Hi,

Can someone who has used the 3M / Scotch brand tapes to mask an actual Sand Scorcher shell with success please tell me which is the best one for masking the Sand Scorcher shell with?

For example Scotch # 218 ( 3M 06300 , also seen it being called # 6520 ) is Fine Line Masking tape ;-

http://www.shop3m.com/70006043973.html

...is available in 1/8" width ( 3mm approx. ).

It is a Green coloured tape, so it says in the description.

...and that is the ONLY one of 3mm wide that 3M actually has categorised and named as a masking tape.

However there is one Caveat. It is shown here ;-

http://www.shop3m.com/3m-scotch-fine-line-...s5m0n94tlp.html

It says that it "Should not be subjected to outdoor exposure or prolonged periods of sunlight as tape may become difficult to remove" ;) and I would be painting outdoors I think, when it gets warmer and sunnier, so this tape might leave residue behind, it seems.

Doesn't sound good to me...

There is another tape which is mentioned above in this topic, the "blue" one, which is 3M 06404 / Scotch 471 , shown here ;-

http://www.shop3m.com/70016033568.html

...but this one is NOT shown in the 3M web site under the Masking Tape category and NOT named as a Masking Tape.

The main page for #471 is shown here ;-

http://www.shop3m.com/3m-vinyl-tape-471-blue.html

Note that there is a " 471 + " tape as well, shown here ;-

http://www.shop3m.com/70006448156.html

The main page for #471+ is shown here ;-

http://www.shop3m.com/3m-vinyl-tape-471-plus-923gl7dqsd.html

...but that one is colored " Indigo ".

I have never used any of these Scotch tapes (except # 207 but that was for Theatre Organ recordings from Sforzando on Open Reel tape decks  ) so I need a some guidance on this one.

Cheers,

Alistair G.

I was just going to get blue 3m 3mm tape i found on ebay and hope for best really, its sold on a ebay shope for air brushiing etc so would hope its paint masking tape of some sort!

This is title of listing on ebay im getting :- "3M 471 BLUE FINE LINE MASKING TAPE 3mm x 33m"

Found 3m pdf on its go down to page 18 and see 417 seems ideal for our use to me.

3m 471

or maybe the '218' is better it says "low tack adhesion" and for the '417' says "no adhesion transfer" so which one is less likely to pull off paint one has already applied?

Too bad on that finished model there is not tire lettering.

Also, was wondering... It's very shiny. Do you think they painted the clear lacquer over the decals? Does that even work?

Looking forward to getting mine!

Cheers,

Skottoman

Every one of Rad's showcase models is clear coated over the decals. It does work and if done properly, rubbed down, painted nicely etc, gives a smooth and showroom finish.

Hi Guys,

Quick build update.

This morning I wet flatted the white paint on the body.

Started masking at 10am and finished at 3pm. ( A complete headache of a job!)

Painted the French Blue on the body.

5pm Removed the masking.

Well, Im quite happy with the way its turned out so far.Its my first time spraying and masking so I cant complain.A few edges need to be sorted with wet flatting tomorrow and all over clear coat tomorrow evening.

Cheers,

Steve.

Thats a pretty good job at spraying and masking mate if it is your first attempt and its one of the hardest paint scheme's to do very fiddly work.

Imagine the magic you will be making 3rd or 4th attempt .

Looks great ,thanks for sharing Steve

By the way, isn't it time to add 58452 to the main page? People are receiving their Scorchers now and have nowhere to put them...

I second that

Hi,

just returned from the Nuremberg Toy Fair.

I took some detail shots of our long awaited Scorcher Re-Release.

Hope you all enjoy! I certainly did! But I was soo thrilled, I managed to drop my camera on the Scorcher displayed on the column while taking a pic!! :(

I was so shocked I couldn't move. But nobody seemed to notice. I hope I left no dent...

Here's the link to the album: http://img13.imageshack.us/g/img9109h.jpg/

Here are more pics of the Fair (not all Tamiya): http://img690.imageshack.us/g/img9125r.jpg/

... then i took out a picture of a scorcher in a picture frame and replaced the display scorcher and walked out of the Fair ... with a beer belly gut ... :(

Hehe!

One more thing: I overheard a conversation envolving someone from Tamiya Germany.

HE SAID THERE WOULD BE ONLY ONE PRODUCTION RUN!! :( He indicated there are already much more orders than kits available so every dealer might only get a few...

Hope thats only salesman BS.

So where do I get one of these?...preferably USA.

Does it cost like 2,000 dollars?..lol

What's so great about it besides being a old timer brought back to life?.... It isn't that great looking really.

You don't want one, that much is clear. But give it 30-years and you'll understand why others do. :(

Tower Hobbies will have them in a few weeks I imagine? Although please note that I am in UK LOL.

Not 2000 USD, more like 280 USD I think from what I have seen. Or if you are in UK more like 299 GBP which is outrageous IMHO (as usual).

You might want to check the Tamiya model #58016 on this web site, as the Sand Scorcher from 1979 looks significantly different from the 2010 version IMHO (which looks like a Blitzer Beetle, have a look at the flat-across-the-width versus curved-along-the-width of the original, on the wings / fenders).

Hope you like the new one!

I don't LOL. I only like the original.

Cheers,

ARG

As a side note, this looks to be the most popular release of a Radio Controlled Off Road buggy in recent times that Tamiya has done, I wonder if it kick starts a new (mini?) RC revolution with young people like it did in 1979 to 1988 approx.

Or just my wishful thinking?! :(

Cheers,

Alistair G.
