I just bought a m03 Mini cooper , I was wondering what can be done as far as making the stock motor as good as it can be . ie: lubrication ? etc.

Also , what else should I be cleaning or lubricating on the chassis or motor ? Thanks.

Just a thought, replace the red and black wires with lower gauge wires (or is the other way around?) and don't use the standard Tamiya plug all for better current flow.

First upgrade should be to replace all the plastic bearings with ballraces. Gives an instant increase in speed, much more than working on a standard 540.

To get the best performance from a standard 540 you really need to bed in the bearings and brushes. To bed in the brushes you use a metal polishing compound or toothpaste (yes, really!) on the shaft against the bearing while spinning the armature for a few minutes with a Dremel. You then need to flush out the polish using motor cleaner and then relubricate the bearings using proper bushing oil. Trinity and Parma make good ones designed for the job.

The brushes are bedded in by running the motor while in water. Connect the motor to a battery pack while in a container of water. the water will go black very quickly. The motor only needs to be run under water for 15 - 30 seconds, any longer and you are just wearing away your brushes. When you remove the motor from the water flush out any water using motor cleaner and then reoil the bushings with bushing oil.

This advice is only really of use if you are racing in a clas of racing that limits you to the standard 540 motor, all this work will give you a good 540 motor, but there isn't a great performance increase from this.
