Hi everybody. Won myself a Nissan King Cab on the bay yesterday & have been quoted what I thought, an unreasonable amount for the postage. The car is in Canada, I'm in Australia & have been told it will be $115(I'm assuming $US) to get it over here. My question is, in your experience is postage expensive to have things sent from Canada? As I was the only bidder & got it at a reasonable if not cheap price I'm wondering if the seller is trying to make up for some losses on the low sale price? Thanks for your help & Merry Christmas to all!!

I cant say if your right or wrong about making up the cost although it does seem a little steep but i have in the past found a member near to the seller on ebay had it either shipped to or collected by them and then forwarded on to myself by them saved myself a considerable amout of money and i inturn have done it for others !

just an idea (even better if you have family around the world !)

Well after having a play on Canada Posts website I found to ship a 2.5kg parcel which measures 18inches x 10inches x 10 inches

to Australia is C$202.79 which is roughly US$191

Obviously the price would be less for a smaller, lighter package

It's the same here in the UK though our overseas postage rates are pretty horrendous too

Last thing I posted abroad was an XC Pajero, I sent it to Madrid in Spain and it cost £37.50 fully trackable and insured

Thanks for the replies & ideas fellas. The guy is also offering it for $80 with a 4-5 week wait & insurance of only $100(too long to wait). I think he has got his price off the Canada Post web site & to be fair is offering to reimburse me the savings once I have it & I'm happy but I don't like this way of doing things as it's a bit risky. It just seems too much compared to all the other cars I have bought from around the world although only one from memory from Canada. P.S. Sorry about the heading being spelt wrong, tried to change it but couldn't work out how to do this.

Here in the UK we have services like InterParcel who buy excess capacity from big couriers such as DHL and FedEx and then sell it on. I recently sent some Speedway stuff to Oz and the quote on the DHL site was around £60. Via InterParcel it was £35. Also on eBay UK you can buy services like this, but don't know if the same thing is done in the states.

The idea of getting another TC member to ship it at cost is definately worth considering if you can find someone

Good luck, hope it's worth the trouble :(

Canada is usually more expensive. But if you want to save money you can certainly use Ground Shipping from Canadapost. But don't expect getting their after 2-3month. I sent a package using that to Hong Kong and it sure took its time, but it was a very reasonable shipping cost.

i'm in the us and i can verify that canadian post is very expensive. i get better pricing shipping crates of absinthe from spain then i do getting a box shipped from canada.

i stopped doing business with canadians because of the shipping rates.

Something interesting you may want to try ...

I recently dealt with someone in South Korea, he had me send the package to a place in the US, which then re-routed via Fedex/UPS or faster service. He said he saved a bit and the time it got there was really quick. So maybe there is such service to Australia as well

Thanks again everyone. It looks as though Canada's post is just expensive. I will think twice before bidding on items from there in the future. Maybe thats why I won it, everybody else knows the post prices. Lucky the winning price of US$179.99 isn't too high(I think?). Cheers.

I hear Santa Claus is going to be up in that area soon, maybe he can deadhead your package on the sleigh? :P

I understand your pain though. Why is it that we can send 114 lbs of junk mail annually to every man, woman and child on the planet for mere pennies, but it costs a spare kidney to ship actual parcels and goods to each other any more???

Anybody at the post office wants to explain to me the logic of giving spammers the cheapest rate possible to deliver unsolicited and unwanted rubbish to people and then cry about how they don't have the time, money or resources to deliver the things we really want and then charging a fortune to do the job they're supposed to be doing [you know, delivering mail...] - well, I'm willing to listen, but don't expect me to buy that load of hooey. I know the sound of horse apples hitting the ground, but I haven't ever seen them drop from the horse's mouth. Should be interesting.

Here endeth the rant.

As a Canadian and occasional Ebay Seller I can vouch for his shipping rates. That would probably be Airmail and a week or two to arrive. The lower shipping rate is by "surface" and can take up to 3 months, a bit risky too.

The high shipping cost is why I will only sell to USA & Canada when listing items such as complete trucks etc (UPS, Fedex etc from Canada are just as high too). This of course results in angry USA customers who think I'm skimming but hey, I don't make the rates ! Good find too .

Ditto on the expensive shipping from Canada. I am in Dubai and a few years ago I won a SRB Roller for US$80 and the air shipping was US$100.....I opted for the ground shipping....cost me US$50 and took 6 weeks to get to me.

Come on, its not that bad. I have paid similar kings ransoms demands and had my ebay dream item delivered by parachuting bikini babes from a high speed business jet, gps guided to my front door with realtime global tracking. Its worth it for the post delivery pool party alone!!! And with the aussie dollar powering and your stimulus bonus!!! Where is your sense of aussieness!!!

that reminds me that berman sent me a package fron nz to the us, i think it was 8 bucks shipping. lol thats half way around the world.

It's a done deal now, have just paid for it. Probably not a bad deal with the cheap buy price Will avoid Canadian ebay purchases from now on I think!! I look forward to the bikini babes dropping it off though! Wouldn't care what I paid if that was the case.

They are probably Lumberjacks though...

He's a lumberjack and he's O.K.

Canada has the largest land mass of any country in the world. To fly coast to coast will take at least 5 hrs vs in Europe in 5 hours you have crossed several countries. With pop. of 30million you bet everything is more expensive before you add on the taxes. The good part about Canada is a beautiful country and the CFL haha....

Just to be really pedantic  , Russia is 1st, Canada is 2nd. Just found this ---> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_count...s_by_total_area

A good fact that might come in handy in any pub quiz.

Hi mate I live in Aussie as well and buy many items from the US/Canada/UK/HK/Europe postage does vary greatly depending on what the item is how big it is how the seller packs it, items go on volume and weight its a catch 22 if the post office dosent get you on volume they get you on wieght.

Having said that I have just purchased a NIB Monster Beetle from the US and I was charged US$45.00 for postage to Australia I knew it would cost more to send but that is what the guy charged so who am I to argue anyway the seller took his time to post it I contacted him and said it was my christmas present and I would really appreciate it in time for christmas so he sent it priority mail from the states it cost him US$84.00 and that was for a NIB MB very well packed in a big USPS box with bubble wrap and packing beads (Which all cost extra as well).

I always ask a seller prior to bidding what does postage cost to Australia if not stated in the auction that way I have something in writing .

Sometimes the seller will try and make some money on the auction by charging extra postage so its best to get a quote prior to making a purchase.

Have a great christmas

Regards Stuart

Hope everyone had a great Chrissy!! I should have asked about shipping costs before I bid but took the gamble I suppose, my fault for not checking. Most of the time I rely on people doing the right thing & this guy more than likely is but I was a bit shocked at the cost. You never know I may get a reimbursement. Thanks to everyone for your replies.
