Just got my Wild Willy 2 out of storgage (off the shelf). Bought it a few years ago but never ran it. I have charged the battery up and checked everything out.

When i switch the controller and the model on the rear wheels seem to move of their own accord, moving forwards or backwards without me touching the controller. I don't really want to test it inside/outside as i'm worried it will end up smashing into something.

Any ideas what the problem could be? ;)

Here in sweden we go a spray called 556, witch is for cleaning electronix.

Try that on all electronic parts (not the batt). But on servo conectors, reciever con, battery con etc...

It could be oxidation everywhere!!!

I would try that first...

Hope this will help.

Cheers

Does it have a MSC, because MSCs are notorious for this behaviour? I would try cleaning and adjusting the MSC to see if it is working properly. [and then throw it away so you can replace it with an ESC]

I had a Hummer that did this and I never did figure out why the MSC didn't work right. Everything looked OK but it just wouldn't stop running no matter what I did - the wheels would turn like mad. I was too afraid to drive it so I threw the MSC in the trash and used a TEU-101 and it has never done it again.

Thanks for the replies guys..

I feel stupid to ask but i'll ask anyway, how do i tell if it has an MSC?

That's an MSC - Mechanical speed controller. The on/off switch determines wether power is getting to the reciever & servos, not the speed controller, which is crude, and ... mechanical ;) By that I mean that it'll provide power to the motor (assuming a battery is connected) regardless of where the on/off switch is set.

Chock the chassis up on the bench with the rear wheels clear, connect the battery, switch on the transmitter & then the car on/off switch - the bit you need to adjust is the trim control to the side of the throttle stick on the transmitter - you should be able to tweak it to a position where the speed control arm returns to the neutral position when the transmitter throttle stick does.

Your MSC looks pretty clean, but as been said, lubrication will help. An ESC is a better bet - more control, longer run times & so on. Pretty much all Tamiya kits now come with a Tamiya TEU-101BK ESC which is a straight swap, you should be able to find a new one including postage for £20 or so.

that is a MSC (mechanical speed controller) it works like a scalextric trigger decresing resistence to increase speed, there very touchy and sensitive an prone to go AWOL. An ESC (Electronic speed controller) is cheap for a stock Tamiya one that will run a stock motor works 100% better.

Thanks for the link. I'll get one of those. Are the easy to fit?

Update.

Finally bought an ESC and got round to fitting it last night.

Followed the instructions and the LED light is supposed to stop flashing once you have set full forward and full reverse from the transmitter. Unfortunately my led light keeps flashing and when I connect the ESC to the motor and test I have got no forward or reverse.

Any ideas??

Ozzie Owl,

Here's a link to the Wild Willy 2 manual - have a look at stage 15:

Usually ESC's come with their own instructions to set them up.......

Enjoy,
