I don't know if it's been a topic at one stage or the other but last night when I sat listening to some Eric Clapton I started wondering what members on TC fancy music wise.

I am a big fan of Dire Straights, U2, Def Leppard, Metallica, AC/DC, DAD, The Cure, The Cult, Dokken, Cinderella, Nirvana, Bob Seger, Chris Isaak, A-ha, Chrissie Hind, Collective Soul, Crowded House, ELO, oh my, this list might get very long indeed. There are so many to list. I think Nickleback is one of the best rock bands to reach the charts in the last year or so. The Old school like Gary Moore, Motley Crew, Scorpions etc are also on my list.

I listen to most genre but the really Jazzy stuff and Opera can go fly. I will listen to Beethovens piano concerto's but don't invite me to a classic concert. O yes and being a Boertjie entitles me to listen to the Afrikaans music by Dozi (my cousin), Robbie wessels, Karen Zoid and many more. I hate R&B with a passion and if you wanna torture me to give vital info play James "Killing a Cat" Blunt. 5 Seconds flat and I will sing like a canary and give it all up as long as I don't have to listen to him being beatiful.

And just for the fun I would also like to have this question answered.... WHO IN YOU OPINION IS OR WAS THE GREATEST GUITARIST OF ALL TIME? :)

Was it Clapton, Vai, Hendrix, Knopfler, Satriani, Malmsteen, Slash...........come on add or chose!

Electro, hip hop (up to about 1991), dance, modern classical (& some old stuff, but can't stand baroque or most opera), some fluffy pop, ska & reggae, old skool r&b (not the modern pap), some rock (some goth), 40's big bands, a little country ... my tastes aren't eclectic ... they're schizoid :)

It's Metallica for me, saw them in Manchester last month. And thus Kirk Hammett is my favourite guitarist.... predictably.

I've never got Metallica. Why are they good? As far I can see they're just Metal-by-Numbers, churning out song after predictable song as a money making enterprise, rather than a band.

When I saw them at Reading back in 2003 I overheard a great conversation in the crowd. There was a bunch of 15 year oldish kids who were slagging off St Anger: "Oh man, Metallica have really sold out with this new album. It's sounds just like every other metal band around."

Then an older biker-type metaller was walking past, must have been around 30-35 years old. He said to the kids "Oh well, I remember when I was your age and Metallica sold out."

Absolutely hilarious.

"Why are they good?". Don't know. To me, they don't sound like other metal/thrash bands, but I'm not what you'd call a died in the wool metal head. The concert I went to prior to Metallica was Kylie! A lot of it has to do with the fact I've grown up with them, the Black Album came out just as I really got into rock. I like James' voice and Kirk can do a proper old school guitar solo as well as anyone on earth. Lars and Robert Trujillo are just hilarious to watch and good musicians also.

Oddly some of my favorite tracks are on their least well respected albums, such as load and re-load (Fuel is just epic in my opinion). These albums were accused of chasing the main stream with their sophisticated production, so maybe I'm not actually hard-core enough to like 'proper thrash'. So it seems it's the "sell-out" stuff I actually like. Not sure what that says about me. On the new album "All Nightmare Long" and "The Day that Never Comes" just seem to have something extra for me, again it is probably because they are a bit more produced. Even watching them in Some Kind of Monster just made me like them more.

Anyway, other bands I like are....

AC/DC

Beastie Boys

Foo Fighters

Green Day

And just about any track from Guitar Heroe

Some very valid stuff about Metallica.

I see what you're saying, but I just think there are loads of other bands that do it so much better. I don't get the hype about Metallica. Last year at Reading instead of watching them we went and had a Ska party at the Manchester Company of Extreme Largeness shop.

I think the way Lars manages the band is what annoys me most of all, that and their opposition to Napster etc. I worked a bit for Napster, and wore my staff T-Shirt to the their 2003 show with the intention of getting on the big screen wearing it. Not sure if I did or not, as I spent most of the show in the bar drinking and chatting to a very nice girl who also hated Metallica.

Your right about Lars, he is a bit full of his own importance at times, but after watching Some Kind of Monster it becomes apparent Metallica is very much his band, James has nearly as much input and Kirk, Robert are just along for the ride. The Napster thing was a PR disaster for them (Lars in particular), but I think they know it and have learnt from it. They must be doing something right to be the IIRC 7th biggest selling US act of all time.

For those wondering just what HBM and myself are disagreeing about, here's a few Youtube clips

Nothing Else Matters at Live Earth. Not the best vocal performance ever, but just sends shivers down my spine, the two dudes 3:57 some it up for me....

The video for Fuel, classic hetfield vocals at 2:40....

...but that's not a good thing! He runs it as a business, the music is just a way of making money for him. I really doubt he has the passion - if he wasn't making millions of dollars doing it I very much doubt he'd be keen to carry on.

To change the subject entirely, anyone else on Last.FM?

So heres the list:

Does anyone have any opinions on Megadeth ?

YES I did have two of their albums. Peace sells and Killing is my bussiness. Grew tired of it so moved on. Only track I still remember was Mary Jane. haven't met anyone else ever who was into their music here in SA.

Mostly anything electric will be in the stacker but any deep house (Fish Go Deep podcast is a regular) will be near the top. Streetlife DJ's a close second, and St Germain for some gallic goodness a close third.

Pretty much listen to anything else any given sunday, just depends what mood I'm in.

I´m also in Metal/Hard Rock/ Guitarists stuff.

I always preferred Megadeth to Metallica as they just had the more interesting guitar riffs and soli. Mustaine isn´t the best vocalist but it´s the complete package which makes Megadeth my favourite .. best era began with Rust in peace and ended with Youthanasia after Marty Friedman´s exit from the band ...

Metallica is more mainstream but they also set milestones like Master of puppets and Justice for all.

The black album was a real cash cow and the zenith of their ability, all following albums were poor and not worth mentioning ..... especially this ugly St. Anger ....

Naming the best guitarist will be impossible as there are too many styles and directions. I can name Satriani, Vai, Slash, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker ( one of the best and fastest guitarists who unluckily suffers from a bad disease ), John Petrucci, Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, Zakk Wylde, Nuno Bettencourt and Yngwie Malmsteen ( even when he´s always playing the same stuff ... ).

Bands i listen to

Dream Theater

Porcupine Tree

Pain of Salvation

**** the Machine

Killswitch engage

Opeth

Megadeth

Metallica

Audioslave

Paradise Lost

Anthrax

Pantera

Living Colour

Deep Purple

Led Zeppelin

Filter

Stone Temple Pilots

Pearl Jam

Van Halen
