M03 And The Abc Hobby Sunny Coupe Shell

Recommended Posts

I have finished my rwd converison and now I am looking for an appropriate shell for my M03 chassis.

I want to get the ABC Hobby Sunny Coupe, but have seen people say it's nose slopes to much for the front shock mounts.

Has anyone used this shell on the M03 before?

Not seen one myself but did you switch the chassis round to make it RWD - this puts the higher shock tower parts at the rear

According to ABC's website the Sunny coupé won't fit the M03:

Then again, it does seem a bit daft to put a rwd shell onto a fwd chassis.

I'd either look for a short rwd chassis for it, or go with Skip's suggestion & turn it round.

Guys, if you read his post, he converted his M03 to RWD already.

The Sunny body will fit.. the now lower front tower will suit it.

Everything (ok, ALMOST everything) can be made to fit :D Many people have trimmed and shimmed the suspension arms to change the wheelbase - together with removing the high point where the servo normally goes (which probably is the problem ABC Hobby refers to) you should be able to fit practically any M-chassis shell on the M03 :)

Can you post pictures of the M-03? Just curious to see what you did to get it all to work.

I have done it and it drives just like an M04 - so not great

I love it!!! It doesn't look anything like what I though you were trying to do.

Personally I love my M-04M and hate my M-03L. Have been thinking about ways to hack up the M-03 and make it 4 wheel steering with a 2-stick 4-channel radio or some creative channel mixing. Have to look over your work and start collecting the parts (although the last thing I need is another project.)

You linked to an article that totally contradicts your own experience. ;)

Out onto the track, a little tentative at first with the first lap at half pace, but already it felt good. 2nd lap and into it. I expected a little understeer with the setup, and I got it. Lots of it, but the car was stable and felt easy to drive. I recall watching the other guys with their M04's and seeing them spin out in every 2nd corner, but the converted M03 was hooked up. Nail the throttle out of the corner and it would just launch. Hmm I half expected this thing to be rubbish, but I think I underestimated it....

A few more laps and I was getting the hang of it. It required (as you'd expect) a completely different driving style, but it was astonishingly easy to drive with none of the problem that we'd had initially with the M04's. I handed the transmitter over to Tony P who was anxious to have a go himself. He reported the same characteristics as me and was also surprised how easy the car was to drive. Honestly you'd think a RWD car with such a short wheelbase would be a real handful, but it wasn't.

Tim had a turn next and the look on his face confirmed what I'd been thinking, this wasn't a bad car at all! Much to our surprise. As we all got more used to the handling we worked out how to circulate quickly. Up to the corner, back off and turn in with the power off. With no power the thing turned like a demon and was easily the match of a FWD M03. When it's pointing (vaguely) in the right direction, just nail it and off it goes.

To be honest, a little bit of setup work and fine tuning could have this thing really competitive. Its not 'chuckable' like the FWD M03, but it will reward the smoother driver and its just a whole lot of fun. We think that probably the major factor is the tyres. The super-soft Pits really did the job, and we balanced that with some pretty hard fronts.

I built this car just for fun, but to be honest, it's turned out to be a whole lot more than that.....

Here is the link to my chassis. My Chassis Showroom Pics

I didn't like how low the rear sat so I used a piece aluminum to raise the rear end up approximately 1cm.

I still need to work out mount for the steering servo. RC-mini.net has some pics that show the chassis cut out.

I am thinking about first trying some lengthened ball joints.

Finally got my Datsun Sunny Coupe shell, after nearly a month in shipping.

I got it mounted.

Went to the my LHS today for some paint, and I found out they have dropped the Mini Racing class.

Maybe I can appeal to the "Track Masters" and get my Datsun into Vintage Trans Am.

The Sunny did compete, so did the Mini - but it was in a 2.0L and under class.

Nearly complete - but no where to race.
