Hi everyone,

I've just put together a new Pumpkin, and am ready to order the motor/esc, was looking at the 9t 4300 Kv Ezrun setup as it seems really good value, but have found a Novak Havoc sport brushless system for not much more, looking at the 8.5t 5000Kv one... (more power = more fun!!) I was wondering if anyone had any opinions or experiance with these, they are a fair bit cheaper than the higher spec Novak systems, is there a good reason for this? Or are they simply a good value setup?

The truck is fully sorted in the hop up dept, full bearings, 3rd shock, oil dampers, strut... etc etc... just want to pick the right motor for it.

Its probably not going to see any major off road use (have a bashed up LB for that) if that makes any differnce in choice??

Cheers all,

Mike.

If you can get the Novak for not much more than an EZRun, then my choice would be the Novak every time. It's sensored so you have smoother, more accurate throttle control. You also have customer support so if there's a problem Novak can fix it, there's no help with the EZRun systems.

Well....... spose its getting on towards twice the price, think from the US on ebay they're about $140 with postage. I'm happy to pay that as they're a little more power, plus with all the other advantages you guys have said.

Thanks again for the advice.

Tamiya now has a sensorless system as well. I think they go for $119 with 12T motor. It's a 100a ESC which should blow the ezrun 35A ESC out of the water. The novak Havok system is still gonna be better with hotter motor options too. Novak has been doing brushless since the beginning, an their stuff is very good. I have a GTB/Velocity 7.5R combo and it's pretty insane...

One thing to also consider is the gearing of the Pumpkin. I don't have experience with this chassis, but you will need to fit a small enough pinion for a high kv brushless or the motor will burn up. Pumpkin may have enough gearing options, but I'm not sure.

If your looking at Novak and Tamiya price range then you could also take a look at Castle Creations Sidewinder. I love my 4600 and it is very smooth at low speeds and a rocket at full throttle. The ESC is very powerful and does not need or have a fan.

Lunchbox/Pumpkin have no gearing options. The long brass 10T kit pinion is the lowest you will get it. Ratio is fine for 5700Kv MambaMax brushless with neither motor or ESC getting hot.

The initial take-off is the only place where sensorless systems like the Sidewinder and Mamba show a disadvantage. Once the motor is spinning there is no difference, it senses where the rotor is positioned from the 3rd wire. Sensored systems know where the rotor is positioned even with the motor is not rotating, hence why they take-off better from a dead stop.

You won't see much difference between a Sidewinder and Mamba ESC in a VLB/Pumpkin as you never get to pull full throttle (both use the same CM36s motors). Instant full throttle is a standing backflip with either system.

Sidewinder 5700Kv would be my pick of brushless system if on a budget for Pumpkin.

Excuse my inexperiance here.... (this is my first brushless venture after all!). What happens then moving off from stand still? Will the car stutter at all?

Also, will the drive train in the Pumpkin handle the 5700Kv ok? The sidewinder does look like an excellent value system and is very tempting...
