Just got an Acoms AR221/40 Rx from ebay.

The calculator page says 40Mhz aerials should be about 46cm long. Correct. [?]

The aerial is only 41cm. Is this the right length when new? Will it make a difference. [?]

I also have an AR2/40 Rx with a 53cm aerial. Why the difference (assuming they are original). [?]

Finally, how much difference will they make to performance. [?]

Many thanks all. [:D]

Well, the circuit boards have also some length and in the end what it important is the lenght that hangs out in one straight, despite having provided the formula for the calculator, wouldn't put high significance in such minor differences, the calculator is more a rule of thumb if a Rx doesn't have a cable and you need to make one.

Thanks.

I have heard that the height of the end of the aerial affects the reception- it should be at the top of the aerial tube, not hanging down outside. Is this true?

What about a SRB with the metal whip aerial? If the rx aerial will not reach to the loop at the top, what is the best thing to do? Lengthen the rx aerial? Solder it to the bottom of the whip?
