The Toyota Hilux Monster Racer Build Chronicles

Recommended Posts

Howdie-doodie-gator.

I'm posting this thread so everyone can see what goes into building these kits. They are getting fairly rare now, so not everyone here will have the opportunity to build one.

As per the thread title (in case you missed it) we are building the Toyota Hilux Monster racer here, item number 58086.

If you want to follow the build, I would suggest downloading the manual for reference as you view the thread.

Here is the box lid:

Lets do a bit more..

Step 44, the body. Interestingly, the wheel arches are pre-cut, so its just a matter of lopping off the bottom in a fairly straight line.

img14438_28122009053333_5.jpg

Step 44 done. Body cut, ready for washing and masking up:

img14438_28122009053333_6.jpg

Now to start the hard bit.....painting. :(

Looks like this will be difficult to get right for a numpty such as myself, but I'll give it a good go.

Great job.

Thanks for the step by step build.

I wanted one and was bidding on one of e bay about a month ago. I pulled out after $300 A.U. It went a little more. I than purchased a Stadium Thunder for $150 U.S. Its such a good little truck.

Where did your Monster Racer came from???

I see JR/Rc has one in stock now.

Thanks.

Cheers.

Mark.

Mine came from Ebay.....maybe we were bidding on the same one. I think I paid just over 300 bucks AUD for it.

OK, the home stretch now.

Here is the body as painted. Very hard body to do, much easier masking it if you do the black first, then the silver, then the white, and the red last.

img14438_01012010153226_1.jpg

img14438_01012010153226_2.jpg

img14438_01012010153226_3.jpg

img14438_01012010153226_4.jpg

And here it is after stickering. Finished at last!!

img14438_01012010153226_5.jpg

img14438_01012010153226_6.jpg

And that's it!! The Monster racer is done :)

I hope you've enjoyed this thread as much as I enjoyed the build. I love building the vintages, even more so than the new ones. Its just something about ripping into a 20 year old kit that I can't explain. I love it, and I'll be doing more of them.

Cheers!

Hi and thanks for showing us the build, always interesting to see how kits go together. I was also glad for the heads up on the painting of the shell, as i have one NIB waiting for paint sometime!!. Did you spray all the colours or did you use brush on paints for some of the colours?.

Colin.

Hey there mate,

I sprayed all the colours. The areas are quite big, so spraying isn't a problem.

Brilliant thread, there's just something about older kits..

I 2nd that. Is almost like I am there. And thanks for the effort you've put in like laying out all the parts and photographic them and up loading them. Lot of work.

I agree, what a great read! You can tell your enthusiasm in the way you laid everything out (both the hilux build AND the thread).

Cant wait to acquire one to compliment my K/C!

We need a drool emoticon...
