Simple question. Could someone please post a review of the Dyna Storm. I have never been able to find one. Even back in the day when the dyna first came out. Thank you!!

This Link refers to the the thread about a tuning project to make the Dyna Storm a more competitive car, maybe even up to today's spec :P It isn't a review but provides good information about the car.

I've driven mine only a few times before retiring it to the shelf (it still is unscratched!), and I am vurrently working on a Dyna Storm to get it running (which will have some hopup parts and a very quick motor  ). Although I haven't got a lot of driving experience with the Dyna, I can tell a few things about it.

First up the build. When I started building my Dyna (yes, it used to be NIB ), one thing surprised me right away: how all parts fitted together so nicely. No (or close to no) play, things don't need modification or any fux for alignment, it's a very easy and satisfying build, despite the high amount of parts. Make sure you assemble the diff and slipper clutch right, they pretty complicated parts and it's quite costly if you need to replace parts on it, which brings me to the second point.

The parts availability. Not all (original parts) for the Dyna Storm are on ebay all the time (like with say a TA02 chassis), but parts do regularly turn up. However, the price can be pretty high for some parts. So high actually, that the tuning parts from Nimrod are at very reasonable prices, especially considering the quality that the Nimrod parts have. Other parts can also be replaced for parts that are still in production today (For example the unversal shafts can be replaced for TRF501 rear universal shafts, or replacing the original dampers for TRF501/511 (rear) dampers), which are often cheaper because they are more widely available.

Third point of course is the driving. When driving mine, I was using a 12T brushless (23T brushed equivelant) motor, so a little slower than the original motor. I drove on soft sand, where the kit supplied tires were meant for, and I was very impressed. It's very balanced, there is no big understeer, the oversteer was controllable and it ran very smoothly. I did set up the slipper clutch very tight because I wanted to avoid it from slipping too much. It's a bit of getting used to, hearing the slipper making that high grinding, screaming-like noise for a split second when you drive off with full throttle. I am no racer and I've never driven such a nice and balanced vehicle, and I have never driven on a track, so I can't give you a lot of information on setting up the car for track use. I did hear that the Dyna Storm as stock was too flexible too make an accurate car setup.

Fourth and last point is the reliability. I can't say much about this because I haven't broken any parts, but I have heard that in particular the front and rear suspension blocks can have issues. I would also maintain the gearbox regularly, since it is a high performance, competition aimed car :)

PS: I would recommend you buy one if you don't have one yet!

There was a review of the Dyna Storm in Model Cars , April 1993 . Here it is, I scanned it a while back. Enjoy! ;-

Nice to see a review of it, but there's not an extreme lot of information on it's actual performance. I think it may be hard though to find a real good and relevant review about it's handling.

This review about the Super Astute tells something about the issues that it had, and what had to be improved on the Dyna Storm - and apparently either was either not improved all the way, or it was too late to save Tamiya's name in the 2WD competition buggy scene.

This review about Jamie Booth's conversion on the regular Astute, a year earlier, shows how the original Astute can be changed to the Works spec, and probably to handle better, too.

Both also not reviews which give a full idea of the car's handling, let alone the Dyna Storm's, but these do help to give an idea about the development Tamiya and Jamie Booth were making with their 2WD competition buggy project.
