I've got my new tamiya purchase down to two chassis, either a classic Opel Calibra running on the TA-05 chassis, or a Merc running on the TT-01 chassis.

I'm looking for facts and opinions which may help me choose which chassis is best and why?

Cheers

Really depends upon what you want to do with it.. Racing? You'd probably want to go with the TA'5. (Assuming you weren't referring to the TA02 you put in the thread title) It's fully adjustable and very competitive in it's hopped up forms.

If it's just parking lot bashing that you're planning on, you'd be better off with the TT01. Cheap to repair and plenty of hop-ups out there to keep things interesting. Both chassis are identical in wheelbase, so the sky is the limit in regards of body choice!

Racing = TA-05

Belt driven is great for racing, much better quality, more adjustable, lighter, faster, better parts, better period. You get a lot of car for the money and its a rock solid choice. Not great in dirty conditions where sticks and stones can destroy the belts, but on clean parking lots or carpet it rocks!

Bashing = TT-01

Especially in dirty parking lots b/c its shaft driven, durable, great for drifting or whatever, inexpensive, lots of hop-ups - but be careful you don't exceed the price of the car w/ add ons b/c it will still only be a TT-01 and will get clobbered in a race w/ a TA-05 no matter how much you upgrade it. Lots of cool bling if that's your style. Good basic car that is much maligned - the trick is to remember what it is - don't spend $500 on a $150 car because its still a $150 car.

Personally, I don't race and I get a lot of use from the TT-01. Its just a fun basic car to go parking lot bashing with. I paid $109 NIB with a finished body and ESC. Added aluminum prop shaft & heat sink, sport tuned motor, full bearings and some oil shocks and have gotten every last penny's worth out of it. Still going strong. Gone through about 7 or 8 full sets of tires and one spur/pinion gear in about 3 years of heavy use. Pretty solid I think.

Thanks guys!

I'm actually looking at a NIB Calibra TA02 and a new Merc TT01, so it's between those.

I'm a big vauxhall/opel fan so I really want the Calibra body, but the kit is £175 because its rare and NIB, and the TT01 is only £100.

The price is only because of the body, and honestly I think you'd be better off sourcing a seperate Calibra bodyset and buying a TA02 release that has less value because of the body... :unsure: Both the TT01 and TA02 chassis' in a run but good condition sell for only a few tenners on the bay if they haven't got a valueable body on :lol:

Yeah your right! It is expensive.

TBH my head is completely fryed thinking about what to buy. I've some money saved for something, but for £175 I can have a grasshopper and a lunchbox with another radio gear!

If its just the body you are wanting buy the TT-01 and get several body/decal/wheel sets and change it up on demand. The TT-01 is much cheaper and parts are, well, cheap and plentiful to say the least. It is a very practical model to run, especially if you aren't competing.

I saw an beautiful Calibra body and wheel set on ebay a few days ago; not sure if it is still there or not, but they can be had. In the meanwhile, you can have something and be driving it while sourcing the Opel body.

theyre fairly similar performing vehicles.

tbh, there is no reason not to use a TA02 as a runner. you can get any part you need pretty easily on ebay.

the gearbox's etc are still used in current production models. most hop ups are pretty easy to get still except for the frp chassis.

if you plan to run the model a lot, i think eventually its pretty normal to get bored of a TT01. its definitely an entry level chassis. it can do the job and be fun to actually drive. but to work on and maintain, you will eventually feel like youre playing with a "toy".

the TA is a bit different. although it is fairly basic. at the time it was a fairly serious model, and also kind of where the whole "touring car" thing started. just a more significant model.

Only last week I bought a tt01 subaru impreza kit for £69 from Barnstormers. Bought it for my lad to learn with and to take to the local indoor club. For £69 it's a bargain and with some hop ups it will still be cheap enough.
