it on the chrome on a pumpkin shell, but basically the chrome will likely be pretty fragile.

Mr Muscle takes off chrome in seconds. Don't ask me how I know this, but there is a story in Radek's showroom (rad22rad) which shows what happened (Ford Ranger).

It is caustic and doesn't damage the plastic at all.

Having said that, you want it black and from previous experience, you can paint on chrome plated plastics. I know this because I chromes some mesh wheels for the Group C cars and painted the gold central part on it and they came up reallyl nicely, no problems at all.

I disagree, unless it is for technical reasons. Midnight chrome shells are ten a penny on eBay right now, whilst the original ones are commanding much more money. I know, I have been after one (just a shell) for a couple of months and they are always going for way more than the chrome ones. Not sure why ;-)

I took the chrome off a set of King Hauler wheels using caustic oven cleaner. Only took a couple of minutes and the result was excellent (see my avatar to the left there). Very easy to clean up.

I discovered this when stripping a Ford Ranger body. I thought it would take off only the black paint which was badly done, but it stripped the whole grill in moments. Funny though, didn't strip the auto paint on the Ranger!

That was the only reason i bought one with the chrome shell, as I couldnt find any kits with the White shell at all.

At least it will be as easy to strip as my clod shell was.

I used Acetone on my Savage rims to strip the chrome off those, that worked quite well too, then dyed them black, came up a treat.

Now to decide should it be gloss or flat back for that great 50's theme, do the rims white, with some white sidewalls and all :P
