Not if you actually raced... :)

I would say the real crime is the Hybrid Spiked rear tires stretched to fit over a 2.2" rim (though they do appear to have at least been run that way)...

It's not really a crime considering there were no undercowls for the Dyna back then as far as I know - Plus protecting it is pretty useless in racing circumstances I think? But nowadays, if you'd have an original carbon plate I'd be a little more careful with it... :)

WOW beautiful, thanks for sharing. Well here is an update. Im going to order the fibrelyte graphite, the nimrod undertray and bulkhead. Ive already ordered 5 extra sets of FR and RR arms and a spare body. But anyway here is what I did tonight:

Parts organized for assembly

001rbv.jpg

Diff and slipper half way assembled

Thanks for the offer!!!!!!!!!! I will take those arms, pm me and we will work something out. Well I did a bit of work tonight. What a fun build, in the right hands this car could still do well if you ask me. Three gear trans, check!!!! Super smooth ball dif, check!!!! Efficient and well thought out suspension check!!

Going to run stock chassis until Fibrelye shows up, hopefully the under-tray arrives in time. All most done!!!!!!!!!!!!

With out further delay:

Parts and screws organized on instructions:

001dps.jpg

Chassis with RR shock tower attached

003id.jpg

With the gorgeous blue shocks attached

004nw.jpg

Front and rear shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With its older brother in view, probably jealous 'casue the good old Astutes running days are over :D

005wms.jpg

006c.jpg

With my Astutes old shoes!!!!!!! They will be exercised again!!!!!!!!!

007z.jpg

I love showing off the old rides. The beginning, middle and end of Tamiyas FRP offroad experiment.

008cw.jpg

And a peek of what will be coming off retirement via brushless too, minus the impossible to find EVO body.

Are you referring to the Top Force Evolution body? If so, I checked the manuals for the TF and TF Evo and the body had the same part number in each so thus the bodies should be identical?!

I think he's mainly referring to the decals which are on the Evo body (and in this case also his Evo body) B)

Great photos on this thread B):)

A number of contributors to this thread have asked me for DB wide universals, since I could not find sets anywhere either myself I have decided to sell mine - as I rather they are enjoyed and used than sitting unused with my rc gear at this time.

See the ebay forum thread for a link to the sale.

Looking forward to seeing the photos of the completed DS here!

My mate just sold a complete Carbon Fiber set for the D/S from tamiya on e bay. It went for a song to i think $80 Au.

That is F&R shock towers. Upper deck and main chassis all in carbon fiber.

I was lucky enough to get his last main chassis and upper deck in a trade as he knew i just bought a new Re D/S. I have got the upper carbon on but will try the standard chassis first.

My first test day is on sat at our vintage meet.

Those shocks are just the smoothest i ever felt.

Cant wait as it looks so good. We now have 5 D/S owners at our meets.

There was never an official TRF211X shell and the car itself was never available for sale.

Bodies used were the obvious ones, Madcap, Astute and Dynastorm, depending on the drivers preference and what was available at the time.

Well I don't agree on this, there was a shell that was as "official" as it could be without having released the 211X as an official kit. That shell is pictured on the documentation that was sent out with each numbered car, and as somebody already pointed out it's quite similair to the Dyna shell, although less detailed and not as rounded. I have a couple of pictures somewhere which shows the "manual" or whatever those sheets of papers should be called. Also, all the TRF211Xs I saw in person on the tracks during the latter part of 1992 (4 or 5 ones for Finland+Sweden) were sporting this shell.

I think the confusion comes from the fact that some teams, notably the british one, started running the car in prototype form before it was dubbed the 211X and sent out to team drivers around the world. I've seen some examples with Astute shells early 1992.

Well this thread has been an inspiration to me, thanks GTodd and everyone else!

I grabbed a NIB re-re a month or so ago (it's at my sisters place in another land at the moment, I'll get it before xmas) and am reading up anticipating my long awaited build. I fortunately have also spotted and purchased one each of 4025036, 37 and 38, the Tamiya carbon components NIP. A previous poster in this thread mentions carbon towers I wasn't aware of and I've had a look and cant find a part number (or a space in the part codes that they would fit) so perhaps those ones were not oem?

Since I see every DS expert is on this thread  were there any other Hop-Ups for the DS? This one's for the shelf. I can't seem to find any and can't find a legible version of the last page of the manual.

Only hop-ups I'm aware of are the 3 carbon bits you already have. These were only listed in the back of the original Dyna Storm manual (not re-release). There were never carbon towers as far as I know.

BTW: Where did you find a carbon main chassis plate? I've only seen this part on two separate occasions (and one was on the runner car shown on the page 2 of this thread).

The only Carbon plate parts that Tamiya ever put in production (as for prototype parts I can't tell you) for the Dyna Storm are the Bottom plate, the front upper plate and the rear upper plate. The gearbox (side) plate, shock towers and battery plate were never produced in Carbon by Tamiya, but are produced by Fibre-Lyte.

As for hopups for the Dyna Storm besides the carbon plates, there weren't really a lot from what I know:

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/pictureframe.asp...200383802_2.jpg

The boxart shows a few parts on the side of the box, but Note that it says "Optional Parts," not "Hop-Up Parts" or "Tuning Parts" or anything. They were apparently not considered superior over the standard parts, and with reason:

- The Hi-Cap dampers, which don't have rebound because there was a hole in the top cap to even the pressure between the outside world and the bladder. It was considered a better damper at the time by Tamiya I guess, but they aren't actually a whole lot smoother, and the lack of rebound apparently isn't far superior either I think, as most oil dampers have a sealed cavity above the bladder. The Hi-Cap Setting Spring Sets could be considered kind of a hopup for the Dyna Storm though, as it would increase the adjustability of the car. Then again, many brands sold springs...

- Sealed bearings could be bought instead of the metal shielded ones (although competition drivers may well prefer metal shielded ones as they have less friction - at least, that's what I've been told).

- The Pin Spike tire and Lightweight front wheel (Wild One wheel and Super Hornet front tire?), I guess that many racers would've skipped these if they were looking for better tires.

- Square Spike Rear Tires (Same as Super Astute) - I never tried them, but unless the compound is softer, I don't see a huge advantage is square spikes instead of round ones.

And so on...

One potential hopup for the Dyna Storm could be the plastic (it could be Nylon?) clutch housing of the TRF211X. It's lighter, therefor the rotational mass is reduced and the car would end up going faster around the track. The 2 main reasons why Tamiya probably didn't make the clutch housing from plastic is that it warps more than metal, making the mesh of the spur gear less consistent, and perhaps the tension on the slipper clutch too. Not to mention that the small screws with metal thread just aren't suitable for using plastics that are not reinforced (something Tamiya didn't do with the TRF211X clutch housing, I'm sure of that).

@94eg!: I recall seeing that sale of CTY300 on ebay too :) I for a long time felt stupid that I didn't buy the car from him, but in the end it was better that I didn't: This summer I got hold of 2 carbon bottom plates from TC member BORMAC.

As for the seller of which djmcnz bought his carbon plates, I guess it's me... :P I sold them tonight, it would be a strange coincidence if there would be 2 sales of such a rare part on one night

PS: Let's not forget that Nimrod Racing did make some awesome tuning parts/aftermarket hopups for the Dyna Storm! Only for a short while though :( Luckily I'm trying at getting the rear suspension blocks back in production!

Yes, that would be a coincidence, especially with the same username! :)

@94eg, yes I got them from Origineelreclamebord and it was one of my simplest TC trades. They were listed here in the trade section and I was just browsing, the trade was listed a few months ago so it was a long shot but shortly after my inquiry I got a reply and did the deal... didn't take a lot of thinking on my part... I was of course surprised they hadn't already sold!

One of my biggest "gripes" about the DS was the lack of carbon, next to my TFE and Egress it just wouldn't look right (even if only a trained eye could tell). Now I can gaze upon something I "feel" is complete... :)

Seems like I don't need to really get anything else.

I shall print this post and slip a copy into the front page of my manual!
