Low-rider Sierra

Recommended Posts

Well I ordered a set of 1/10 drift wheels with the hope of trying my hand at 2wd drifting (which after looking into sounds near on impossible lol) but was abit upset to find that once they had turned up they where a little on the small side :)

The wheels and tyres on come upto the same size as the standard Sierra wheels!!!

So fitted them losened the suspenion off and look at that baby scrape the deck.... Couldnt use it like that unless it was in a indoor carpark or something as smooth but as she aint a running at the moment doesnt really matter. Out of interest anyone know where you could get slightly bigger tuner style wheels?

Your notice I removed the race decales as they looked abit dated and some where damaged, Im looking forward to getting her running and taking some pic's + vid's

But for now here's couple of pic's, enjoy

Your Sierra isn't a touring car, which are 190mm wide and uses those wheels, it's a buggy with a Sierra shell on it so you have to use buggy size wheels. The 4mm front axles means the only modern wheels that will fit on are Schumacher Fireblade 3 spoke wheels, but the rears have a 17mm hex so you'll have to replace that as well.

To fit a wider range of wheels on there you are going to have to convert the front end to hex drives. You can do this by replacing the whole assembly that attaches to the wishbones with either Ultima RB5 parts or Traxxas bandit parts Then you have a wider range of wheels available, such as the HPI Super size wheels and wheels for the Tamiya DF03 and TGR.

But there aren't any buggy size drift tyres. You will have to make your own using a piece of PVC waste pipe. A piece of pipe between 70 and 90mm diameter should be about right, but you will then have to use old tyres to go between the wheel and pipe to centre it on the wheel. If you want a quick experiment first before buying anything take the Sierra tyres and wrap PVC insulation tape around them, covering all the tread. It won't last too long on an abrasive surface but it will give you an idea of how the car will drift as they will have a bit more grip than proper drift tyres.

Well to be honest it probally wont ever get run with them smaller drift tyres, as it brings the bodywork down to low to be honest.

Would have liked to stick another body on it to run with but the clip mounting at the front and the extra width of the chassis is giving me a problem finding a shell wide enough but hey what ya gona do lol

Terry got me wondering what base car is underneath. I thought it was the same as the opel (uk; vauxhal) calibra = ultima?

But that does not line\up with 17mm hexes ibn the rear...

On the other hand : Can we have a look at the inside of the tires you ve on now? Aren't they all 12 mm hex already? I'm very confused.

The calibras wheels are 2.2 with wide offset and very lo-profile tires. They offer very little grip and could be good for limited drifting.

The base car is a Raider, so it's 2wd with bearings in the front wheels. http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.a...71&id=10546

Same wheel fitment as the Ultima, so to fit hex drive fronts means converting it to Ultima RB5 or Traxxas Bandit uprights.

Schumacher rear wheels use a 17mm hex, so to fit Schumacher Fireblade wheels means replacing the Kyosho 12mm hex with a Schumacher 17mm hex.

If you want an alternative body that fits at a reasonable price then you are really limited to the Parma Escort Cosworth

hey terry, since the calibra is based on the ultima the front wheels will go right on it without need for conversion.

(the VW golf uses the same wheels with different insets, and there's a couple more)

I think I have 2 pair front wheels at home still, but no inserts (never used them: only needed for looks and further only add rotating weight)

These tires are pretty hard, maybe if you don't glue them to the rim you get the drift tire effect. They are so hard you don't need foams in them and they won't jump of the rims with their low profile either LOL
