lol - you both sound so serious! My shocks are just built as Mr Tamiya intended

I have 3 spare new silver cans - apart from Russ' "ear test" any ideas how to choose the best one?

Try them on the track. Tell you what tomorrow night before racing starts run against me and we can test them. I agree with Russ you need speed out of the corners.

My motor wires are soldered so not that practical for me to do that...

Oh that is a problem. Apart from "by ear" or dyno i think your stuck. Or you could bring a soldering iron with you tomorrow?

I could but I didnt leave myself much wire to remove them easily - will show you tomorrow - its all neat as it is so I will leave it for now - thinking about it I could fit them in my other M03 chassis just for testing...

or rewire you motors like mine and ians with gold plugs to make motor swapping / testing easy lol.

Are those 4mm Golds soldered or crimped? I hate soldering!

They are soldered as it gives a better join. soldering makes it stronger and less resistance electrically. I could solder them for you if you want. I did it for a living for about 5 years and sometimes still do when production dept are short staffed.

Yeah have read it grip rolls less. From what i have looked at it's the same layout as the M01 (low CofG) and has the exact same gears in the gear box as the M03 (been comparing part numbers). So in theory the gear ratio in the M05 is the same as the M03 (3.134:1)

Not to worried about beating Ian as if i hadn't of grip rolled i would of beat him, so thats just a tyre issue i got to sort(if they ever arrive).

I can't work out how some of the guys racing at Weeting are so fast with a car built the same as mine.

Have you looked into these? http://www.abchobbyusa.com/nracingslicktire.aspx everyone over here swears by them.

Thanks for the advice on the screws too btw.

After a very poor start in the heats (no grip from tyres, until i changed them back to old ones) I managed to start 1st in B Final. Won that race and was bumped to 5th in A Final which i finished in 3rd.

Mini will get a full strip, clean and light greasing this week. As the club now has "hand out" transponders to i need to make a transponder holder or might just buy one off Ebay.

Well done Russ who finished 3rd in C Final. Your improving mate, not long before you give me a run for my money.

I don't think I'm much of a threat just yet Simon  .

I too was struggling for grip. The borrowed tyres which worked so well for me last week just weren't biting like they did previously for some reason.

I was managing to string some consistent laps together though, but still too many crashes.

I'm getting some tyres within the next two weeks but not sure if they will be any good. They are the ones Ian uses, but the best for me so far have been the M Grips.

Just given the mini a full strip down and light greasing with PTFE spray in the gear box. When my new motor eventually turns up i will spin her up and see how she sounds.

At last the new ansmann wheel & tyre sets have arrived.

Were they rubbish?

no grip from tires, until I changed them back to old ones

Yup pretty much as expected LOL. Ansmanns are a complete waste of money and to mount them onto the car is a waste of life.

I tried them and had pretty much the same experience as you've described. Basically they have a waxy coating when you take them out of the packaging. You can get round this problem with the help of some wet and dry, but some folk in our Mini class can ruin a set of Assmanns in a night by wearing through the rubber down to the foam inserts on carpet without the help of wet and dry! Add to this the rims crack when you touch anything with them. You can pick the tyre off the rim and mount them on something that won't crack but I’ll refer you back to my comments about wasting life...

As you can tell I'm not a fan. LOL

Racing tonight ... Plan is to destroy my Fiat 500 for replacement with the HPI Alfa Mito body!

Yummy but annoyingly short wheel base.

Didn't use the ansmanns in the end, the rubbish tyres were standard kit tyres. I think i am going to stick with the M Grips as they held the track brilliantly. Shame about the price and me having no money.

My mate use's monte carlo tyres and standard rims. these are a tight fit with inserts so you dont have to glue them. Might have to give them a try.

Where do you race V1nce?

Worcester Model Car Club. Our rules seem massively more open then those you guys are running to. For example we can run any tyre, so selection is slightly more tricky!

Posted

our rules are:

Any treaded tyre (No slicks/No foams)

Car must be box stock build (No hop-ups)

Silver Can 540 only

Where can you get that shell from? Not seen it for sale anywhere

Posted

*Ironic* How do you waste ££££ just to be no faster then the other guys with them rules ? LOL *Ironic*

WMCC rules...

Car : Any Tamiya M-Chassis.

Bodyshell : Any Commercially available M Chassis Specific Bodyshell.

Motor : Standard Silver Can, Sport Tuned, 17.5 Brushless or Ezrun 3000kv.

Tyres : Any Commercially available M Chassis Specific tyre.(Non-smelling additive allowed)

Batteries: NiCad, Ni-MH or Li-Po Allowed

Weight Limit: 1250 Grams

The Mito isnt a shell at the moment its a new HPI switch. I'd expect the shell to be avalible in the next few weeks because thats all the Switch is good for.

I've got a brand new set of M grips already mounted, I better get them scrubbed in for next week though.

I'm also interested to see how Skip gets on with the Xpress tyres, hopefully he'll be feeling better by next week.

I'm impressed with how well my Mini is holding up, the only chassis damage so far is one of the steering adjusters getting badly scraped on the end of the motor can, presumably where I keep belting the scenery, the shell is, however, developing an, ahem, interesting paint job where it's flaking now :) .

Posted

my chassis is fine, just stripped and cleaned. It now screams around. Shell is getting battered, the front bumper is almost gone.

Posted

I've only ever cracked the rear upper suspension mount on the M03. Basically thats what I got for not running a rear bumper. That chassis became my M05.

The M05 keeps popping the ball joint off the steering arm, which ruined my run in the B final last Friday. Well not quite ruining because it was fun. I still finish 4th out of 7 after been a lap down on half the field after it fell apart. Hopefully using M03 long ball studs will fix this problem, either this or I could steer more and stop running wide into barriers coming out of corners.

I was pushing myself and car a little to hard last night and ended up finishing 6th for nearly all the races. My driving was all over the place! two week break now so hopefully i will settle myself down.

I struggled with grip - too little from my "too new" Xpress XPA118s and then too much understeer from my part worn S-grips but at least the car was controllable - good evening all round otherwise :)
