Ive just been reading some of the past posts about glueing tyres and im baffled.by CA and CYANO are we talking cyano acrylate(sp?) and is that actually superglue? or am i best off going to my lhs and asking for what i need?

cheers

Superglue is CA glue, yes.

And knotty is as thick as a brick :) Thanks for that butler.Next question is, am i better off glueing the tyres on.its for a landrover project and i`m putting XC/CC tyres(toureg anyway) onto some touring rims i have?whats the tamiya club consensus on glueing tyres in general?

once again cheers

You can try running without glueing them on. If you notice the rim slipping in the tyre you will need to glue them. All of my cars with XC tyres needed to be glued. Only tyres from Tamiya I've not needed to glue are the 2.16" Spire Spikes and 2.16" Square Spikes from the Top Force or Super Astute.

Somebody came up with an alternative a little while ago - put some glue around the wheel and then dunk it in some sand - then the tyre grips the wheel better. Might be worth a try...

LOL, I just tried this on my mini wheels, actually works quite well....not sure I put enough glue on, but it defo goes tacky when hot, I squeezed them while they were hot to get the glue in properly, and then launched them into the freezer....cool..(literally)

Now all we need is an easy way to do the F1 & sponge tires.... :)

Nitel Graffix came up with a great idea for foam tyres,it`s a very thin double sided tape, you put the tape on the rim and then spray the Nitel solvent onto the tape,it gives good time to move the tyre around before it sets and is real easy to peal off for the next tyres.

I believe Mardave were stocking the tyre fitting kits.

If you can`t find them ,PM me and i will sort some out for ya,takes all the hassle out of fitting foam boots,i even use the taping system for my HPi Baja 5 inserts,it works a treat.

PS,

Knotty,be carefull with CA,might be worth wearing some goggles [not joking] when you let the tyre go back into the rim, beware the glue splashing out.

Stick to the standard tire glue from your LHS.. Make sure to get either "Medium" or "Thick" CA.. The "Thin" CA dries too fast and is much harder to work with.

Most good tire glues include a small thin tube that you can insert into the tip making it much easier for gluing inside the rim..

- fully fit the tire with its sponge inserts onto your wheels first. Make sure the sponge is positioned well and that the tire seats onto the rim perfectly.

- Pull the tire wall up and run the glue beads onto the inner most lip of the tire and allow it to seat back onto the rim.. The medium and thick CA glue will dry more slowly, so you can quickly correct a mistake if that section of the tire does not seat onto the wheel.

- Make sure to run the glue around the -entire tire-. Spot gluing is a bad idea.. your tires will break free of the bond if you spot glue and you will find yourself re-gluing.

- Tire gluing bands or rubber bands can be used to keep the tire firmly compressed against the wheel while the glue dries.

- Once the inner bond dries, pull the tire walls back again and lay a second bead right under the outer lip of the wheel (where the tire touches). Keep the bead fine so that the glue does not run over the lip of the wheel.

This type of tire gluing will fully seal the wheel and you will not have to worry about it breaking loose or becoming warped. I use this method for racing and have never had any problems with my tires once they are set.

Hope this helps.

I just use normal bog standard super glue, either bostik or other...works a treat, try not getting on the outside of the tyre cos it goes shiny! Excellent and cheap though

use Acetone or finger nail polish remover to remove excess super glue. Don't get it into contact with plastic wheels, acetone will simply melt it away. Also, do in well ventilated area.

For foam tyres, and I've been doing it like this from the mini yonku days, use thin double sided tape from bookstore. Round it on the rim, but do not remove the slippery backing. Peel the non-sticky edge a bit to a side you can reach once the tyre is on, slip on the tyre, and pull the non-sticky backing out. run hand around wheel/tyre to make sure the adhesion is uniform. When it's time for removal, simply slit the foam tyre open, and peel off the tape. Clean glue with wd-40 or similar, and then wipe clean with alcohol or shellac.

Works better than trying to glue and missing a spot. and as per usual, let sit 24hr before running, so it's wise to do the tyres first.
