O.K so I have always said TAMiYA but since watching some of the original promotional videos, I have learnt that the correct way to say it is TAmeya, so how do you pronounce Kyosho, is it KEYoSHO, What do you say?

"Correct" pronunciation depends on what language you're saying it in - correct Engligh is to put equal eight on each of the three syllables - so tam-e-a.

Current American English puts the emphasis heavily on the second syllable and elongates it - so ta-MEE-a. Japanese puts no emphasis on the first and third syllables, and abbreviates the second to little more than a slight pause - tam'ya.

I brought this up in a thread a while back, but no-one was interested

It looks like it TA MEE YA but I have it on good authority it is actually pronounced "HOLY **** BATMAN, I SPENT HOW MUCH ON MY CREDIT CARD?!!".

Like most things linguistic its all in how you hold your tongue. As in - when your wife asks if you have spent any money on the Visa card lately that she should know about and you ... hold your tongue ... all the while thinking, "other than a new TA MEE YA kit or three, no...."

For the past 20-some odd years, I had called it Ta-My-Ya. That is until I actually called TamiyaUSA's customer service phone number and the answering message said Ta-Me-Ya. I was crushed. I felt like a boob until I realized that everyone else I had ever known has made the same mistake. Oh well, no big deal. Even after informing them, most of my friends still call it Ta-My-Ya...

As for Kyosho, I'm pretty sure the correct way to say it is Key-O-Sho. Though I did hear one person say Kai-Yo-Sho before. But that was only one isolated incident in 25 years...

I've seen all the threads over the years regarding the "correct" pronunciation of Tamiya, and it's clear to me that it depends on what language you're speaking and which country you're in. Most would agree that America and England are two countries divided by a common language - as similar as our languages are, it only takes a word like aluminum to reignite the debate, and don't even get me going on tomato.

Still, there are some words that I hadn't realized were at issue, like "Subaru". I've never heard this pronunciation before:

In the states we say Sooba Roo - three syllables, but "sooba" is all at once with the emphasis on an elongated Soo. In this video, it is Soo Bahru with the Bahru all at once and the emphasis on the Bah. Who knew? I wonder what the Japanese say, because this certainly sounds more correct and in keeping with the cadence and tone of Japanese, not that I'm any expert, but hey, I watch Anime and Japanese films. You get the point, this actually sounds right to me. Anyone from Japan or speak Japanese to confirm or clarify? Certainly the Subaru dealers in the US don't pronounce it that way, but then again we are the only people in the world who say the word coupe like "koop" while all my friends in Europe look at me like I'm daft when I say that, and reply, "oh, you mean Coopay".

Just to add fuel to the fire, this announcer is the same as usual and says Tommyuh. Just sayin'.

The first person I ever heard pronounce it was a hobby shop owner in Illinois with a fairly thick drawl; he said "tuh-MAA-yuh." I assumed he was right for years (though I should have known better). I have no idea how he pronounced Kyosho; he simply referred to them as "junk outta the box" and wouldn't stock them...
