Hi , I have a DB-01 Baldre all stock with an ansman 2600 nicad battery and acoms techniplus, I want to go brushless and have been looking at the following:

Losi 1/10 Xcelorin S 4.5T Brushless Combo click me

Traxxas Velineon VXL-3s Brushless Power System click me

obviously I will need a slipper clutch, peak charger and some good NiMH batteries, but I was wondering what people think of teh above brushless systems, I am gong for max power, but I am not sure if I will need anything else like connectors, gear ratios etc etc. I also need a new spur gear as the stock one got gravel in it which chipped some of the teeth, do they make these in aluminium?

any help greatly appreciated I am not new to RC but new to brushless having just got back into things after 10 years

I would recommend one of the kits from Novak over the Xcelorin and Velineon kits. The new Novak Ballistic motors are the best I have ever used, and the timing can be adjusted which is 'very' rare for a brushless motor. Novak is also "very" specific about their gear ratio information, so it is very easy to target the best gearing for whichever motor you get.. If you need assistance with gearing, I will be happy to help..

A 4.5 turn is "tremendously" fast. If you plan to race, then you may want to top out with a 6.5 for 4WD MOD.

I would avoid NiMH batteries at this point.. Lipo is so much more efficient for fast motors. You can charge them as often as you like with no 'memory' effect and they are way lighter.. I have been using the same 3800mah 30C Lipo for the past year and it is just as powerful as the first day I bought it :)

You won't need an aluminum spur gear for a fast motor.. The stock spur is great and the DB-01 is fully compatible with Team Associated Kimbrough spur gears. The main trick is to gap the gearing when you mesh the pinion to the spur.. The easiest way is to run a small piece of paper inbetween the gears while you tighten down the screws.

Please feel free to contact me if you need any additional information.

Aluminium gears wear at about 10 times the rate of plastic gears. If your car has any alloy gears in it replace them with plastic or better is hardened steel.

Another option for systems is Castle Creations. MambaMax 5700Kv is ideal for bashing (motor is not ROARS legal for racing). There are faster motors for the Mamba but I don't recommend them for cars with buggy sized wheels, better suited to tourers. The ESC plugs to the PC and you can set every setting imaginable with the click of a mouse including the motor timing. There's a link on the page where you can see the Castle Link software screenshots. Easily get 70km/h out of this system in a DB01 on 2s Li-Po and crazy fast on 3s Li-Po.

If you want to race look at Novak or Tekin 'legal' systems.

I agree with dimblum. Forget Ni-MH. Heavy, low amperage packs compared to Li-Po.

Thanks for the replies I like the look of the Novak Ballistic motors and have seen them on towerhobbies.com for a good price (not sure whether they are good to buy from though) however I am not sure what ESC I need with the motor, is it possible for someone recommend an ESC, lipo battery and lipo charger and a good place (us or uk) to buy the lot from? I am kicking myself as I have just come back from california and could have probably got everything I needed San Francisco?

a mate of mine uses the Xcelorin 4.5 set in his DB01 but it's a bit to fast sometimes. I agree on the Mamba 5700kv, that would be nice. If you want to go for Novak look at a GTB esc with a nice motor lika a 6.5 or so. I personally do not like Novak and actually almost all the guys at the NBK (dutch/belgian championship) race have a LRP/Nosram set with the Sphere TC esc.

rcplanet has those sets for not that much money :D

Do you have a budget?

Most people here like the Castel Creations stuff, seems pretty reliable, also people go for EZrun brushless stuff. If your going for Race spec then LRP TC spec 2007 or new 2009 is a good breed as is Speed Passion GTB Pro 2.0. If you want to run Mod for off road I would not go below 6.5 from what I hear any lower you cant get the power down. If your into Touring car then 2.5 is used but be aware its very fast indeed not for the basher really. If you want to go stock (10.5 turn and above) there are some very good "stock spec" speedos just hit the market, both LRP and Nosram have offerings - SSX, these advance the timing on the fly so the longer you keep your thumb/finger on the throttle the more the motor is advanced for you.

Good Luck

I have a DB01 Durga that's currently powered by the 4-pole Traxxas Velineon System... it's quite a bit of power. Over time I have learned how to properly adjust the car to behave and not destroy itself. I run with 21T pinion, 87T or 91T spur, and 7.2V or 11.1V battery. Regardless of the battery/spur configuration, I find myself running the car in Training Mode (50% power) a lot of the time. This car is also currently equipped with an Exceed transmitter & 4Ch waterproof receiver that came from a 1/8 Mad Torque.

Additionally, this car has the following Tamiya hop-ups: front one-way, single slipper, one-piece pulley, "Blue" motor mount, aluminum dampers, and high-traction arms (front & rear).

I also recently installed ceramic balls in the rear diff. Most say that this isn't necessary and that its not worth the cost. But being that I am still relatively new at maintaining this highly adjustable DB01, I opted to use ceramic balls since they will give me a little extra leeway if I didn't properly adjust (tighten) my rear diff. And prior to installing the ceramic balls, I coated the diff pulley with a semi-dry film of silicone, which should improve the wear & heat resistance of the plastic pulleys ball-contact surfaces. I wanted to use a PTFE/Teflon film, but I had the silicon film on-hand.

Oh yeah, the Traxxas VXL ESC+fan is quite large, so I had to cut out a portion from the body's rear driver-side for clearance and to have the fan to protrude into the ambient environment.

All this **** for bashing!!! When I bought this car used from Ebay for $100, it had about half of these hop-ups. I was excited about getting this race-worthy DB01; but in hindsight I realize that a DF03 would have been more than sufficient.

I will post pics of my DB01 shortly.

It would be better to look at hobbyking, the 120amp X-car sensored esc is only £24.38

http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__28377__Hobbyking_174_X_Car_120A_Brushless_Car_ESC_sensored_sensorless_.html

6.5 turnigy motor £21.69

http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__21961__Turnigy_TrackStar_6_5T_Sensored_Brushless_Motor_5485KV_ROAR_approved_.html

I raced a DB01R for 5 years at regional level before moved on to a TRF502x, a 6.5 is optimum for a 4wd.
