Was going to buy the Hornet kit next but saw the Plazma Edge Buggy and the Rising Storm and was thinking hmmm do i spend the extra cash (10 ish) and get a 4WD kit. I really wish that i did not look at Modelsport tonight as it makes my choice harder and harder. I thought i would ask you guys for advice as you have not let me down . I know i will end up owning the lot, but i do not want to buy one and think **** i should have bought the other and have to wait a month for the next choice. Maybe i should just write them all down on a bit of paper and close my eyes and stick a pin in the list :o

I do like the Hornet and the Plazma Edge but i was considering the Rising Storm. Maybe its the beer :D

the hornet is a a great model, fast and practically indestructible. The plasma edge is a DF-02 chassis 4wd and the rising storm is also the same just a different body style. I have a plasma edge myself that I like but if I had to make the decision over again id probably drop the extra 40 or so for a DF-03 like a dark impact or keen hawk better hopups out of the box and more gearing options for stepping up your game as you become more experienced.

I like fun though, Id just get a hornet or a frog keep it real and oldschool

Thanks for that but still having a bit of trouble deciding on which to get. It does not help that i have a very understanding girlfriend who says "get which ever you want to get" :D I am hoping my overtime this month enables me to get two kits (handset & everything) so we all can have a laugh and crash into each other. Will let you all know how it goes :o

the df02 is nice, needs hopups to be made fast - as it has been said the df03 is worth the extra. I have a gravel hound, and apart from the low ground clearance (plenty of cheap fixes for this) is good to drive, stable and predictable - you will crave more power. The hornet is hiliarious. i love mine dearly, though it is just plane useless at going quickly, even in a straght line, always puts a smile on your face. you dont need to through lots money at it to increase the fun factor - bearings are good on both cars. both are quite tough though the df02 has a bit of an annoying tendancy to break its chassis if you clip the rear wheel on something solid. the hornet is tough, somehow mine is broken, probably due to being original and brittle plastic, but held together with cable ties, which just adds to the character.dont expect either to win races, even with all the hop ups in the world, but the df02 will cope wiht more power if you want to go fast

I would get the rising storm - I think the body style is groovy :o - but since there isn't any difference other than shells, either DF-02 would do.

The DF-02 is great for bashing with an indestructible gearbox and can take a brushless system if you want to go that route later. It will certainly handle better and you can run it harder while keeping it on the wheels. 4wd buggies just rock!

I'm not bashing the Hornet and you should absolutely get one, but I would [and did, actually] buy the DF-02 before the Hornet.

Lets see if my GF can be more helpful, she's just walking behind me on her way to the kitchen, hang on............

............ok, so apparently Gothcat you should get the Plasma Edge because it is a pretty blue colour ....... or of course you could get the Hornet because it's like a buzzy bee.

Hope thats helped narrow it down.

Dont get a hornet, they are just not very good by todays standards, plus they look ugly (IMHO), they have no potential for bashing. The df-02's will be much more fun and give you more hop-up possibilities.

.. absolutely 100% do not buy a hornet! / grasshopper

DONT BUY A HORNET!!!

Having owned a DF-02 (Gravel Hound) and seen people bashing DF-03 based buggies, I would definitely recommend paying a bit more and getting a DF-03.

Much better out of the box (and the Avante Mk II is quite cheap)

I personally perfered the plasma edge body style to all the other DF-02 models since with the long nose it reminds me of some of the old beat up lincolns and oldsmobiles I used to drive as a teenager. I looks classy in a way. I do prefer an older look or something old look inspired kinda like the batmobile... Which actually isnt a bad idea I could probibly make my plasma edge look like a batmobile

heres how it looks now, I cant wait to get my ez brushless for this

plasma2.jpg

I actually plan on converting this to a super truggy and buying a DF-03 for buggy purposes

go with the DF-02

I thought from your forum name you were going to suggest getting the Hornet.....life is never predictable.

well in my previous post I did suggest the Hornet which Ironically Ive never had an original hornet, only the super hornet which I will argue is 10 times better than the original If you can get your hands on one do so. But I changed my mind for the OP because I see he has a Midnight pumpkin and that completely fills the requirement of "FUN".

SuperHornet i love the simple paint job as i find (IMHO) that some complex paint jobs with lots of decals can look a little over the top. I am thinking of a single colour and maybe two decals at the most :)

yeah I really thought the flames AND the checkered flag were way too much going on, Im pretty happy with the way it came out. If I did it again Id paint it deep metalic purple and throw the flames on

It has to be the Hornet!! If you want to test your driving skills with the back stepping out and the outright fun of trying to keep the Hornet under control it's a blast :) plus cheap on parts, low maintenance and you will be driving a Tamiya legend.

Which buggy you buy all depends on two things, your skill level and the purpose.

A Hornet is a beginner kit, easy to put together and indestructable. Out of my 5 Tamiya cars, it breaks down the least. If you want to buy it, build it, and bash it with the stock components, it is a great buy. If you are looking to modify the buggy for more performance and speed, then you are limited. You can add more powerful motors at the serious expense of handling, to the point that the Hornet becomes a rocket on wheels. I took my BZ 23T motor out of my Hornet because it was simply too hard to control and took a good bit of fun out of driving it (on road, at least).

The DF-02 is a great beginner/intermediate buggy. It is very simple to put together and maintain. It has much better handling and balance compared to a Hornet. The 4wd makes a huge difference offroad in terms of handling and traction. There are more motor/pinion/gearing options if you want more speed. There are also many aftermarket hop-ups available for suspension and strengthening of the chassis.

The DF-03 is a great intermediate/advanced buggy. It is much better than the other two. It does require some skill, and if you don't have that skill yet, it can be very challenging. I had some obstacles to overcome in terms of tuning the suspension to behave to my driving style. This kit is definitely a jump from the DF-02. Once you get over the learning curve on it, your choices for performance and speed are endless.

So, think through your skill level and how much modification you want to do, then pick your kit.

The hornet will put a smile on your face <_< , its the most fun of the 3 cars. it will not hold the track as well as the storm or edge but l am biast  as this was the car l grew up with and it was the car of the early 1980s. just have fun mate whatever you get! (GET THE HORNET)

I'm disappointed in you lot, really. He said his girlfriend was very understanding and he should get whatever he wants, right?

So why haven't one of you pointed out the obvious solution: buy yourself a DF-02 and buy HER the Hornet since she is obviously a keeper. That way you get to play with them both and your GF is pleased with you for thinking of her - and if by some chance she isn't that interested ... well, its the thought that counts, right?

RIGHT? ;)

Or ... alternate scenario - she likes the Hornet, but really wants to keep up with your {insert model here} then you can always buy her the 3rd one and everybody is happy. [and you end up with all 3 like you know you're going to anyway] Plus now, you've got someone to go bash with who is a lot better looking than us lot. :)

As the rising storm and plazma edge are the same car, it doesn't matter which you get as you can always get the bodyshell of the one you didn't buy when you fancy a change!

Have Tamiya really improved the Hornet that much? I certainly don't remember the original being indestructable, far from it. Also it was pants on any surface other than tarmac as the suspension just couldn't cope.

And finally, if you are looking at getting 2 kits for you both to have fun, then similar cars would be more fun imho, otherwise one of you will get bored if the car is slower/can'thandle the terrain as well as the other.

I do agree that the df03 is a better car than the DF02 but what you've said you want to do is it really worth another 40?

Posted

taliesin i love your idea :D

I think i may have to put that in to effect Or buy two and say one if for her, but she will have to practice on the old QD Lancer that i had given while i run the two new ones in

Its all dependant though on how much spare cash i have this payday and how much overtime i get ;) Although she said i should buy myself at least one kit or some upgrades every month, so yes she is a keeper and living so close to the moors (Baildon and Ilkley) provides and excellant place to drive my purchases

Option 4 - you buy the 2 cars and the boss is a bad a driver as mine and manages to break both cars causing you 2 weeks carless and quite a few quid lighter

My choice would be a more modern 4wd ( i like the df-03's) simply to get the better handling, suspension, drivetrain etc

Got to my local hobby shop and looked at the Plazma Edge Buggy and i was so close to buying it but then out of my mouth came the words LUNCHBOX please Do not know where it came from as i already have a Midnight Pumpkin and they drive pretty much alike. The only thing i can think of is having so much fun with one when i was alot younger. Still could not belive it when i sat in the car but when i looked on to the back seat and saw the box artwork a big smile  spread across my face. My other half wondered what on earth i was smiling at LOL. I bought some oil filled dampers to replace the original pogo sticks. Will post some pictures as soon as its built
