Hi

The attached picture shows my yard, as you can see its a lovely cobbled effect

Ive posted a photo with bits of child and child stuff to give some perspective

I would like to revisit my youth and dabble in r/c cars

Naturally I have an affinity with Tamiya, although its been years

I would love a nice scale model, like a Countach or a recent 911 GT3

I have no illusions that the above would run either on the lawn or my yard so what would?

Ive looked at a Mini at the local hobby shop and the ground clearance seems modest at best

Would an Imprezza/GT-R be a better bet?

Id rather not have a truggy but if theres no alternative would consider

Many thanks in advance

David

I think you'd get frustrated very quickly with a saloon type car ... even one with rally pretensions. I recommend something with much greater ground clearance , and preferably, bit squishy tyres.

If you want a scale look, something like the Pajero comes to mind, if you want something similar but isn't going to roll constantly, how about the Subaru Brat?.

To be honest though - if in doubt ... buy a Lunchbox.

There's also the Midnight Pumpkin or the Wild Willy 2

If you want fun buy a lunchbox.

If you want capable, a DB01 or DF03 on that surface.

I'd sway to the lunchbox.

Thank you for the comments

Most of my problem is the wide range of models Tamiya actually make and the fact I often struggle to spot the differences

The DF-03RA Imprezza looks chunky enough to have the necessary ground clearance

But the newest Imprezza looks to be the TT-01 Type E chassis with a 2008 WRC shell which isnt nearly so robust and cobble friendly

Why are there 2 versions of the same car and how do these chassis differ please?

Its no wonder Im flummoxed

The DF-03RA seems the closest to what I want

Can anyone say for sure that it will run on grass please?

If it runs on the lawn Im hoping the cobbled yard would be OK

And Id be grateful for any hints on what else to consider

The Lunchbox looks a lot of fun but a bit primitive, which is fine

Call me a heretic but Traxxas do some nice looking truck things, but sadly they are all preassembled and lack the detail of the Tamiya scalers

I want something to build which actually looks like a car or van, and which must go like the clappers too

Thanks again in advance

And in the meantime Im off to Google LIPO and brushless again

Hi David

The DF-03RA shares the same underpinnings as some of the recent 4WD buggies so is pretty capable off road. Reading your post above I think it could be what you are looking for. For info, the TT-01 is a road going chassis and is really only suitable for smooth (or close to smooth) surfaces like tarmac.

There is an official Tamiya video on Youtube which should show you all you need to know about the DF-03RA:

Whatever you buy I'm sure you will love it! I too have got back into the hobby after many years and am enjoying every minute of it.

Jump back in and enjoy the water!

Cheers

Dont buy any of the old re releases (grasshopper / frog / brat etc) They are all very poor compared to the more modern buggy equivalents.

The df03ra sounds like it will be the best, if you didnt want scale then a df03 / db01 buggy would be great.

the Lunchbox is a cool tangent, lots of fun but is its a small yard you wont be able to steer it around very well.

F350 Highlift, Scale and would definately do the job with ease, may be a bit expensive if you just want to 'dabble' though.
