Just wondering if the Knight hauler was based on a particular truck or weather it is just a generic american big rig. I'm going to buy one in january as a birthday present to myself!. I will buy a mfu as well. Are there different mfu's for different trucks or is it one that fits all?

AFAIK the Knight Hauler isn't based on any particular truck, I think it's just a modernised version of the King Hauler

As for MFU, Tamiya make two, the MFC 01 and MFC 02 the one for trucks/lorries is the MFC 01

There are also companies around who make sound/light units for trucks

Servonaut make them and they sound very nice, but they cost way more than Tamiyas MFC

Another is the USM RC by Beier electronics, not sure about this one as it's fairly new, but reports sound promiising

best thing is it's a lot cheaper than Tamiyas MFC, but you would also need an esc with it

I'd also been wondering this since I got mine. I'd been googling Mack trucks and Western Star for a while trying to find a similar truck with Mack having one with a pretty close sleeper, but cab's were never the same, and Newer Mack trucks now have the 'M' in the grille.

It wasn't until a mate said "You should see Neils Freightliner" that got me searching that brand truck...

And I think I've found the answer: Freightliner Coronado

and:

Tamiya would have changed the headlights and other minor bit's to get their 3% copyright difference so they didn't get a lawsuit.

Anyway, I'm glad my truck has a brand name home, and I'm off to get some Freightliner decals made up. :D

That does look very similar! I also found this peterbilt which looks along the same lines as the Knight hauler.

The closest truck is the freightliner coronado. Tamiya avoided licensing issues by changing the design ever so slightly

Yes, your right :)

The headlights on the peterbilt are similar to those used on the Knight but its definitely based on the Freightliner isn't it. It's a very smart truck. I'm looking forward to getting the truck now.

I would go as far as to say it isn't 'based', as there's far too many similarities, it's definitely the Freightliner, being about 90-95% of the Knight Hauler is exactly as the Coronado is. Look at the King Hauler and the Globeliner.

I would be interested to know how Tamiya go about getting the license to make certain brand models/RC's,

You think that they would ask first, then build the mould. I'd imagine with the clod buster that they just built the mould, put it on the shelves and Chevrolet said 'Hey, you didn't ask if you could do that! And Tamiya just changed the badges and naming. How many other Chevrolet's has Tamiya made since the Blazer and Clod? I understand making mould's is a timely and costly process, but at the risk of alienating a business relationship with the same manufacturer in the future? Keep making 3% changes to your models from that brand forever? I feel Tamiya would be heading down the Chinese trodden road of replica's if they kept doing this. Shame really, the nicest Tamiya models are the one's that are built exactly on their 1:1 counterparts.

In saying that, (and a contradiction) I actually prefer the Tamiya headlights on the Knight to be honest anyway haha :)

No, this is not the Sand Scorcher 2009 thread :)

You should. Infact I would have been happy with any of the 1/14 tractors myself, the Knight is definitely a pleasure to build, operate, and look at :)
