I've been reading about these cars and some people seem to think that the likes of the Mad Rat and Smackers are a possibility as competitive racers. Is this true against the likes of Associated's etc? They seem to be very cheap, but are they any good and would they need a lot of hop ups compared to other competitive cars?

Thanks

I feel I must reply to this as I really do not wish for you to waste your money.

The mad rat in it's cheapest form is complete rubbish! i will most likely open a can of worms with this one but I cannot sit by and see someone waste thier money...........

We had a couple of them turn up at our local off road club, outdoor astro track. The cars proceeded to fall apart while going around the track, leaving pieces of themselves all around the lap. It was so comical !

Until after about 2/3rds of a lap it just stopped..............

This car is totally unsuited to off road racing, buy a Desert Gator/Sand Viper or Durga/Baldre.

I have a std madrat (with bearings the only hop-up), with a 9.5 brushless. I race it at a tight indoor circuit. Raced it on and off over the last few months.and have beaten an X6, cat etc. Mine seems to be fine. Although the Tbar has broken on another guys car (but the new kits have the strengthened part), Its about £4 for Tbar. Another guy broke his front suspension mount, but thats all that I have seen happen to them.

The only thing thats really an issue is the shocks arent up for racing as the caps can pop off. I superglued mine on for now. Its a cracking car and wipes the floor with any Tamiya 2wd buggy. However I would definately get a Durga / Baldre over this car as those are better cars, and I prefer 4wd.
