Hi all, newbie here, not to Tamiya but the forums!

I have a Blackfoot roller on its way to me, the X-treme version, and i was reading up on it as you do to gain an insight into its background etc, its my first truck and i came across this little gem on Wikipedia.

''Tamiya currently (2005) markets a completely updated model called the "Blackfoot Xtreme." The "Xtreme" has a totally different chassis design than previous versions, but retains the body of the King Blackfoot, just mildly modified with a hood scoop, a modernized grill and new decals. The BX is the final incarnation of the Blackfoot name. The "Xtreme" can even be modified for 4WD with the addition of a front gearbox and a second motor. As a matter of fact, Tamiya markets the 4WD "Wild Dagger", 4WD "Twin Detonator", and the 4WD "Double Blaze" all based on the same basic chassis as the "Xtreme".''

What i was wondering is if this is true or not?

I think this would be an awesome and relatively inexpensive mod to a great truck with a lot of history, and certainly increase is capability.

Thanks for any help and advice you can offer me.

The Blackfoot, Super Blackfoot and King Blackfoot have a completely different chassis. It's based on the ORV chassis (so it shares some chassis parts with the Frog and Monster Beetle for example). The Blackfoot Extreme is a chassis design shared with the Wild Dagger, Twin Detonator and some more cars. The difference on the BF Extreme is that it doesn't have a front gearbox like on the other cars, but you can add one. The gearbox design for front and rear is exactly the same and that means the other cars uses two motors for 4WD...

Yes it is correct, the Blackfoot Xtreme, Wild Dagger and Twin Detonator are all based on the WR-01 chassis, the Blackfoot Xtreme has a dummy transmissions at the front to make it only 2WD.

To convert a Blackfoot Xtreme to 4WD you need the following parts:

- WR01 assembled transmission, Tamiya Part number: 8085153.

- Blackfoot Xtreme Parts Bag A, Tamiya Part number: 9400076 or Drive cups (9805368)+ Dog Bones (9805551) + Stub axles (50823).

- The spare C11 bumper mount & C20 bumper (left over from the blackfoot xtreme build if you get them) or a C Parts Tree, Tamiya part number 0005688.

- Dual Motor ESC, Tamiya Part Number: 45037 or the cheaper MSC, tamiya Part Number: 4505174 (but I highly recommend the ESC.)

- Couple of 3mm O-rings.

You can see for yourself in the Tamiya exploded views of the Blackfoot Xtreme and the Twin Detonator how few pars are actual different.

Thanks guys, just the kind of responses i was looking for!

Taz, thanks for listing the parts for me, i am guessing its just a straight forward strip and rebuild with the new gearbox in place?

Yeah basically. Only thing I recommend doing while you've got the front transmission out is, unscrew the steering servo mounts and apply a good amount of loctite to the screw threads before re-installing them, I don't know what is about the WR01 chassis but the steering servo always seems to work itself loose, a little loctite will save to a bunch of hassle in the future. I'd almost go so far as to recommend a pair of aluminum servo mounts from the likes of yeah racing would be a good investment.
