Alistair, don't loose any sleep over it :-) People kept saying that the original moulds for the suspension arms, gear box were not owned by Tamiya and this is why SRB re-release would be improbable. Today were in the improbable.. I'm sure a company as large as Tamiya keeps it's original moulds intact..

It's all encouraging news so far so I'm trying not to get too down about it! I just would love to see a re-release just about the same as the original, same as with the Buggy Champ. The original body style was very important for me, I have an emotional attachment to the Sand Scorcher since it was the first radio controlled car that I ever remember seeing an advert for and wanting, when I was about 7 years old. That Sand Scorcher UK advert with RIKO has been my desktop wallpaper for a very long time now! The only thing that I never really liked about the SS was the boxart where the wings aren't the ones on the model and about it having the front cage and etc.

Fortunately I was able to re-acquire the RR and SS full page full colour UK adverts a few years back from old magazines since my originals got thrown out by my Mum! I'm very grateful to have them back. So cool!

Cheers,

Alistair G.

Now as the Rough Rider surprisingly is rereleased , I am sure we will see the Sand Scorcher produced again too within a couple of years. In the meanwhile I have a feeling the Super Champ will be the next ("SRB") in the line. A lot of the parts are similar to the RR/BC, wheels/tires are allready there from the rere Hornet etc. Maybe it will be named the Super Buggy Champ ?

I'm pleased that the Rough rider has been re-released as the Buggy Champ, and I'm going to be VERY intersted when the Sand Scorcher is re-released, AND I will sell my soul for a F-150 if it's re-released... I wanted one back in the '80's but they had stopped production a bit before.... I bought a Opal Ascona ... But I wanted that Ford....... Waiting with baited breath here....

My 2c on the subject for what it's worth........

I think it's pretty much a no-brainer that the SS will be released @ some point in the near future, providing the sales figures stack up with the newly released BC. You'll all agree there's been a huge amount of interest in the short period it has been released and it will do well. Just look at some of the online stores.....selling out of their initial stock and having to re-order already, that's gotta be good news for Tamiya and the old SRB's.

I'm sure Tamiya well and truly know the popularity of the SS and that it's more than likely IMHO going to be their most popular re-release model (given the opportunity) yet. In the current economic climate $$$ talks so why would they not release it?????

I have to admit, that it would make perfect sense for Tamiya Inc. to release the Scorcher. I, as a collector, am torn between for and against. Part of me wants a runner, but the other part wants the SS to hold its value. My 2 cents.

I've only been in back to this hobby for about a year but I think its a safe bet that the Scorcher will come, and I think it will have been planned all along. Its a very good marketing plan by Tamiya. If you look at it from a marketing point of view. They certainly had the excuse to re-re the Rough Rider and it was a good choice for the first one. It was after all originally the first of the SRBs and we are after all in the 30th annevirsary of that model. They re-re the Rider and we all rush out to buy one out of pure amazement that its here at all, and that we just cant take the chance that the Scorcher wont follow. Someone else has previously pointed out in another thread that Tamiya have a habbit of releasing two models of each re-re (e.g Hotshot Boomerang, Frog Brat, Grasshopper Hornet etc). We all know (and Tamiya certainly know it too) that the Scorcher is the one that most people really want. The only thing is, from a marketing point of view I think they will make us wait a while for it, just to make sure we all pile of the Buggy Champ train first. Like me :D though personnaly I want the Ranger to be the one, but I have to conceed that I may be disapointed. I can only hope that the massive following for the SRB motivates Tamiya to break the re-re x2 rule and let them all have a second lease of life :)

30th anniversary of the Sand Scorcher is in December, peoples...

Yeah, and the Rough Rider is in November, and by that you ment?

Why would Tamiya re-re the Sand Scorcher at this moment?

Why wouldn't thet try to squees every penny out of Buggy Champ?

If they would re-re any srb, wouldn't the Super Champ be a better choise?

If they would re-re the SS now/this year they would KILL the BC on the spot and loose money on that kit.

I can't see any reason to re-re the SS this year/now, maybe the SC but not the SS...

I wonder if that desire is mostly TC members though  . How many can we buy ?

I thought it rather obvious? It'd be rather poetic if they re-released the kit 30 years to the month from the original kit.

Why would Tamiya re-re the Sand Scorcher at this moment?

Why wouldn't they? They'd still sell a ton. Right before Christmas, too.

Why wouldn't thet try to squees every penny out of Buggy Champ?

Sales of the Buggy Champ will tail off throughout this year anyway, as the 'collectors' all get their SRB fix. There would be a Christmas resurgence in sales towards November, but what better way to make some more money out of the chassis by re-issuing the same chassis with an even more popular body shell in December?

If they would re-re any srb, wouldn't the Super Champ be a better choise?

Was the Fire Dragon a better choice than the Thunder Shot than the Terra Scorcher? The Super Champ is probably the least loved of the SRB group, I don't think it would sell anywhere near as well.

If they would re-re the SS now/this year they would KILL the BC on the spot and loose money on that kit.

I don't believe that for a second.

I think the fact that the Buggy Champ is currently selling out so fast online as soon as someone has stock says otherwise. I think Tamiya will make their money back on this kit before too long, if they haven't already. The Rough Rider/Buggy Champ has its own following. If the Sand Scorcher was re-released, sales of the Buggy Champ would drop certainly, but overall Tamiya would probably sell more kits overall based on this chassis.

Considering the chassis for the Scorcher would be identical, and there's no costs to get the chassis back into production, costs to do the Scorcher now are relatively low, for the extra kit sales it would generate. Tamiya just have to get the body shell back into production. Nobody really knows the cost of doing this other than Tamiya. There doesn't seem to have been any trouble re-producing other body shells. They might be able to produce Scorcher bodykits tomorrow.

They've done the right thing so far from a marketing strategy perspective - release the Buggy Champ now to get people buying it, then release the Sand Scorcher to get those people spending money all over again.

I can't see any reason to re-re the SS this year/now, maybe the SC but not the SS...

I can. They'd sell a ton.

I am not saying that anything is certain, I just would not be surprised in the least if it did happen, just like I wasn't hugely surprised when the Buggy Champ was announced.

It's highly possible that the Buggy Champ is 'it', and there won't be any more SRB re-releases. But I would say the fate of the Sand Scorcher depends on how well the Buggy Champs sells. If it does well enough, Tamiya are going to SERIOUSLY consider re-doing the Sand Scorcher.

How long was it between the release of the Frog and the Brat?

How about the Hotshot and the Boomerang?

The F350 and the Hilux?

I dare say if it was to happen it would be similar to these.

Just an observation, but if Tamiya intended to (or were able to) re reissue the Beetle body on a chassis, why didn't they do it during the ORV series (as in Monster Beetle, Brat, Frog etc) ? That series of re issued chassis has been out for years, yet not a peep about a Beetle body on it.

You will also notice Tamiya have (as predicted by some) changed many of the metal parts for the Rough Rider/Buggy Champ SRB re issue. Of course we can't be 100% sure that this is because of the loss of the moulds, perhaps they were just improving the engineering, after all they periodically updated the metal parts on the SRB series of cars to strenghten and accept slightly larger motors.
