Where did you get the tranny and the motor? did you replace the speed cntrl as well? If I replaced the motor and speed cntrl what can I do to beef the tranny up but not go as far as you went?

I have talked to some who said I should not mod it at all because it is a collector??????? I would like to beef it up perf wise but should I sell it while it is stock and in good running cond???

The tranny is the A&L Lethal Weapon 2 belt tranny. You can find it on the net with a search.

The motor is a Tamiya MabuchiStock Dyna Run.

The ESC is a 12T compatible.

You can't beef up the original tranny without massive mods.

The car is collectible but you can do everything you want. And you can sell the car as you want, modified or not. The buyer will decide if buy it or not.

You must decide if you wanna run or sell it.

I need to get mine running as well. What's the easiest way to sort out the diff? Mine is knackered. Is there a gear diff I can replace it with?

The other option apart from the A&L is to use the Super Astute Tamiya Traction Control (TTC) gear train (#53087) which is a ball differential.

Cost is about 65GPB though. I'm happy with mine B) Thinking of upgrading from the dyna tech 01R though.

Well I installed the titan 12 t motor and it is a little faster, my ancient ESC is okay but I can get his traxxas xl 5 ESC I just need a new crystal, where and what freq would I need ????

Is this possible??

Also I need tires, what do I need to get wheels as well. I measured them but can't find anything to match up.

What other type of bodies would fit on this truck???

Thanks

That is what I thought, Well it has been running okay so far but it may not be getting all the power because of my old ESC.

For tyres the 2.2 proline range is your best option depending what surface your going to be running on. I'm running Dirt Paw's which are a knobbly tyre and will wear super quick if you use them on asphalt/concrete, but are great on soft dirt. Most people will recommend the Dirt Hawg as a good all round tyre.

12t will kill your diff. It's not the gears that are the problem, it's the poor design of the differential, it will start to slip quite bad, and even if you tighten the diff centre more with the factory spacers (SE7) it just ends up slipping again eventually.

Well I can hear it slipping so i'm just feeding the throttle at first also got the esc that was with the 12t motor, works really well, alot quicker and am running more batt pwr as well.

Yeah I can imagine a 12t would be fun in a king cab, the trucks are pretty stable factory I'd imagine it would love it. :)

I only have an Dynatech 01R in mine.

I need to get a body that will stand up to a few bumps and bruises, now that it is faster I am hitting things by accident but hitting them harder and am going to destroy this 20 yr old body, what size or make would I look for in a new body???

Nice! Yeah looks like you are up for some tyres, the factory ones dont last long and a scarcely available now.

If you like the king cab shell search for Teambluegroove's ones on ebay (search 'tamiya king cab body'), i believe they are made from 040 thickness polycarbonate whereas the factory ones are very thin and fragile and bend and rip easily.

Also as an alternative you could buy the Hilux Monster Racer body that comes on the same chassis, Teambluegroove make a replica one of those too. :P

Have a look in my showroom if you wish to view mine (link in sig).

We could really do with a company that does reproduction Tamiya and Kyosho tyres that are long since out of production, that would be just so cool. I'd donate a couple of NIP Jet Hopper tyres to make a plentiful supply of those too.

I wonder how difficult it is to repro. tyres? No one seems to have done this in the RC circle before? Except that guy who did those Menkhoff tyres for the Tamiya 1/14 trucks...

You could try asking that guy on ebay that makes the soft repro bruiser tyres? I think repro tyres is a good idea, (the kyosho guys would love some sand supers for their javelins) :D

Did you mean the Ebay user called " nowingu " ?

Or did you mean they were made by Ebay user " team-r.n.r " ? I need to know who actually makes these, not just sells them, and the trouble is that there are two Ebay users selling them...

Thanks,

We actually looked onto this in january 2009 and spent approx 3 months looking at the pro's and con's of doing it.

We contacted several rubber manufacturing companies to discuss types and also several larger rubber moulding companies, unfortunatley the cost (In europe at least) is prohibitive and deemand would have to be extremely high to meet costs let alone exceed them.

I looked into the Avante Pin Spike Wide tyres (Avante/supershot rear tyres), Hybrid Spike rear tyres (egress/astute) and also the original Optima (OT30) and optima mid (OT66) tyres.

The costs were going to be approx £2000-2500 per tool (1 tool needed for each tyre) and then units could be produced at approx £3-4pr, approx selling price of £15-20pr? meaning worst case you would have to shift 166+prs of each tyre just to cover the costs alone, best case would be 100prs of each before you start making money.

Unfortunatley due to the way they fit to the wheels they would have to be done in 2 parts (just like the originals were) this increased the costs.

So unless anyone out there has a spare £8-10k and gets an order together large enough to cover that cost plus production costs, its not going to happen lol.

Thats a heads up on what the costs are chaps!, so if one of you richer guys wishes to spend some money its unlikely to happen at this time for Tamiya certainly, unfortunatley due to their constant re-releases its not worth at all pursuing the tamiya ones as we would need to get permission from Tamiya, maybe when we have some spare capital we will look at the Kyosho nes (which are guaranteed not be re-re'd unless Kyosho invests hundreds of thousands making up new tooling for every part they made!), although we do have permission from kyosho to produce repros's we would need to check with bridgstone for the license of the name and Sand Super copyright.

Hope that all made sense.

There is a german company selling repro W5031 tyres but i hear they had to remove the sand super and bridgestone logos and the rubber smells quite a bit im told, otherwise they look OK.

The OT-66 and OT-30 could be reproduced easily and without problems if the Sand Super and Bridgestone logos werre removed but that is the main reason i think why people want them?, maybe im wrong?.

Let me know what you guys think!.

Thanks

Very interesting post.

Hey what's up with the Sand Super ? Why is there a concern over copyright? I thought that Sand Super was a made up name by Kyosho ? Does a 1:1 firm exist of that brand ?

I'll go and Google it LOL.

Also interesting on the costs. Odd though if what you say is true, how come the guys on Ebay can do those repro. Buiser tyres reasonably priced (although as you say labour costs may be small, and I haven't got any of those tyres to take a look at and see how good they are).

Maybe it was made up name by Kyosho?, I just assumed (maybe incorrectly) that it was a company like Tamiya Smoothies or the like?.

The guys on ebay probably own a manufacturing company and do it themselves in their spare time so tooling costs and material costs would be negligible i would assume?.

I placed this post regarding kyosho in the Kyosho Forum, so maybe we can keep track of it there, as I said if interest is great enough we would look to do something, but will need some feedback on this.

OK I Googled and Wiki'd and Sand Super doesn't seem to exist at all.

So if you copy the tyre then you might as well therefore copy the Sand Super logo, that's logical isn't it? Since both are "copyright" in theory? I mean the "intellectual property" of the design of the tyres and the design of the logo?

I don't see how you're going to be able to sell tyres without the logo on them. Mud Star 's are not Mud Stars without the logo, either LOL.

I don't see how Sand Super tyres could sue you seeing as how they don't seem to exist :(

Also the thought occurs... Isn't there a law that says that in the USA, the item becomes PUBLIC DOMAIN after 25 years unless the copyright is renewed? :D

In which case, since Optima came out in 1985, the tyres are effectively copyright 1985.

So they would be able to be repro'd without problems IMHO. Especially as Kyosho have NO interest in rereleasing ANY of their 1980's buggies as far as anyone in the hobby can tell.

Thoughts?!

Cheers,

Alistair G.
