Tamiya have realy lost the plot as regards to how to make an RC Buggy

I've just seen their latest offering the BAJA KING (58301) and its a right abortion, its a cheaper entry level 4WD Buggy based on the Baja Champ, the chassis (TL-01B) is very similar to that of the Baja Champ and is again based on its popular Touring/sports car chassis but the body for the King is horendous :)

its a full lexan shell that has a mock pipe frame section at the front and it has exhaust bulges in each side of the cockpit ontop of the side panniers, and its painted in a gaudy yellow, black and silver with dayglow splash decals.

They can do better than this? we all know they can, its just they have gotten too lazy when it comes to designing Buggys cos they are no-longer "in Fashion" and instead make them llok outlandish to appeal to kids who just want a flashy car that goes over dirt. they would never be this careless with the design and detailing if they was designing a Supercar like a Ferrari or a Porche or even a Rally or Touring car so why do they make their buggys look so deformed and unrealistic, they even have the cheek to say its inspired by REAL cars that are used in the BAJA races held in califoria every year? I dont think so :(

I'm sorry for the ranting, and I should be grateful that Tamiya has made a new buggy seeing as they rarely bring new ones out anymore, but does it really have to look like this? :(

Yes, I have noticed the baja king as well. I knew right off it would be a remake of the baja champ. Oh well. Actually the shape of the body is alright, but the fake roll cage decal scheme makes it look as cheap as it is.

But who will be buying one for their collection. After all its so ugly no one will want one, so not many will be sold. This means a NIB example could be worth a fortune (eventually!!!)[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

Tamiya maintains their tradition of occasionally producing rubbish - see Striker, Sonic Fighter, etc, etc.

Yes but the sonic fighter came with oil filled shocks, so this is actually a feat by itself - they actually made something worse than the sonic fighter!!!!

Baja King.. HAH! Useless pile of junk is more like it.

I'd rather that they didn't make a buggy than release this useless kit.

Oh god! I feel so manly all of a sudden - the Fighter Buggy was my first car!

Even I say: "They don't make them like they used to", and I am not an old man! [:o]

They must have lost all the drawings from the HotShot, Avante and Top-Force!

Most probably... If they're so badly out of ideas, why not produce affordable versions of their old 'legendary' buggies...

Example: "Avante 2003", all plastic, plastic oil-filled shocks, etc.

"TopForce 2k3", all plastic, alloy oil-shocks & full BBset...

Sounds great, doesn't it?[;)]

How's about the Kingshot ??

3kg plastic tub chassis, friction dampers, drive shafts that fall out, peeling decals, guaranteed radio interefence and an ability to much through cells !

[:D]

LOL that sounds like an apt description of a MARUI buggy :(

but seriously I think you may hav stumbled on something there, Tamiya have used the KING tag on a couple of its cars now, but I think if used in combination with previous names it could open up a number on interesting naming possabillities like for intance...

Sand KING

Scorcher KING

Buggy KING

Ranger KING

Blazing KING

Super KING (not that one cos it sounds too much like a Packet of cigarettes)

Champ KING

Wild KING

Sabre KING

Thunder KING

Sonic KING

Dragon KING

Terra KING

Bush KING

Devil KING

Storm KING

Blitzer KING

Fighter KING

I know some of them are a bit naff, but then you know Tamiya go for crazy sounding names like this, but this is just a few Ideas :)

What happened to the old Tamiya Buggies, I mean the Egress and Avante were cutting edge in their day, and the best looking buggy in my mind taking into account modern/retro has to be the Top Force it looked way cool. So why doesn't Tamiya just reissue them. I know they have issued a Neo Top Force but it looks way ugly, also the Dirt Thrasher was a nice looking piece of kit too. I'm sure the TA04 would make a better starting point for a performance buggy rather than the TL01. All it need is a protective top cover.[:D]

Thanx

I happened to see a BAJA KING kit in the flesh today, my LHS has just got them in stock, the box cover art actually looks half decent, but the car itself is a real mess up, they might has well simple painted the Baja Champ yellow and black, it would look much better.

But the way they did it, you'll need to buy 4 different paint cans!! [8)]

(sorta like "planned obselescence" idea)
