Well... After having so much fun building the Wild One I bought my next car... A complete Fox was on ebay with only one photo and very little description. I managed to win it for for $120 delivered and was quite chuffed with my purchase.... until it arrived. A massive box arrived at my doorstep containing what looked like the contents from the bin of a hobby shop. I won't start on the Fox yet... that is for another build thread once I manage to get some parts like a new chassis

One good thing was the lady left a note in the box saying she had cleaned out her son's shed and I now have everything RC related in this box. 90% went in my bin and I managed to salvage this:

I was just going to leave it at that and maybe raid it for other build parts but after a trip to my local hobby shop I noticed a box with hornet written on it so of course I asked what was in there...

After exchanging a $10 note I now have to rebuild a Super Hornet because I have parts. Well that's my excuse!!

Here we go again....

at least you've got the battery cover!! that's the 1st bit to go missing

Not so fast will... if you look closely at the second photo one tab has broken off :)

No big deal though as the mounts are missing too so I've got a complete C parts on order. Speaking of broken... have a look at this chassis for TRASHED

Hope that you get it running, it looks like you have some work ahead of you.

The Super Hornet is not my favourite model but I would like to see photos of the Fox as it was the first model that I had as a kid.

Good luck with it it will be good to see it running around one day.

Well, at least it looks like a decent home-made repair - unlike some that seem to involve lots of glue and the unability to get things lined up correctly B)

The home made repair is really bad - the rear mount moves about 20mm. It's in the bin now.

I will start a new thread for the Fox with pictures soon once this one is finished. I only ever do one rebuild at a time otherwise I would never finish any!!

Totally stripped ready for rebuild. Waiting on some shocks to arrive and I'll make a start.

This is all I could salvage that is useable :D

Wow! you have alot of work ahead of you with that "shed" or whatever you brits call it :)

I'm an Aussie thank you... and we call it a shed too :D The really special stuff goes "straight to the Pool Room"

Actually there isn't alot to these - compared to like a Hotshot.

Cleaned and put useable parts on the new chassis. Also cleaned, re-greased and ball raced the gearbox and put in the new housing.

Getting more parts this week hopefully so this shouldn't be a long build.

Thanks for the link Anthony. I check your store all the time for parts I need. No Super Hornet C parts though

Mate,

Is it just some parts from the C Parts you need, or all of them? I do have a swag of new Super Hornet Interchangeable-Type parts not doing a lot....

Alex

Hi Alex

Thanks for the offer! I will PM you in the next week or so with parts I need and see if you can help.

All the parts I ordered arrived yesterday. I also bought another S/H roller :P Got most of the C parts now - the axle shaft mounts that screw to the chassis was what I was chasing.

Better get to work on it....

Finally time to update this one...

Roller completed and body cleaned up. Came up heaps better than expected once I removed all the "optional" decals that were on it.

Just finishing off the driver painting and she's ready to put in the ESC and Sports tuned.

I really wanted one of these when I was a kid, I like the decals and body still. It's looking good, can't wait to see it done!

And finished! :o

Short and sweet build.

Have since taken it for a run and it drives quite well at low and medium speeds on the track. Get the revs up on the black can and the back bounces round like a cane toad with a dislocated hip.

Guessing I have to add a little weight on the back or something? Is it worth experimenting with springs/oil?

Runs good on the grass or soft stuff. Overall happy with the car as a cheap runner. Try and get some action shots in the next few weeks.

Got a second car to build (the donor car) which will be a thrasher but think I might start on the Fox next.

Great work there - always nice to see somebody take the time to bring an old, poor car back to life. B)

Also if you need more parts, be sure to check those Aussie stores. There are still quite a few hobby shops around that stock parts for this car, due to it's unusually long production run and the fact it was still being imported and sold here for a couple of years after it was discontinued worldwide. A few months ago I actually got another NIB Super Hornet from a hobby store in Melbourne.

I guess there's also the fact that there's still a new buggy now (I think) that uses the same chassis etc...(that new blue one).

cheers,

H.

Nice job,

A super hornet was my first tamiya. Bought it off a mate second hand for £20 i think. Was great for racing around my folks garden but then it all fell apart and i had no resource for getting replacement parts so it went in the bin:(

Just bumping this one up as I've finally started the Fox rebuild mentioned at the start of this thread

might wanna keep an eye out for some new rear wheels perhaps... yours are showing the usual "ring" stressmark,

mainly caused by being broadsided by another RC. Eventually rim parts ways with hub rolling off into the sunset

(and your 8yo playmates would cack themselves LOL'ing... way before LOL term was coined)

Not too rare to see SH kits on shelves still... usually $140-160ish for kit, $295 in the Toytraders shrinkwrapped package deal.

Not anymore I think Willy  Was true a couple of years ago, but Super Hornets are all gone in my experience, even here in Australia where the production run was extended. I bought a final NIB last year from a store in VIC, and that was a fluke after a lot of searching.

I have seen NIB Super Hornet prices (kit only) on eBay already nudging AU$250. It's funny, but despite the long production run, it seems they are oddly scarce - most people built and played with them. NIP parts are still widely available though.

cheers,

H.

finally all gone? YAY

SH had the worst kitbox layout imho... was definitely throw-everything-in-loose school of no-blisterpack

yeah Metro down this way has a crateful of spares if anybody needs anything.

Posted

Definitely stuff all thrown in (falling off the conveyor belt :)) but still had a blister pack - one of the last kits to have one I think

So still better IMHO than modern kits with tiny boxes, parts under shell, and generic manuals for chassis and a leaflet for the body. SH was still a little throwback to vintage by comparison :(

I just picked on up off fleabay for $25 and it looks complete. I'm looking forward to cleaning it up and using as a runner. I really like my GH II, so I think the SH will please as well.

Rear wheels/tires might be a problem though.... I found a good source for front wheels/tires, but may just opt for adaptors and modern rears if I can't find any good sources.
